We present observations of energetic ions from the Ulysses COSPIN Low Energy Telescope in the mid and high-latitude regions of the heliosphere prior to and during the first polar pass of the Ulysses spacecraft. After the encounter with Jupiter, Ulysses started on its journey out-of-the-ecliptic. Between 13°S and 29°S the spacecraft sampled the solar wind from both the streamer belt and the polar coronal hole. Here, co-rotating magnetic structures with forward and reverse shocks and containing accelerated energetic ions were observed. At latitudes greater than 29°S, Ulysses was completely immersed in the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. Here the co-rotating magnetic structures were weaker, and in general had only reverse shocks, but were still capable of accelerating the energetic ions, albeit with reduced intensity. The most recent results show that beyond 50°S, very few if any, reverse shocks are observed. However, accelerated ions from magnetic interaction regions are still observed. We report also on an intensity enhancement at 50°S due to the passage of a high-latitude CME.  相似文献

The concepts of near-pole magnetic field variations during magnetically quiet periods are explored, with special emphasis on the relationships of these variations to interplanetary magnetic field components. Methods are proposed for relating the variations which have been observed to the fields from the various sources, based on a thorough selection of reference levels. We assume that the field variations in the summer polar cap during magnetically quiet periods consist of the following components: (i) the middle-latitude S qvariation extended to the polar region; (ii) the DPC(B y) single-cell current system with a polar electrojet in day-side cusp latitudes; (iii) the DMC(B z) two-cell current system of magnetospheric convection, in the form of a homogeneous current sheet in the polar cap towards the sun, with return currents through lower latitudes; (iv) the DPC(B z) single-cell counterclockwise current system with a focus in the day-side cusp region. Quantitative relations between the near-pole variation intensities and the value and sign of the IMF azimuthal component, with a 1 hr time resolution, have been obtained and used to suggest ways of diagnosing the interplanetary magnetic field on the basis of ground observations.  相似文献

In this paper the developments made in the last five years on numerical simulation/modeling studies of a complex nighttime equatorial spread F phenomenon are reviewed. Emphasis is given to the Indian work and necessary comparisons are done with other international works on this field. Investigations involving the important aspects, namely the confinement of the plasma bubble in the bottomside of the ionosphere, linear and nonlinear effects of molecular ions in the development of plasma bubbles, interaction of two modes as a seed perturbation are discussed in detail. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Flare phenomena in the solar atmosphere and in the terrestrial magnetosphere exhibit many similarities. The mechanical energy of enhanced photospheric motion is converted and stored in the form of magnetic potential energy in sunspot fields, which is analogous to the case of the growth phase of magnetospheric substorms. The energy release during the explosive phase is initiated by a sudden collapse in the magnetic field topology and the X-type magnetic neutral point is created in the corona. Subsequent electrical discharge takes place in the form of an intense electrojet current flowing in the base of the chromosphere at the altitude where the Cowling conductivity is a maximum. It is suggested that the acceleration of particles by field-aligned electric fields and the Ohmic heating in the chromosphere result in major features of solar flares. This article also appears inSolar Physics 40 (1975) 217–226. By way of exception this paper is reproduced here for the sake of completeness.  相似文献

A new auroral pattern, which indicates major auroral characteristics in all local time sectors, is presented. It has emerged as a result of extensive study of DMSP-8531 and -10533 auroral photographs. The paper presents also a brief summary of recent studies on the role of the north-south component of the interplanetary magnetic field on large-scale auroral dynamics and on the relationship between substorm energy and the size of the oval.  相似文献

Recent research into the effects of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) on the Earth's auroral oval and plasmapause are reviewed. While the IMF sector structure has been known for some time to produce asymmetries in polar-cap convection, recent work has shown these effects to extend into the dayside auroral oval. A restricted region of local times referred to as the convection throat is found to move to either side of the noon meridian in response to changes in the IMF B y component. The question of the entry of solar-wind plasma into the magnetosphere continues to be a prime area of research. While it is generally felt that magnetic merging must play some significant role, evidence continues to mount that it does not occur at the subsolar magnetopause, as previously supposed, and that other driving forces for antisunward convection must occur on closed field lines. A suggestion is made that many of the seemingly conflicting observations that have been made in the region of the dayside cusps can be explained if significant distortions of closed field lines near the dayside magnetopause are allowed and if closed and open field lines coexist in the cusp, particularly near the entry layer.Effects of the IMF on the nightside auroral oval and on the plasmapause stem chiefly from the expansion of the oval to lower latitudes which is produced by southward IMF components and from the impulsive substorm phenomena that become stronger and more probable with increasingly southward IMF.Proceedings of the Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics held in Innsbruck, May–June 1978.  相似文献

The paper reviews the importance of inductive electric fields in explaining different magnetospheric and auroral phenomena during moderately and highly disturbed conditions. Quiet-time particle energization and temporal development of the tail structure during the substorm growth phase are explained by the presence of a large-scale electrostatic field directed from dawn to dusk over the magnetotail. Conservation of the first adiabatic invariant in the neutral sheet with a small value of the gradient in the magnetic field implies that the longitudinal energy increases at each crossing of the neutral sheet. At a certain moment, this may result in a rapid local growth of the current and in an instability that triggers the onset. During the growth phase energy is stored mainly in the magnetic field, since the energy density in the electric field is negligible compared to that of the magnetic field (ratio 1: 107). An analytical model is described in which the characteristic observations of a substorm onset are taken into account. One major feature is that the triggering is confined to a small local time sector. During moderate disturbances, the induction fields in the magnetotail are stronger by at least one order of magnitude than the average cross-tail field. Temporal development of the disturbed area results in X- and O-type neutral lines. Particles near to these neutral lines are energized to over 1 MeV energies within a few seconds, due to an effective combination of linear and betatron acceleration. The rotational property of the induction field promotes energization in a restricted area with dimensions equivalent to a few Earth's radii. The model also predicts the existence of highly localized cable-type field-aligned currents appearing on the eastern and western edges of the expanding auroral bulge. It is shown that the predictions agree with satellite observations and with the data obtained from the two-dimensional instrument networks operated in Northern Europe during the International Magnetospheric Study (IMS, 1976–79).  相似文献

At the ionospheric level, the substorm onset (expansion phase) is marked by the initial brightening and subsequent breakup of a pre-existing auroral arc. According to the field line resonance (FLR) wave model, the substorm-related auroral arc is caused by the field-aligned current carried by FLRs. The FLRs are standing shear Alfvén wave structures that are excited along the dipole/quasi-dipole lines of the geomagnetic field. The FLRs (that can cause auroral arc) thread from the Earthward edge of the plasma sheet and link the auroral arc to the plasma sheet region of 6–15 R E. The region is associated with magnetic fluctuations that result from the nonlinear wave-wave interactions of the cross-field current-instability. The instability (excited at the substorm onset) disrupts the cross-tail current which is built up during the growth phase of the substorms and results in magnetic fluctuations. The diversion of the current to polar regions can lead to auroral arc intensification. The current FLR model is based on the amplitude equations that describe the nonlinear space-time evolution of FLRs in the presence of ponderomotive forces exerted by large amplitude FLRs (excited during substorms). The present work will modify the FLR wave model to include the effects arising from magnetic fluctuations that result from current disruption near the plasma sheet (6–15 R E). The nonlinear evolution of FLRs is coupled with the dynamics of plasma sheet through a momentum exchange term (resulting from magnetic fluctuations due to current disruption) in the generalized Ohm's law. The resulting amplitude equations including the effects arising from magnetic fluctuations can be used to study the structure of the auroral arcs formed during substorms. We have also studied the role of feedback mechanism (in a dipole geometry of the geomagnetic field) in the formation of the discrete auroral arc observed on the nightside magnetosphere. The present nonlinear dispersive model (NDM) is extended to include effects arising from the low energy electrons originating from the plasma sheet boundary layer. These electrons increase the ionospheric conductivity in a localized patch and enhance the field-aligned current through a feedback mechanism. The feedback effects were studied numerically in a dipole geometry using the the NDM. The numerical studies yield the magnitude of the field-aligned current that is large enough to form a discrete auroral arc. Our studies provide theoretical support to the observational work of Newell et al. that the feedback instability plays a major role in the formation of the discrete auroral arcs observed on the nightside magnetosphere.  相似文献

The current state of knowledge concerning Birkeland currents (j ) and parallel electric field (E ) is briefly reviewed. Four types of j are discussed-the primary ‘region 1’ sheets, the ‘region 2’ sheets which parallel them and which seem to close in the partial ring current, the cusp currents which appear to correlate with interplanetary B y, and the ‘Harang filament’. The energy required by E and by the associated particle acceleration processes seems to be derived from j . Much of the evidence for e comes from particles, from ‘inverted V’ spectra, rising ion beams and expanded loss cones, while ‘conies’ may signify acceleration by Electrostatic Ion Cyclotron (EIC) waves, associated with beams accelerated by E . Different theoretical studies predict for E a smooth, disordered or abrupt structure, and evidence for all 3 types can be deduced from S3-3 electric field probe observations.

The utilization of resonant oscillations for ionospheric modification experiments and ionospheric diagnosis, based on plasma physics and non-linear electrodynamics, is discussed. The spectra of resonant oscillations of natural and artificial origin in the polar ionosphere and the excitation of these oscillations and their development are analysed. The thermal instabilities in weakly ionized heterogeneous magnetoactive ionospheric plasma, due to plasma heating, are illustrated. The circle of resonant situations in the polar area is expanded essentially due to intense current systems in this region.  相似文献

The recent development of several new observational techniques as well as of advanced computer simulation codes has contributed significantly to our understanding of dynamics of the three-dimensional current system during magnetospheric substorms. This paper attempts to review the main results of the last decade of research in such diverse fields as electric fields and currents in the high-latitude ionosphere and field-aligned currents and their relationship to the large-scale distribution of auroras and auroral precipitation. It also contains discussions on some efforts in synthesizing the vast amount of the observations to construct an empirical model which connects the ionospheric currents with field-aligned currents. While our understanding has been greatly improved during the last decade, there is much that is as yet unsettled. For example, we have reached only a first approximation model of the three-dimensional current system which is not inconsistent with integrated, ground-based and space observations of electric and magnetic fields. We have just begun to unfold the cause of the field-aligned currents both in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Dynamical behaviour of the magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling relating to substorm variability can be an important topic during the coming years. On leave of absence from Kyoto Sangyo University, Kyoto 603, Japan.  相似文献

A sensitive search for pulsars inside a sample of gamma-ray source error boxes has been carried out using the Arecibo and Parkes radiotelescopes. The paper describes the motivation of this search and the characteristics of the experiments used. As a preliminary result, new pulsars have been discovered and some of them are possibly candidates to be the counterparts of the gamma-ray sources.  相似文献

Several previous and new S3-3 satellite results on DC electric fields, field-aligned currents, and waves are described, interpreted theoretically, and applied to the understanding of auroral particle acceleration at altitudes below 8000 km. These results include the existence of two spatial scale sizes (less than 0.1 degree and a few degrees invariant latitude) in both the perpendicular and parallel electric fields; the predominance of S-shaped rather than V-shaped equipotential contours on both spatial saales; the correlated presence of field-aligned currents, low frequency wave turbulence, coherent ion cyclotron wave emissions and accelerated upmoving ions and downgoing electrons; intense waves inside electrostatic shocks and important wave-particle interactions therein; correlations of field-aligned currents with magnetospheric boundaries that are determined by convection electric field measurements; electron acceleration producing discrete auroral arcs in the smaller scale fields and producing inverted-V events in the larger scale fields; ion and electron acceleration due to both wave-particle interactions and the parallel electric fields. Further analyses of acceleration mechanisms and energetics are presented. Also Department of Physics.  相似文献

The electron and ion beams which have been detected on many rockets and satellites are of particular interest because beam particles carry information about both the ionosphere and the magnetosphere out to the distant tail. Stability analyses have shown that even the most dramatic beams have evolved until the particle distribution functions are only weakly unstable. The shortest plasma wave growth lengths in the auroral region are usually comparable to the size of an arc. The resulting clearest electron beams generally are relatively minor features of distribution functions which are dominated by plateaus, loss cones, broad or stretched out field aligned features, and hot or cold isotropic components. The true electron beams therefore represent a small fraction of the total electron number density. Ion beams carry a much larger fraction of all ions, but also are only weakly unstable. The electron beams seen at low altitudes can drive whistlers (both electromagnetic and electrostatic, including lower hybrid waves) and upper hybrid waves, which may be particularly intense near electron gyroharmonics. Ion beams can drive low frequency electromagnetic waves that are related to gyrofrequencies of several ion species as well as ion acoustic and electrostatic ion cyclotron waves. These latter waves can be driven both by the drift of ion beams relative to cold stationary ions and by the drift of electrons relative to either stationary or drifting ions. Abrupt changes or boundaries in the electron and ion velocity space distribution functions (e.g. beams and loss cones) have been analyzed to provide information about the plasma source, acceleration process, and regions of strong wave-particle interactions. Fluid analyses have shown that upgoing ion beams carry a great deal of momentum flux from the ionosphere. This aspect of ion beams is analyzed by treating the entire acceleration region as a black box, and determining the forces that must be applied to support the upgoing beams. This force could be provided by moderate energy (10's of eV) electrons which are heated near the lower border of the acceleration region. It is difficult to use standard particle detectors to measure the particles which carry electric current in much of the magnetosphere. Such measurements may be relatively easy within upgoing ion beams because there is some evidence that few of the hard-to-measure cold plasma particles are present. Therefore, ion beam regions may be good places to study fluid or MHD properties of magnetospheric plasmas, including the identification of current carriers, a study of current continuity, and some aspects of the substorm and particle energization processes. Finally, some of the experimental results which would be helpful in an analysis of several magnetospheric problems are summarized.  相似文献

In the first part (Sections I–III) a brief historical review of the progress of our knowledge of the precipitation of auroral electrons is given. Observations by different techniques, in terms of detectors aboard balloons, sounding rockets, and polar-orbiting satellites, are reviewed (Sections I). The precipitation morphology is examined in terms of synoptic statistical results (Section II) and of latitudinal survey along individual satellite passes (Section III). In the second part (Section IV), a large number of simultaneous observations of auroras and precipitating auroral electrons by DMSP satellites are examined in detail, and it is shown that precipitation characteristics of auroral electrons are distinctly different for the discrete aurora and the diffuse aurora. In the third part (Section V), the source region of auroral electrons is discussed by comparing the auroral electron precipitation at low altitudes observed by DMSP satellites with the simultaneous ATS-6 observations near the magnetospheric equatorial plane approximately along the same geomagnetic field line. It is shown that the diffuse aurora is caused by direct dumping of the plasma sheet electrons from the equatorial region, whereas discrete auroras require acceleration of electrons between the plasma sheet and the polar atmosphere. The parallel electric field along the geomagnetic field line above the ionosphere is a likely candidate for the acceleration mechanism.Applied Physics Laboratory, The Johns Hopkins University, Laurel, Maryland 20810, U.S.A.  相似文献
