We have measured the isotopic abundances of neon and a number of other species in the galactic cosmic rays (GCRs) using the
Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer (CRIS) aboard the ACE spacecraft. Our data are compared to recent results from two-component
(Wolf–Rayet material plus solar-like mixtures) Wolf–Rayet (WR) models. The three largest deviations of galactic cosmic ray
isotope ratios from solar-system ratios predicted by these models, 12C/16O, 22Ne/20Ne, and 58Fe/56Fe, are very close to those observed. All of the isotopic ratios that we have measured are consistent with a GCR source consisting
of ∼20% of WR material mixed with ∼80% material with solar-system composition. Since WR stars are evolutionary products of
OB stars, and most OB stars exist in OB associations that form superbubbles, the good agreement of our data with WR models
suggests that OB associations within superbubbles are the likely source of at least a substantial fraction of GCRs. In previous
work it has been shown that the primary 59Ni (which decays only by electron-capture) in GCRs has decayed, indicating a time interval between nucleosynthesis and acceleration
of >105 y. It has been suggested that in the OB association environment, ejecta from supernovae might be accelerated by the high
velocity WR winds on a time scale that is short compared to the half-life of 59Ni. Thus the 59Ni might not have time to decay and this would cast doubt upon the OB association origin of cosmic rays. In this paper we
suggest a scenario that should allow much of the 59Ni to decay in the OB association environment and conclude that the hypothesis of the OB association origin of cosmic rays
appears to be viable. 相似文献

The galactic cosmic rays arriving near Earth, which include both stable and long-lived nuclides from throughout the periodic
table, consist of a mix of stellar nucleosynthesis products accelerated by shocks in the interstellar medium (ISM) and fragmentation
products made by high-energy collisions during propagation through the ISM. Through the study of the composition and spectra
of a variety of elements and isotopes in this diverse sample, models have been developed for the origin, acceleration, and
transport of galactic cosmic rays. We present an overview of the current understanding of these topics emphasizing the insights
that have been gained through investigations in the charge and energy ranges Z≲30 and E/M≲1 GeV/nuc, and particularly those using data obtained from the Cosmic Ray Isotope Spectrometer on NASA’s Advanced Composition
Explorer mission. 相似文献

We are making precise determinations of the abundance of the light isotope of helium, 3He. The 3He abundance in Milky Way sources impacts stellar evolution, chemical evolution, and cosmology. The abundance of 3He is derived from measurements of the hyperfine transition of 3He+ which has a rest wavelength of 3.46 cm (8.665 GHz). As with all the light elements, the present interstellar 3He abundance results from a combination of Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBNS) and stellar nucleosynthesis. We are measuring the
3He abundance in Milky Way H ii regions and planetary nebulae (PNe). The source sample is currently comprised of 60 H ii regions and 12 PNe. H ii regions are examples of zero-age objects that are young relative to the age of the Galaxy. Therefore their abundances chronicle
the results of billions of years of Galactic chemical evolution. PNe probe material that has been ejected from low-mass (M≤ 2M
⊙) to intermediate-mass (M∼2–5M
⊙) stars to be further processed by future stellar generations. Because the Milky Way ISM is optically thin at centimeter wavelengths,
our source sample probes a larger volume of the Galactic disk than does any other light element tracer of Galactic chemical
evolution. The sources in our sample possess a wide range of physical properties (including object type, size, temperature,
excitation, etc.). The 3He abundances we derive have led to what has been called “The 3He Problem”. 相似文献

The combination of recent observational and theoretical work has completed the catalog of the sources of heliospheric Pickup
Ions (PUIs). These PUIs are the seed population for Anomalous Cosmic Rays (ACRs), which are accelerated to high energies at
or beyond the Termination Shock (TS). For elements with high First Ionization Potentials (high-FIP atoms: e.g., H, He, Ne,
etc.), the dominant source of PUIs and ACRs is from neutral atoms that drift into the heliosphere from the Local Interstellar
Medium (LISM) and, prior to ionization, are influenced primarily by solar gravitation and radiation pressure (for H). After
ionization, these interstellar ions are pickup up by the solar wind, swept out, and are either accelerated near the TS or
beyond it. Elements with low first ionization potentials (low-FIP atoms: e.g., C, Si, Mg, Fe, etc.) are also observed as PUIs
by Ulysses and as ACRs by Wind and Voyager. But the low-FIP composition of this additional component reveals a very different
origin. Low-FIP interstellar atoms are predominantly ionized in the LISM and therefore excluded from the heliosphere by the
solar wind. Remarkably, a low-FIP component of PUIs was hypothesized by Banks (J. Geophys. Res. 76, 4341, 1971) over twenty years prior to its direct detection by Ulysses/SWICS (Geiss et al., J. Geophys. Res. 100(23), 373, 1995) The leading concept for the generation of Inner Source PUIs involves an effective recycling of solar wind on grains near
the Sun, as originally suggested by Banks. Voyager and Wind also observe low-FIP ACRs, and a grain-related source appears
likely and necessary. Two concepts have been proposed to explain these low-FIP ACRs: the first concept involves the acceleration
of the Inner Source of PUIs, and the second involves a so-called Outer Source of PUIs generated from solar wind interaction
with the large population of grains in the Kuiper Belt. We review here the observational and theoretical work over the last
decade that shows how solar wind and heliospheric grains interact to produce pickup ions, and, in turn, anomalous cosmic rays.
The inner and outer sources of pickup ions and anomalous cosmic rays exemplify dusty plasma interactions that are fundamental
throughout the cosmos for the production of energetic particles and the formation of stellar systems. 相似文献

The composition of Galactic Cosmic Ray Sources (GCRS) shows the following features: (i) an enhancement of the refractory elements
relative to the volatile ones, and (ii) an enhancement of the heavier volatile elements relative to the lighter ones; this
mass dependence should reflect a mass-to-charge (A/Q) dependence of the acceleration efficiency; among the refractory elements,
there is only a very weak enhancement of heavier species, or none at all. We consider it fortuitous that the GCRS composition
resembles that of the solar corona, which is biased according to first ionization potential. In a companion paper by Ellison
et al. (1998, this issue), this GCRS composition is interpreted in terms of a supernova shock wave acceleration of interstellar
and/or circumstellar (e.g., 22Ne-rich Wolf-Rayet wind) gas phase and especially dust grain material. These two papers summarize
and complement the content of two papers that recently appeared in Astrophys. J. (Meyer et al., 1997; Ellison et al., 1997).

The nonthermal particle production in contemporary starburst galaxies and in galaxy clusters is estimated from the Supernova rate, the iron content, and an evaluation of the dynamical processes which characterize these objects. The primary energy derives from SN explosions of massive stars. The nonthermal energy is transformed by various secondary processes, like acceleration of particles by Supernova Remnants as well as diffusion and/or convection in galactic winds. If convection dominates, the energy spectrum of nonthermal particles will remain hard. At greater distances from the galaxy almost the entire enthalpy of thermal gas and Cosmic Rays will be converted into wind kinetic energy, implying a fatal adiabatic energy loss for the nonthermal component. If this wind is strong enough then it will end in a strong termination shock, producing a new generation of nonthermal particles which are subsequently released without significant adiabatic losses into the external medium. In clusters of galaxies this should only be the case for early type galaxies, in agreement with observations. Clusters should also accumulate their nonthermal component over their entire history and energize it by gravitational contraction. The pion decay -ray fluxes of nearby contemporary starburst galaxies is quite small. However rich clusters should be extended sources of very high energy -rays, detectable by the next generation of systems of air Cherenkov telescopes. Such observations will provide an independent empirical method to investigate these objects and their cosmological history. 相似文献

Evolution and composition of baryonic matter is influenced by the evolution of other forms of matter and energy in the universe.
At the time of primordial nucleosynthesis the universal expansion and thus the decrease of the density and temperature of
baryonic matter were controlled by leptons and photons. Non-baryonic dark matter initiated the formation of clusters and galaxies,
and to this day, dark matter largely determines the dynamics and geometries of these baryonic structures and indirectly influences
their chemical evolution. Chemical analyses and isotopic abundance measurements in the solar system established the composition
in the protosolar cloud (PSC). The abundances of nuclear species in the PSC led to the discovery of the magic numbers and
the nuclear shell model, and they allowed the identification of nucleosynthetic sites and processes. To this day, we know
the abundances of the ∼300 stable and long-lived nuclides infinitely better in the PSC than in any other sample of matter
in the universe. Thus, we know the exact composition of a Galactic sample of intermediate age, allowing us to check on theories
of Galactic evolution before and after the formation of the solar system. This paper specifically discusses the nucleosynthesis
in the early universe and the Galactic evolution during the last 5 Gyr. 相似文献

We discuss data of light noble gases from the solar wind implanted into a metallic glass target flown on the Genesis mission.
Helium and neon isotopic compositions of the bulk solar wind trapped in this target during 887 days of exposure to the solar
wind do not deviate significantly from the values in foils of the Apollo Solar Wind Composition experiments, which have been
exposed for hours to days. In general, the depth profile of the Ne isotopic composition is similar to those often found in
lunar soils, and essentially very well reproduced by ion-implantation modelling, adopting the measured velocity distribution
of solar particles during the Genesis exposure and assuming a uniform isotopic composition of solar wind neon. The results
confirm that contributions from high-energy particles to the solar wind fluence are negligible, which is consistent with in-situ
observations. This makes the enigmatic “SEP-Ne” component, apparently present in lunar grains at relatively large depth, obsolete.
20Ne/ 22Ne ratios in gas trapped very near the metallic glass surface are up to 10% higher than predicted by ion implantation simulations.
We attribute this superficially trapped gas to very low-speed, current-sheet-related solar wind, which has been fractionated
in the corona due to inefficient Coulomb drag. 相似文献

We use energy spectra of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) measured with the Cosmic Ray instrument on the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft during the period 1994/157-313 to determine several parameters of interest to heliospheric studies. We estimate that the strength of the solar wind termination shock is 2.42 (–0.08, +0.04). We determine the composition of ACRs by estimating their differential energy spectra at the shock and find the following abundance ratios: H/He = 5.6 (–0.5, +0.6), C/He = 0.00048 ± 0.00011, N/He = 0.011 ± 0.001, O/He = 0.075 ± 0.006, and Ne/He = 0.0050 ± 0.0004. We correlate our observations with those of pickup ions to deduce that the long-term ionization rate of neutral nitrogen at 1 AU is 8.3 × 10–7 s–1 and that the charge-exchange cross section for neutral N and solar wind protons is 1.0 × 10–15 cm2 at 1.1 keV. We estimate that the neutral C/He ratio in the outer heliosphere is 1.8(–0.7, +0.9) × 10–5. We also find that heavy ions are preferentially injected into the acceleration process at the termination shock. 相似文献

Using high-resolution mass spectrometers on board the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE), we surveyed the event-averaged
∼0.1–60 MeV/nuc heavy ion elemental composition in 64 large solar energetic particle (LSEP) events of cycle 23. Our results
show the following: (1) The Fe/O ratio decreases with increasing energy up to ∼10 MeV/nuc in ∼92% of the events and up to
∼60 MeV/nuc in ∼64% of the events. (2) The rare isotope 3He is greatly enhanced over the corona or the solar wind values in 46% of the events. (3) The heavy ion abundances are not
systematically organized by the ion’s M/Q ratio when compared with the solar wind values. (4) Heavy ion abundances from C–Fe exhibit systematic M/Q-dependent enhancements that are remarkably similar to those seen in 3He-rich SEP events and CME-driven interplanetary (IP) shock events. Taken together, these results confirm the role of shocks
in energizing particles up to ∼60 MeV/nuc in the majority of large SEP events of cycle 23, but also show that the seed population
is not dominated by ions originating from the ambient corona or the thermal solar wind, as previously believed. Rather, it
appears that the source material for CME-associated large SEP events originates predominantly from a suprathermal population
with a heavy ion enrichment pattern that is organized according to the ion’s mass-per-charge ratio. These new results indicate
that current LSEP models must include the routine production of this dynamic suprathermal seed population as a critical pre-cursor
to the CME shock acceleration process. 相似文献

Galactic cosmic rays probably predominantly originate from shock-accelerated gas and dust in superbubbles. It is usually assumed
that the shock-accelerated dust is quickly destroyed by sputtering. However, it may be that some of the dust can survive bombardment
by the high-metallicity gas in the superbubble interior, and that some of that dust has been incorporated into solar system
materials. Interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) contain enigmatic submicron components called GEMS (Glass with Embedded Metal
and Sulfides). These GEMS have properties that closely match those expected of a population of surviving shock-accelerated
dust at the GCR source (Westphal and Bradley in Astrophys. J. 617:1131, 2004). In order to test the hypothesis that GEMS are synthesized from shock-accelerated dust in superbubbles, we plan to measure
the relative abundances of Fe, Zr, and Mo isotopes in GEMS using the new Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometer at Argonne
National Laboratory. If GEMS are synthesized from shock-accelerated dust in superbubbles, they should exhibit isotopic anomalies
in Fe, Zr and Mo: specificially, enhancements in the r-only isotopes 96Zr and 100Mo, and separately in 58Fe, should be observed. We review also recent developments in observations of GEMS, laboratory synthesis of GEMS-like materials,
and implications of observations of GEMS-like materials in Stardust samples. 相似文献

The heliosphere is bathed in the supersonic solar wind, which generally creates shocks at any obstacles it encounters: magnetic structures such as coronal mass ejections and planetary magnetospheres, or fast-slow stream interactions such as corotating interaction regions (CIRs) or the termination shock. Each of these shock structures has an associated energetic particle population whose spectra and composition contain clues to the acceleration process and the sources of the particles. Over the past several years, the solar wind composition has been systematically studied, and the long-standing gap between high energy (>1 MeV amu–1) and the plasma ion populations has been closed by instruments capable of measuring the suprathermal ion composition. In CIRs, where it has been possible to observe all the relevant populations, it turns out that the suprathermal ion population near 1.8–2.5 times the solar wind speed is the seed population that gets accelerated, not the bulk particles near the solar wind peak. These new results are of interest to the problem of Galactic Cosmic-Ray (GCR) Acceleration, since the injection and acceleration of GCRs to modest energies is likely to share many features with processes we can observe in detail in the heliosphere. 相似文献

Observations in the solar wind have revealed important insights into how energetic particles are accelerated in astrophysical
plasmas. In circumstances where stochastic acceleration is expected, a suprathermal tail on the distribution function is formed
with a common spectral shape: the spectrum is a power law in particle speed with a spectral index of −5. Recent theories for
this phenomenon, in which thermodynamic constraints are applied to explain the common spectral shape, are reviewed. As an
example of potential extensions of this theoretical work, consideration is given to the acceleration of Anomalous Cosmic Rays
in the heliosheath. 相似文献

The solar wind charge state and elemental compositions have been measured with the Solar Wind Ion Composition Spectrometers
(SWICS) on Ulysses and ACE for a combined period of about 25 years. This most extensive data set includes all varieties of
solar wind flows and extends over more than one solar cycle. With SWICS the abundances of all charge states of He, C, N, O,
Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar and Fe can be reliably determined (when averaged over sufficiently long time periods) under any solar wind
flow conditions. Here we report on results of our detailed analysis of the elemental composition and ionization states of
the most unbiased solar wind from the polar coronal holes during solar minimum in 1994–1996, which includes new values for
the abundance S, Ca and Ar and a more accurate determination of the 20Ne abundance. We find that in the solar minimum polar coronal hole solar wind the average freezing-in temperature is ∼1.1×106 K, increasing slightly with the mass of the ion. Using an extrapolation method we derive photospheric abundances from solar
wind composition measurements. We suggest that our solar-wind-derived values should be used for the photospheric ratios of
Ne/Fe=1.26±0.28 and Ar/Fe=0.030±0.007. 相似文献

Spatial, energy and angular distributions of ion fluxes in the Earth’s radiation belts (ERB) near the equatorial plane, at middle geomagnetic latitudes and at low altitudes are systematically reviewed herein. Distributions of all main ion components, from protons to Fe (including hydrogen and helium isotopes), and their variations under the action of solar and geomagnetic activity are considered. For ions with \(Z\geq 2\) and especially for ions with \(Z \geq 9\), these variations are much more than for protons, and these have no direct connection with the intensity of magnetic storms (\(Z\) is the charge of the atomic nucleus with respect to the charge of the proton). The main physical mechanisms for the generation of ion fluxes in the ERB and the losses of these ions are considered. Solar wind, Solar Cosmic Rays (SCR), Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR), and Anomalous component of Cosmic Rays (ACR) as sources of ions in the ERB are considered. 相似文献

Cool giant and supergiant stars generally present low velocity winds with high mass-loss rates. Several models have been proposed
to explain the acceleration process of these winds. Although dust is known to be present in these objects, the radiation pressure
on these particles is uneffective in reproducing the observed physical parameters of the wind. The most promising acceleration
mechanism cited in the literature is the transference of momentum and energy from Alfvén waves to the gas. Usually, these
models consider the wind to be isothermal. We present a stellar wind model in which the Alfvén waves are used as the main
acceleration mechanism, and determine the temperature profile by solving the energy equation taking into account both the
radiative losses and the wave heating. We also determine, self-consistently, the magnetic field geometry as the result of
the competition between the magnetic field and the thermal pressure gradient. As the main result, we show that the magnetic
geometry presents a super-radial index in the region where the gas pressure is increasing. However, this super-radial index
is greater than that observed for the solar corona. 相似文献

Here we discuss impacts of distance determinations on the Galactic disk traced by relatively young objects. The Galactic disk, \(\sim40~\mbox{kpc}\) in diameter, is a cross-road of studies on the methods of measuring distances, interstellar extinction, evolution of galaxies, and other subjects of interest in astronomy. A proper treatment of interstellar extinction is, for example, crucial for estimating distances to stars in the disk outside the small range of the solar neighborhood. We’ll review the current status of relevant studies and discuss some new approaches to the extinction law. When the extinction law is reasonably constrained, distance indicators found in today and future surveys are telling us stellar distribution and more throughout the Galactic disk. Among several useful distance indicators, the focus of this review is Cepheids and open clusters (especially contact binaries in clusters). These tracers are particularly useful for addressing the metallicity gradient of the Galactic disk, an important feature for which comparison between observations and theoretical models can reveal the evolution of the disk. 相似文献

An accurate value of the D/H ratio in the local interstellar medium (LISM) and a better understanding of the D/H variations
with position in the Galactic disk and halo are vitally important questions as they provide information on the primordial
D/H ratio in the Galaxy at the time of the protosolar nebula, and the amount of astration and mixing in the Galaxy over time.
Recent measurements have been obtained with UV spectrographs on FUSE, HST, and IMAPS using hot white dwarfs, OB stars, and
late-type stars as background light sources against which to measure absorption by D and H in the interstellar medium along
the lines of sight. Recent analyses of FUSE observations of seven white dwarfs and subdwarfs provide a weighted mean value
of D/H = (1.52±0.08) × 10−5 (15.2 ± 0.8 ppm), consistent with the value of (1.50 ± 0.10) × 10−5 (15.0 ± 1.0 ppm) obtained from analysis of lines of sight toward nearby late-type stars. Both numbers refer to the ISM within
about 100 pc of the Sun, which samples warm clouds located within the Local Bubble. Outside of the Local Bubble at distances
of 200 to 500 pc, analyses of far-UV spectra obtained with the IMAPS instrument indicate a much wider range of D/H ratios
between 0.8 to 2.2 ppm. This portion of the Galactic disk provides information on inhomogeneous astration in the Galaxy.

Anomalous cosmic rays are a heliospheric phenomenon in which interstellar neutral atoms stream into the heliosphere, are ionized by either solar radiation or the solar wind, and are subsequently accelerated to very high energies, greater than 1 GeV. Current thinking has the bulk of the acceleration to very-high energies taking place, by the mechanism of diffusive shock acceleration, at the termination shock of the solar wind. Detailed two-dimensional numerical simulations and models based on this picture show broad agreement with a number of the observed properties of anomalous cosmic rays. Recent improvements to this picture include the observation of multiply charged cosmic rays and the suggestion that some "preacceleration" of the initially ionized particles occurs in the inner heliosphere. 相似文献
