Asymptotically optimum radar detection in compound-Gaussian clutter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An asymptotically optimum receiver designed for detecting coherent pulse trains in compound-Gaussian clutter is introduced and assessed. The proposed receiver assumes knowledge of the structure of the clutter covariance matrix, but does not require that of its amplitude probability density function (apdf). Performance is analytically evaluated, showing that the loss, as measured with respect to the corresponding optimum structure, is kept within a few dBs even for a relatively small number of integrated pulses and that it largely outperforms the matched-filter detector under all instances of practical interest. Interestingly, the proposed detector achieves constant false alarm rate (CFAR), regardless of the clutter envelope distribution and, consequently, its power  相似文献

Correlated K-distributed clutter generation for radar detection andtrack   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The generation of correlated vectors for non-Gaussian clutter is considered for log normal, Weibull, and K-probability distributions. Previous results for log normal and Weibull distributions are summarized. Expressions for the probability distributions and moments of K-distributed clutter of any correlation are derived. Procedures for forming samples of each type of clutter are shown to be equivalent to passing white Gaussian noise through a linear filter followed by a nonlinear operation. Curves of correlation coefficients necessary for the simulation of these vectors are presented for each distribution  相似文献

Generalized radar clutter model   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
A commonly used density model for radar clutter is chi-square for power, or, equivalently, Rayleigh for amplitude. However, for many modern high resolution radar systems, this density underestimates the tails of the measured clutter density. Log normal and Weibull distributions have proved to be better suited for the clutter in these high resolution radars. Generalizing the chi-square density by replacing it with the noncentral chi-square density and allowing the mean power level (the noncentrality parameter) to vary, we can both suitably shape the clutter density to produce larger tails and model the fluctuation of the average clutter power, commonly referred to as speckle. The resulting form, although appearing cumbersome, readily allows for efficient and accurate computations of the probability of detection in clutter  相似文献

It is shown that in a situation where a radar target is distant enough from the radar and is included in a natural or artificial clutter environment in such a manner that the conventional detection methods fail, it is possible to improve the radar detection performance by using appropriate signal processing on two orthogonal polarization states. A CFAR (constant false alarm rate) polarimetric detection system based on the study of the polarization difference between clutter and target is proposed. Since the polarization state of the clutter echoes fluctuates slowly from cell to cell, an autoregressive model can be applied to the components of the polarization vector to predict the detection thresholds needed to follow the polarization state variation. The detection thresholds are determined to maintain a false alarm probability equal to 10-6. The presence of a target registers as a significant variation of the estimation error of the polarization vector. Results obtained from measurements of simple and canonical targets with artificial clutter are presented, and these results validate the principle of polarimetric detection  相似文献

High resolution radar clutter statistics   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The generalized compound probability density function (GC-pdf) is presented for modeling high resolution radar clutter. In particular, the model is used to describe deviation of the speckle component from the Rayleigh to Weibull or other pdfs with longer tails. The GC-pdf is formed using the generalized gamma (GΓ) pdf to describe both the speckle and the modulation component of the radar clutter. The proposed model is analyzed and thermal noise is incorporated into it. The validation of the GC-pdf with real data is carried out employing the statistical moments as well as goodness-of-fit tests. A large variety of experimental data is used for this purpose. The GC-pdf outperforms the K-pdf in modeling high resolution radar clutter and reveals its structural characteristics  相似文献

The degradation of conventional clutter processing filters due to missing pulses resulting from RF interference blanking, ambiguous range returns when no filter pulses are used, or eclipsing is described. The effects of a missing pulse on uncompensated and optimum clutter filters are investigated. The maximum improvement factor method and other methods are compared to the optimum filtering. New methods and results using a minimax log energy search method are described and are shown to provide performance and/or implementation complexity advantages  相似文献

A portable millimeter wave test radar system, also suitable for battery operation, gives interesting possibilities for clutter recordings at hard-to-reach sites. The designed system covers all common radar frequencies from the Ka- to V-bands and enables spatial detection of targets or clutter elements within an adjustable time gate, whereby spatial clutter profiles of rain can be analyzed. The construction allows full operation with non-scanning antennas as well. This is advantageous when measuring temporal RCS variations of selected targets or surface clutter from snow dunes.  相似文献

Space-time adaptive radar performance in heterogeneous clutter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Traditional analysis of space-time adaptive radar generally assumes the ideal condition of statistically independent and identically distributed (IID) secondary data. To the contrary, measured data suggests realistic clutter environments appear heterogeneous and so the secondary data is no longer IID. Heterogeneity leads to mismatch between actual and estimated covariance matrices, thereby magnifying the loss between the adaptive implementation and optimum condition. Concerns regarding the impact of clutter heterogeneity on space-time adaptive processing (STAP) warrant further study. To this end, we propose space-time models of amplitude and spectral clutter heterogeneity, with operational airborne radar in mind, and then characterize expected STAP performance loss under such heterogeneous scenarios. Simulation results reveal loss in signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) ranging between a few tenths of a decibel to greater than 16 dB for specific cases  相似文献

Radar detection in clutter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Clutter is defined as any unwanted radar return. The presence of clutter in a range/Doppler cell complicates the detection of a target return signal in that cell. In order to quantify the effect of clutter on the probability of detection, we must first specify sets of models suitable for representing the clutter and target. The simplest and most common model for clutter is based on the gamma density. We include two additional models, the NCG and NCGG clutter models for low grazing angles. They are motivated by physical arguments, the latter of which can accommodate the well-known phenomenon of speckle. Using one of these models for clutter together with one of several models for targets, we determine, in a range/Doppler cell, expressions for probabilities of detection of a target in the presence of clutter. It is important to control the probability of false alarms. The presence of clutter in a cell necessitates an increase in the detection threshold setting in order to control false alarms, thus lowering the probability of detection. If the clutter level is unknown, then we need to take measurements of the clutter and use it to adjust the threshold. The more clutter samples we take, the better the estimate of the clutter level and the less is the resulting detection loss. Using the expressions for the probability of detection in clutter, we can quantify the detection loss for a pair of commonly used constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) techniques and investigate how the loss varies with different parameter values, especially with regard to the number of clutter samples taken to estimate the clutter level.  相似文献

Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) holds tremendous potential for the new generation airborne surveillance radar, in which the phased array antennas and pulse Doppler processing mode are adopted. A new STAP approach using the multiple-beam and multiple Doppler channels is presented here for airborne phased array radar. The approach with space-time multiple-beam (STMB) architecture is robust to array errors and has very low system degrees of freedom (DOFs). Hence, it has low sample support requirement and it is very suitable for the practical planar phased array radar under nonhomogeneous clutter environments. Meanwhile, a new nonhomogeneous detector (NHD) based on the correlation dimension (CD) is also proposed here, which is used as an effective method to screen tracing data prior to detection processing. It can further improve the performance of the STAP approach in the severely nonhomogeneous clutter environments. Therefore, a scheme that incorporates the correlation dimension nonhomogeneity detector (CD-NHD) with the STMB is recommended, which we term CD-NHD-STMB. The experimental simulation results indicate that: 1) the STMB processor is robust to array element error and has high performance under nonhomogeneous clutter environments; 2) the CD-NHD is also effective on the nonhomogeneous clutter. As a result, the CD-NHD-STMB scheme is robust to array element error and nonhomogeneous clutter, and therefore available for airborne phased array radar applications.  相似文献

Computer generation of correlated non-Gaussian radar clutter   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
We develop computer simulation procedures which enable us to generate any correlated non-Gaussian radar clutter that can be modeled as a spherically invariant random process (SIRP). In most cases, when the clutter is a correlated non-Gaussian random process, performance of the optimal radar signal processor cannot be evaluated analytically. Therefore, in order to evaluate such processors, there is a need for efficient computer simulation of the clutter. We present two canonical simulation procedures for the generation of correlated non-Gaussian clutter. A new approach for the goodness-of-fit test is proposed in order to assess the performance of the simulation procedure  相似文献

The fundamentals of fractal geometry are reviewed, and its application to the millimeter-wave radar detection of stationary targets in a clutter background is described. First, high-range-resolution (HRR) profiles are used to determine the fractal interpolation functions needed to create fractal signatures. The fractal dimension is then determined for these signatures. On the basis of the value of the fractal dimension, the signature is declared to represent either a target of interest or clutter. The results of a CFAR (constant false alarm rate) simulation are presented to illustrate the performance of the method. They indicate that the fractal dimension feature used seems to be independent of amplitude. Thus, the fractal dimension information combined with traditional amplitude processing techniques will improve probabilities of detection  相似文献

Multipath and ground clutter analysis for a UWB noise radar   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
An ultrawideband (UWB) random-noise radar operating in the 1-2 GHz frequency band has been developed and field-tested up to a 200 m range at the Environmental Remote Sensing Laboratory (ERSL) of the University of Nebraska. A unique heterodyne correlation technique based on a delayed transmitted waveform using a photonic delay line has been used to inject coherence within this system. The performance of this radar in the presence of ground reflections is investigated analytically and experimentally, and the mitigating effects of UWB waveform on multipath-induced interference are analyzed. In addition, the ground clutter statistics, in a look-down mode, are theoretically established and experimentally verified. The performance of this radar in detecting clutter embedded targets with small radar cross section (RCS) is also experimentally examined.  相似文献

Validation of windblown radar ground clutter spectral shape   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We investigate the robustness of the linear matched filter (MF) operating in a Gaussian environment in the presence of a mismatch between the design clutter-power spectral density (PSD) shape and the actual one. The Gaussian, the power-law (PL), and the double-exponential spectral models have been considered with the goal of investigating which one fits best for windblown foliage. We analyze the MF performance in terms of improvement factor, probability of false alarm, and probability of detection by making use of the theoretical models and measured X-band ground clutter data. The numerical results validate the double-exponential spectral model for windblown foliage by showing that the differences in performance prediction between using measured clutter data and modeled clutter data of various spectral shapes (viz., Gaussian, FL, and double-exponential) are minimized when the spectral model employed is of double-exponential shape  相似文献

Statistical analyses of measured radar ground clutter data   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The performance of ground-based surveillance radars strongly depends on the distribution and spectral characteristics of ground clutter. To design signal processing algorithms that exploit the knowledge of clutter characteristics, a preliminary statistical analysis of ground-clutter data is necessary. We report the results of a statistical analysis of X-band ground-clutter data from the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Phase One program. Data non-Gaussianity of the in-phase and quadrature components was revealed, first by means of histogram and moments analysis, and then by means of a Gaussianity test based on cumulants of order higher than the second; to this purpose parametric autoregressive (AR) modeling of the clutter process was developed. The test is computationally attractive and has constant false alarm rate (CFAR). Incoherent analysis has also been carried out by checking the fitting to Rayleigh, Weibull, log-normal, and K-distribution models. Finally, a new modified Kolmogorov-Smirnoff (KS) goodness-of-fit test is proposed; this modified test guarantees good fitting in the distribution tails, which is of fundamental importance for a correct design of CFAR processors  相似文献

Radar detection of coherent pulse trains embedded in compound-Gaussian disturbance with partially known statistics is discussed. We first give a thorough derivation of two recently proposed adaptive detection structures. Next, we derive a different detection scheme exploiting the assumption that the clutter is wide-sense stationary. Resorting to the theory of circulant matrices, in fact, we demonstrate that the estimation of the structure of the clutter covariance matrix can be reduced to the estimation of its eigenvalues, which in turn can be (efficiently) done via fast Fourier transform codes. After a thorough performance assessment, mostly carried on via computer simulations, the results show that the newly proposed detector achieves better performance than the two previously introduced adaptive detectors. Moreover, a sensitivity analysis shows that, even though this detector does not strictly guarantee the constant false alarm rate property with respect to the clutter covariance matrix, it is robust, in the sense that its performance is only slightly affected by variations in the clutter temporal correlation  相似文献

Polarization diversity detection in compound-Gaussian clutter   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We present the problem of polarization diversity detection in compound-Gaussian clutter with unknown covariance matrix. To this end we assume that a set of secondary data, free of signal components and with the same covariance structure of the cell under test, is available. Due to the lack of a uniformly most powerful (UMP) detector we resort to a design procedure based upon the Rao and the Wald tests. Specifically we first derive the Rao and the Wald tests assuming that the covariance matrix is known, and then we substitute into the derived decision rules a suitable estimate of the clutter covariance. Interestingly, the newly proposed detectors share the constant false alarm rate (CFAR) property with respect to the texture statistical characterization. Moreover simulation results have shown that the Wald test based detector ensures a performance level higher than the Rao test. We have also conducted a further performance analysis, in the presence of real clutter data and in comparison with the previously proposed generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) based receivers, which highlights that, in general, the Wald test receiver outperforms its counterparts. Finally, since the newly proposed decision rules as well as the previously designed GLRTs do not ensure the CFAR property with respect to the clutter covariance matrix, we have developed a sensitivity analysis on the probability of false alarm (P/sub fa/), based on simulated clutter with covariance matrix estimated from real radar data. The results have shown that (P/sub fa/) is only slightly affected by variations in the clutter correlation properties and hence the CFARness is substantially achieved.  相似文献

Optimal CFAR detection in Weibull clutter   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Optimal, in the maximum likelihood sense, constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) detection for Weibull clutter statistics, is investigated. The proposed OW (optimal Weibull) estimator is proved to be an asymptotically efficient estimator of the mean power of the Weibull clutter. Theoretical analysis of the OW-CFAR detector is provided, while detection performance analysis is carried out using the Monte Carlo simulation method. The operation of the median and morphological (MEMO)-CFAR detector in Weibull clutter statistics is also explained. It performs almost optimally in uniform clutter and, simultaneously, it is robust in multitarget situations. The performance of the proposed OW-CFAR detector in uniformal Weibull clutter is used as a yardstick in the analysis of the MEMO cell-averager (CA) and ordered statistic (OS) CFAR detectors. Nonfluctuating and fluctuating (Swerling II) targets are considered in detection analysis. The performance of the detectors is also examined at clutter edges  相似文献
