Problems connected with mechanisms for comet brightness outbursts as well as for gamma-ray bursts remain open. Meantime, calculations show that irradiation of a certain class of comet nuclei, having high specific electric resistance, by intense fluxes of energetic protons and positively charged ions with kinetic energies more than 1 MeV/nucleon, ejected from the Sun during strong solar flares, can produce a macroscopic high-voltage electric double layer with positive charge in the subsurface zone of the nucleus, during irradiation times of the order of 10–100 h at heliocentric distances around 1–10 AU. The maximum electric energy accumulated in such layer will be restricted by the electric discharge potential of the layer material. For comet nuclei with typical radii of the order of 1–10 km the accumulated energy of such natural electric capacitor is comparable to the energy of large comet outbursts that are estimated on the basis of ground based optical observations. The impulse gamma and X-ray radiation together with optical burst from the comet nucleus during solar flares, anticipated due to high-voltage electric discharge, may serve as an indicator of realization of the processes above considered. Multi-wavelength observations of comets and pseudo-asteroids of cometary origin, having brightness correlation with solar activity, using ground based optical telescopes as well as space gamma and X-ray observatories, during strong solar flares, are very interesting for the physics of comets as well as for high energy astrophysics.  相似文献

The abundance and composition of complex organic (carbonaceous) material in the interstellar dust is followed as the dust evolves in its cyclic evolution between diffuse and dense clouds. Interstellar extinction, laboratory and space analog experiments, dust infrared absorption spectra, the cosmic abundance of the condensible atoms, and space and ground-based observations of comet dust are used to impose constraints on the organic dust component as mantles on silicate cores.  相似文献

A new population of uncatalogued objects in geosynchronous Earth orbits (GEO), with a mean motion of about 1 rev/day and eccentricities up to 0.6, has been identified recently. The first observations of this new type of objects were acquired in the framework of the European Space Agency’s (ESA) search for space debris in GEO and the geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) using the ESA 1-m telescope on Tenerife. Earlier studies have postulated that the perturbations due to the solar radiation pressure can lead to such large eccentricities for GEO objects with a high area-to-mass ratio (A/M). The simulations showed that the eccentricities of GEO objects with large A/M exhibit periodic variations with periods of about one year and amplitudes depending on the value of A/M. The findings of these studies could be confirmed by observations from the ESA 1-m telescope on Tenerife.  相似文献

A technique has been developed which allows relatively accurate modelling of cometary gas production from nothing more than a visible light curve. Application to P/Halley suggests the production rate of parent molecules will be about 2.6 × 1029 per second on March 10, 1986, for example. The uncertainties and intrinsic limitations in this approach are outlined. The theory is then extended to predictions of abundance of other gaseous species, and a photometric model of these gases provided. Combined with the dust model of N. Divine, preliminary predictions of the luminance of P/Halley as seen in any direction from inside the coma or outside can be provided for λλ3000–7000.  相似文献

Taking advantage of the cutoff computations performed for more than a hundred locations from 1955 to 1995 [every 5 years; Shea, M.A., Smart, D.F. Vertical cutoff rigidities for cosmic ray stations since 1955, in: Proceedings of the ICRC 2001, Hamburg, Copernicus Gesellschaft, vol. 10, pp. 4063–4066, 2001], we carefully checked the relationship between the vertical cutoff rigidity and the McIlwain parameter introduced by Shea et al. [Shea, M.A., Smart, D.F., Gentile, L.C. Estimating cosmic ray vertical cutoff rigidities as a function of the McIlwain L-parameter for different epochs of the geomagnetic field. Phys. Earth Planet. Int., 48, 200–205, 1987]. We derived an updated algorithm that can be used outside the polar and equatorial regions, avoiding time consuming computations. Results for the European area and 1990 epoch suggest that the fast evaluation is accurate within 0.1 GV in 26 out of the 30 considered locations.  相似文献

Measurements of the thermal emission from the cometary dust coma can be used to derive the rate of dust production from the nucleus as well as the size distribution of absorbing grains. More than ten short-period comets have now been observed in the infrared over a wide range in heliocentric distance. Dust production rates are derived for these comets based on theoretical models of the thermal emission from small absorbing grains and calculations of dust grain velocities. The mean size and albedo of the dust grains is similar in these comets, with the exception of Comet Crommelin, which seems to have had larger, darker grains.  相似文献

The “Potsdam-4” program system can model satellite orbits with a high accuracy by means of numerical integration. It takes into account gravitational forces of the earth, the moon, the sun, and non-gravitational forces, and realizes an inertial system with a high accuracy. On the basis of this orbit calculation, geodetic and geodynamic parameters can be determined by means of photographic, laser and Doppler observations.  相似文献

A massive new body of data, comprised of spectrophotometry of 17 comets by Newburn and Spinrad, has now become available for calibration of the basic theory, the Semi-Empirical Photometric Theory, used for modelling of Comet Halley. A redetermination of the constant R and the function δ has been made, and no change is needed. Improved mixing ratios given as a function of heliocentric distance also permit an improvement in the constants of the visual photometric model presented at COSPAR XXIV. A new light curve for Halley and a lower dust to gas ratio prove to make roughly compensating changes in dust densities.  相似文献

For the investigation of radiative properties of clouds using satellite images an objective parameter is required which is independent of conditions of illumination and of recorders. We found a new parameter - the relative brightness - which seems to serve this purpose. Using the relative brightness the daily amount of surface global radiation can be determined easily by linear regression with sufficient accuracy from METEOSAT images. Period between November 1981 and July 1983 was studied and our results are not worse than the ones using more complicated methods.  相似文献

Identifying spacecraft breakup events is an essential issue for better understanding of the current orbital debris environment. This paper proposes an observation planning approach to identify an orbital anomaly, which appears as a significant discontinuity in archived orbital history, as a spacecraft breakup. The proposed approach is applicable to orbital anomalies in the geostationary region. The proposed approach selects a spacecraft that experienced an orbital anomaly, and then predicts trajectories of possible fragments of the spacecraft at an observation epoch. This paper theoretically demonstrates that observation planning for the possible fragments can be conducted. To do this, long-term behaviors of the possible fragments are evaluated. It is concluded that intersections of their trajectories will converge into several corresponding regions in the celestial sphere even if the breakup epoch is not specified and it has uncertainty of the order of several weeks.  相似文献

Organic volatiles and water in Oort Cloud comets were investigated at infrared wavelengths. The detected species include H2O, CO, CH3OH, CH4, C2H2, C2H6, OCS, HCN, NH3, and H2CO. Several daughter fragments (CN, OH, NH2, etc.) are also measured, and OH prompt emission provides a proxy for water. Long-slit spectra are taken at high spectral dispersion and high spatial resolution, eliminating several sources of systematic error. The resulting parent volatile production rates are highly robust, permitting a sensitive search for compositional diversity among comets. Here, seven OC comets are compared. Six (including Halley) exhibit similar compositions (excepting CO and CH4). Their low formation temperatures (30 K) suggest this group probably formed beyond 30 AU from the young sun. However, C/1999 S4 is severely depleted in hypervolatiles and also in methanol, and it likely formed near 5–10 AU. C/2001 A2 is discussed briefly to illustrate future prospects.  相似文献

Theoretical work on the interpretation of high brightness temperature microwave spike emission is reviewed, with emphasis upon recent contributions from the University of Maryland. Recent work on the interpretation of the spike emission as gyrosynchrotron masering is reviewed. Two alternative radiation mechanisms, stimulated plasma emission from the coherent intraction of electrostatic upper hybrid waves and from the interaction of electron plasma waves, are also discussed.  相似文献

With the objective of developing Microwave Remote Sensing technology in the country, India has launched a series of Satellites Bhaskara-I and II with the microwave radiometer capability. In this paper, an attempt is made to demonstrate the capability of the brightness temperature data acquired by these radiometers to discriminate various soil moisture conditions of Indian land mass. We have investigated thermally promoted reactions of formaldehyde (H2CO) in very low temperature ices. No such reactions occurred in ices of pure formaldehyde. However, addition of trace amounts of ammonia (NH3) were sufficient to catalyze reactions at temperatures as low as 40 K. Similar reactions could take place in interstellar ices and in Comets and produce considerable amounts of organic molecules.  相似文献

On October 28, 2003 an Earthward-directed coronal mass ejection (CME) was observed from SOHO/LASCO imagery in conjunction with an X17 solar flare. The CME, traveling at nearly 2000 km/s, impacted the Earth on October 29, 2003 causing ground-based particle detectors to register a counting rate drop known as a Forbush decrease. The CME was not only responsible for affecting the rate of cosmic rays, but also caused anisotropies in their direction of incidence. Data from Project GRAND, an array of proportional wire chambers which detects secondary muons, are presented during the time of this Forbush decrease.  相似文献

In a study of the biological effects of cosmic HZE particles, lettuce (Lactuca sativa) seeds were flown on the orbital stations Salyut 6 and 7 for varying periods of time (from 40 to 457 days). The dependence of the biological damage on flight duration, physical parameters and the fact of passage of an HZE particle through the seed was estimated using the criterion of the frequency of aberrant cells. The arrangement of the flight biological container Biobloc made it possible to trace the location of tracks of individual HZE particles with Z > or = 6 and LET 200 keV/um. In seeds hit by HZE particles, for all exposure times, a statistically significant much higher yield of aberrant cells and also of cells containing multiple chromosome aberrations was observed than in the control material. The frequency of aberrant cells is markedly higher (by a factor of 1,5) in seeds hit than in non-hit ones. The changes of the yield of aberrant cells as a function of the absorbed dose (3.2-63.4 mGy) and the fluence (4.8-44.2 particles/cm2) are linear for the exposure duration ranging from 40 to 457 days.  相似文献

NASA has been making statistical measurements of the orbital debris environment for more than a decade using the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Haystack radar. The goal has been to characterize the environment for debris sizes as small as possible. Like all sensors which operate in the presence of noise, the Haystack radar has limited sensitivity. As the returned energy from small targets begins to approach the sensitivity limit of the radar, the probability-of-detection decreases, eventually approaching zero. The slope of the cumulative size distribution of debris begins to flatten out. This paper explores the possibility of extending the cumulative size distribution to smaller sizes by adjusting the distribution for probability-of-detection.  相似文献

In reviewing discussions of future directions for space activity, it becomes obvious that there are a large number of groups formulating a wide diversity of plans for the future use of space. These plan alternatives are being made to account for user needs, technology development constraints, economic constraints, and launch support, and each of the plans will have direct or indirect effects on the orbital debris environment in terms of mass to orbit, deposition of operational debris, and control of accidental breakups. Thus it is important to develop the ability to project future debris states for a range of possible space traffic scenarios. The impact that these possible traffic environments would have on space operations forms the basis for studies of alternative options for the usage of space. In this paper, the effects on the orbital debris environment of a base-line mission model and two alternatives are investigated, using a numerical debris environment simulation code under development at JSC.  相似文献

To understand the evolution of organic molecules involved in extraterrestrial environments and with exobiological implications, many experimental programs in the laboratory are devoted to photochemical studies in the gaseous phase as well as in the solid state. The validity of such studies and their applications to extraterrestrial environments can be questioned as long as experiments conducted in space conditions, with the full solar spectrum, especially in the short wavelength domain, have not been implemented. The experiments that are described here will be carried out on a FOTON capsule, using the BIOPAN facility, and on the International Space Station, using the EXPOSE facility. Vented and sealed exposition cells will be used, which will allow us to study the chemical evolution in the gaseous phase as well as heterogeneous processes, such as the degradation of solid compounds and the release of gaseous fragments.  相似文献

Preliminary results of the EU INTAS Project 00810, which aims to improve the methods of safeguarding satellites in the Earth’s magnetosphere from the negative effects of the space environment, are presented. Anomaly data from the “Kosmos” series satellites in the period 1971–1999 are combined in one database, together with similar information on other spacecraft. This database contains, beyond the anomaly information, various characteristics of the space weather: geomagnetic activity indices (Ap, AE and Dst), fluxes and fluences of electrons and protons at different energies, high energy cosmic ray variations and other solar, interplanetary and solar wind data. A comparative analysis of the distribution of each of these parameters relative to satellite anomalies was carried out for the total number of anomalies (about 6000 events), and separately for high (5000 events) and low (about 800 events) altitude orbit satellites. No relation was found between low and high altitude satellite anomalies. Daily numbers of satellite anomalies, averaged by a superposed epoch method around sudden storm commencements and proton event onsets for high (>1500 km) and low (<1500 km) altitude orbits revealed a big difference in a behavior. Satellites were divided on several groups according to the orbital characteristics (altitude and inclination). The relation of satellite anomalies to the environmental parameters was found to be different for various orbits that should be taken into account under developing of the anomaly frequency models.  相似文献
