The magnitude, dissipation mechanism, and spatial distribution of the solar wind - magnetospheric energy source are discussed briefly. Using N2 measurements of the ESRO 4 satellite, the temperature increase in the polar thermosphere associated with this energy source are investigated. Part of the locally dissipated energy is transported toward lower latitudes. Possible modes of energy transfer are reviewed, and local time variations are documented. Some suggestions are made with respect to future empirical models of the thermosphere.  相似文献

The diurnal tide in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) shows large seasonal and interannual variations. Despite recent modeling investigations, the underlying physical mechanisms for causing these variations remain unclear. This paper provides further observational constraints to tide-sensitive variables (H2O, O3, and gravity wave variances) used by the models, which are obtained simultaneously by upper atmosphere research satellite microwave limb sounder at altitudes below the MLT region. The strong quasi biannual oscillation and semiannual oscillation variations in these measurements reveal good correlations between the diurnal tide with other tide-sensitive variables, which should be taken into account for further modeling studies.  相似文献

Based on a simplified theoretical interpretation of the composition measurements with the ONMS and OIMS experiments on Pioneer Venus, the conclusion was drawn that the rotation rate of the thermosphere should be close (within a factor of two) to that of the lower atmosphere. A more realistic three-dimensional model of the thermosphere dynamics is now being developed, considering non-linear processes, higher order modes and collisional momentum exchange between the major species CO2, CO and O, which describes the diurnal variations in temperature and composition (Niemann et al., JGR, 1980). The computed horizontal winds are about 300 m/sec near the terminators and poles. Results are also presented from a two-dimensional (quasi-axisymmetric) spectral model which describes the four day superrotation in the lower atmosphere of Venus.  相似文献

A preliminary analysis of high-resolution infrared spectra of the aurorally dosed lower thermosphere above Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Alaska, obtained by an uplooking cryogenic field-widened interferometer (FWI) is presented. Both models and spectral-fitting/resolution-enhancement methods are used to discuss the behavior of NO, CO, NO+, and CO2 v3 vibrational bands in the high-latitude thermosphere.  相似文献

The different types of variation in the thermosphere are briefly examined and the solar-activity effect is singled out for special attention. To this day, empirical models have made use of the decimetric solar flux F10.7 as an index of the variable XUV radiation from the sun. To account for the change in the relative intensity of the different types of emissions in the course of the solar cycle, F10.7 is made to perform double duty: The daily values are used to represent the day-to-day and “27-day” variations, while its averages over several solar rotations are used to represent the variations with the 11-year cycle. The availability of direct solar XUV data should eventually eliminate the need for such a make-shift procedure. Accuracy and continuity requirements of XUV intensity measurements are discussed and a strategy is outlined for sorting out the relevant features from the observational material and putting them to practical use in thermospheric modeling. It is suggested that future models of the diurnal and the geomagnetic variation use as a guide theoretical models which have achieved considerable success in qualitatively representing the observed phenomena.  相似文献

Theoretical and semi-empirical models of the solar UV/EUV and of the geomagnetic driving forces affecting the terrestrial mesosphere and thermosphere have been used to generate a series of representative numerical time-dependent and global models of the thermosphere, for the range of solar and geomagnetic activity levels which occurred during the three Thermospheric Mapping Study (TMS) periods. The simulations obtained from these numerical models are compared with observations, and with the results of semi-empirical models of the thermosphere. The theoretical models provide a record of the magnitude of the major driving forces which affected the thermosphere during the study periods, and a baseline against which the actual observed structure and dynamics can be compared.  相似文献

对2001-2021年SOHO卫星的极紫外辐射测量数据,以及CHAMP,GRACE-A和SWARM-C卫星资料推导出的高分辨率大气密度数据进行统计分析,发现大气密度与极紫外测量值的相关系数大于密度与F10.7指数的相关系数,证实极紫外辐射在不同地方时的影响程度存在显著差异,从而驱动大气密度的周日变化。利用三颗卫星的高度差异揭示极紫外辐射对大气密度的加热效应在350~500 km范围随着高度增加而减弱。统计得到极紫外辐射影响在地方时和纬度上的空间差异:对夏季半球的影响大于冬季半球;在白天,对中纬度地区的影响高于赤道和高纬度地区;在夜间,密度对辐射的斜率在夏季半球高纬度地区存在峰值,在冬季半球中纬度存在谷值,模型DTM2000和NRLMSISE00未能准确刻画。为了改进经验模型,提出基于球谐函数的拟合方法,优于主流模型周日效应采用的表达式,对周日效应建模和修正提供有益借鉴。利用昼夜间能量传输和热层大气经向环流机制探讨了统计结果的物理机制。  相似文献

A possible quantitative explanation of the semi-annual variation in thermospheric density has been obtained in terms of a semi-annual variation in the computed globally averaged vertical energy carried by propagating tides from the lower and middle atmosphere into the thermosphere. The effect is primarily due to seasonal changes in the distribution of water vapor and in the solar declination angle and Sun-Earth distance. An MSIS-83 empirical model of the thermosphere, representing a revision of the earlier MSIS models, has been prepared. The database used covers a wider range of solar activity than previous models and an improved magnetic storm representation is included. Atomic oxygen profiles in the 100 to 160 km altitude region of the auroral thermosphere have been recalculated from measured quenching of N2(A3u+) using the latest laboratory rates and the results are in good agreement with the mean CIRA 1972 profile. A new empirical model of thermospheric variations with geomagnetic activity has been developed incorporating variations with local magnetic time, latitude dependent terms which can vary with the magnitude of the geomagnetic disturbance, and an altitude dependent expression for the equatorial wave. A new index ML, derived from the AL index, has been developed that appears to have promise to represent the variations of thermospheric species with geomagnetic activity. Satellite measured values of solar UV flux, ground-based observations of CaK plages, sunspot numbers and 10.7 cm solar radio flux have been analyzed for temporal variations. Some differences have been identified and the significance to empirical and theoretical upper atmosphere models is discussed.  相似文献

Neutral exospheric and lower thermospheric (100–130 km) temperatures from Thomson scatter measurements at Millstone Hill (42°N) are compared with CIRA temperatures with a view towards identifying deficiencies in the CIRA and recommending revisions. CIRA models the observed diurnal mean temperatures (T0) to within 10% over a wide range of solar conditions (75? F10.7 ? 250), but consistently underestimates the diurnal temperatures with maximum deviations approaching 50% of observed amplitudes (180–240 K) at solar maximum (1200 K ? T0 ? 1400 K). The observed semidiurnal amplitudes, which lie in the range of 20K–80K, are always underestimated and frequently by more than 50%. In the lower thermosphere, tidal oscillations of temperature of order 20K–40K occur which are not modelled by CIRA. In addition, an analysis of exospheric temperatures at Millstone Hill during a magnetic disturbance indicates a response within 1–2 hours from storm onset, whereas CIRA assumes a 6.7 hour delay. Although some of these deficiences are addressed by the more recent MSIS model, there exists a sufficient data base to recommend several additional revisions to the CIRA temperatures at this time.  相似文献

The plausible mechanisms of cooling of the nightside Venus' thermosphere are analysed with the aid of the model of the atmospheric heat budget that incorporates, in addition to thermal conduction and IR radiation in the 15 μ band of CO2, heating and cooling due to global scale winds, eddy turbulence, and IR radiation in the rotational bands of H2O and CO, as well as the 63 μ line of atomic oxygen. The H2O mixing ratio and parameters of turbulence required for cooling of the thermosphere down to the observed low temperatures are evaluated.  相似文献

During recent years, special attention has been paid to understanding the background circulation of the middle atmosphere. Particularly in the mesosphere/lower thermosphere (MLT) region, this has involved including data from a range of new radar measurements. It has also involved the comparison of existing empirical middle atmosphere wind models, such as CIRA-86 and HWM-93 to the new data. This has led to the construction of empirical models of MLT winds such as the Global Empirical Wind Model (GEWM). Further investigations are aimed at the construction of new empirical and semi-empirical wind models of the entire middle atmosphere including these new experimental results. The results of a new wind climatology (0–100 km) are presented here, based upon the GEWM, a reanalysis of stratospheric data, and a numerical model which is used to fill the gap between data from the stratospheric and MLT regions.  相似文献

介绍了中国气象局山西岢岚大气观测站(39°N, 112°E) 法 布里-珀罗干涉仪(FPI) 的基本 构造、测风能力、程序处理流程、数据质量控制方法以及检验情况. 岢 岚观测站FPI可以观测892.0 (OH)nm, 557.7 (OI)nm和630.0 (OI)nm 波 长处气辉谱线的多普勒移动, 分别计算对应87km, 97km和250km高度处 的大气风速和大气温度, 可给出中间层顶区域及热层风的大气潮汐和扰动 情况. 采用水平风模型(HWM)输出结果进行交叉检验, 对FPI测风数据质量进行验证. 结果显示, 岢岚大气观测站FPI仪器的测风数据 在长期趋势上与HWM模式的输出数据一致, 风速变化幅度有季节性差异, 数据质 量控制方法有效, 测风误差在87km高度处为5.7m·s-1, 97km处 为1.3m·s-1, 250km处为4.1m·s-1, 测风数据 通过了可靠性检验.   相似文献

The contributions of the incoherent scatter radar technique to the development of thermospheric models is traced from the development of the radar technique in 1958. Emphasis is given to the qualitative information regarding thermospheric processes and behavior provided by the radar studies and the role that these results have played in the structural development of thermospheric models. The complementary nature of radar and satellite data in the development of recent models is stressed. In addition, a summary of pertinent radar developments over the past two years is presented. Primary among these are measurements made by high-latitude radars, multi-radar coordinated observations, the establishment of an incoherent scatter radar data base, and publication of a number of studies concerning high-latitude measurements, solar-cyle maximum results, long-term data sets, and lower thermosphere tides.  相似文献

Semi-empirical models are derived predominantly from satellite-borne observations. The nature of these observations restricts the applicability of the models mainly to the atmospheric regions sampled, i.e. the upper thermosphere. Current models are only capable of reproducing a zero-order approximation of the structure of the lower thermosphere. Based on selected examples, the progress in atmospheric research since CIRA-72 as well as the continuing deficiencies are demonstrated.  相似文献

A brief review is given of the development of models of the geomagnetic variation in the thermosphere and exosphere, including some recent models based mainly on satellite-borne gas analyzer measurements. One recent model, derived from ESRO4 data, is described in detail and compared with the model in CIRA72. The limitations of this model are discussed. The model in the MSIS comprehensive model is also examined briefly. There appears to be a serious error in the amplitude of the exospheric temperature increase predicted by the MSIS model.  相似文献

The performance of JB2008 and NRLMSISE-00 models, in describing the response of the thermosphere to magnetic activity are evaluated against total mass density retrieved from accelerometer measurements made onboard CHAMP satellite during 5 years. We show that the global low- to mid-latitude disturbance amplitude is correctly described by the JB2008 model for low solar activity conditions and by both the JB2008 and the NRLMSISE-00 models for high solar activity conditions. For low solar activity conditions, statistics based on almost 3 years of data confirm the large underestimation by the NRLMSISE-00 model quantified by Lathuillère et al. (2008) for the year 2004. We also found that the time delay between low- to mid-latitude global thermosphere disturbance and magnetic activity is statistically well estimated by the NRLMSISE-00 and JB2008 models for disturbed conditions. For moderately disturbed conditions however, the time delay estimated by the JB2008 model is too large by about 3 h. For very disturbed conditions, we found different time delays during day-time and night-time, using new geomagnetic proxies with a 30-min time resolution.  相似文献

The Accelerometer Experiment (ACC) onboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) measured 1600 density profiles in the upper atmosphere of Mars during aerobraking. These measurements reveal large-scale and small-scale structure in the thermosphere of Mars. Here, the measurements of mass density for 115 orbits (#P0670–P0789) from November 1 to 30, 1998, under spring equinox and medium solar activity conditions (average F10.7 ∼ 137) during phase 2 of the aerobraking in the thermosphere of Mars at different altitudes and longitudes are presented for northern mid-latitude (17–42°N) in the dayside atmosphere using ACC onboard MGS. From these mass densities, the neutral densities of different gases are derived from their mixing ratios. Using these neutral densities, the longitudinal distribution of photoionization rates and photoelectron impact ionization rates are calculated at wavelength range 1–102.57 nm due to EUV and soft X-ray radiation under photochemical controlled region using Analytical Yield Spectrum approach (AYS). These conditions are appropriate for MGS Phase 2 aerobraking period from which the accelerometer data is used. Under the photochemical equilibrium condition, the electron density near the peak varies as the square root of the total peak ionization rate. Using this fact, an attempt is being made to estimate the mean primary and secondary peak electron density by averaging the longitudinal variations of total peak ionization rates in the northern mid-latitude (17–42°N) ionosphere of Mars, as there is no radio science measurement at this latitude region by MGS.  相似文献
