The definitive data set for the mean thermal structure of the Venusian middle atmosphere is published for the first time. Some recent interim results on a modelling study to interpret the measured thermal field in terms of the global dynamics are also presented. These indicate that (a) the zonal winds on Venus fall to very low values above about 90 km, (b) there is a strong mid-latitude jet which circles the planet approximately every two days, (c) the observed solar tides are dominated by the semi-diurnal component, in agreement with theory. 相似文献

The general characteristics of middle atmospheric thermal structure have been studied by making use of the Rayleigh lidar data collected over the period of about four years (1998–2001). Here, the data has been used from two different stations in the Indian sub-continent in tropics (Gadanki; 13.5°N, 79.2°E) and in sub-tropics (Mt. Abu; 24.5°N, 72.7°E). The observed monthly mean temperature profiles are compared with different model atmospheres (CIRA-86 and MSISE-90). We observed, the mean temperature profiles have closer agreement with MSISE-90 than CIRA-86. The temperature profiles measured by lidar and HALOE satellite overpass nearby lidar site are generally in agreement with each other. The systematic and statistical errors in deriving temperature are found to be uniform for both the stations, as 1 K at 50 km, 3 K at 60 km and 10 K at 70 km. The special features of mesospheric temperature inversion (MTI) and double stratopause structure (DBS) are also addressed for both the stations. 相似文献

From a critical comparison and synthesis of data from the four Pioneer Venus Probes, the Pioneer Venus Orbiter, and the Venera 10, 12, and 13 landers, models of the lower and middle atmosphere of Venus are derived. The models are consistent with the data sets within the measurement uncertainties and established variability of the atmosphere. The models represent the observed variations of state properties with latitude, and preserve the observed static stability. The rationale and the approach used to derive the models are discussed, and the remaining uncertainties are estimated. 相似文献

Despite its lack of an intrinsic magnetic field Venus has a well defined magnetotail, containing about 3 megawebers of magnetic flux in a tail about 4 RV across with perhaps a slightly elliptical cross section. This tail arises through the mass-loading of magnetic flux tubes passing by the planet. Mass-loading can occur due to charge exchange and photo-ionization as well as from the diffusion of magnetic field into the ionosphere. Various evidence exists for the mass-loading process, including the direct observation of the picked up ions with both the Venera and Pioneer Venus plasma analyzers. 相似文献

The dissipation of energy of electric fields and currents in the polar auroral atmosphere is a major source of energy for the thermosphere ranging locally up to 100 ergs cm?2 sec?1 and perhaps more during the most intense disturbance. Globally the input of energy to the thermosphere can often exceed that due to solar EUV radiation. This energy source is always significant in polar regions and its variable strength with respect to that of the solar EUV radiation determines the behaviour of the middle and low latitude thermosphere. It is extremely difficult to model because of its variability in space and time. Nevertheless understanding the dynamics and composition of the global thermosphere is dependent upon incorporation of this source realistically into models. A further important aspect of this energy source is the consequences of its action in changing the density and composition of the thermosphere globally leading to subsequent changes in the absorption of solar EUV radiation. The ring current may also, at times, be a significant source of energy to the low latitude thermosphere. 相似文献

Models of the Venus neutral upper atmosphere, based on both in-situ and remote sensing measurements, are provided for the height interval from 100 to 3,500 km. The general approach in model formulation was to divide the atmosphere into three regions: 100 to 150 km, 150 to 250 km, and 250 to 3,500 km. Boundary conditions at 150 km are consistent with both drag and mass spectrometer measurements. A paramount consideration was to keep the models simple enough to be used conveniently. Available observations are reviewed. Tables are provided for density, temperature, composition (CO2, O, CO, He, N, N2, and H), derived quantities, and day-to-day variability as a function of solar zenith angle on the day- and nightsides.Estimates are made of other species, including O2 and D. Other tables provide corrections for solar activity effects on temperature, composition, and density. For the exosphere, information is provided on the vertical distribution of normal thermal components (H, O, C, and He) as well as the hot components (H, N, C, O) on the day- and nightsides. 相似文献

Equilibrium models of diffuse interstellar material (ISM) near the Sun show a range of cloud densities, ionization, and temperatures which are consistent with data, although the local ISM must be inhomogeneous over ∼2 pc scales. The ISM close to the Sun has properties that are consistent with the sheetlike warm neutral (and partially ionized) gas detected in the Arecibo Millennium Survey. Local interstellar magnetic fields are poorly understood, but data showing weak polarization for nearby stars indicate dust may be trapped in fields or currents in the heliosheath nose region. Implications of this dust capture are widespread, and may impact the interpretation of the cosmic microwave background data. Observations of interstellar H0 inside of the solar system between 1975 and 2000 do not suggest any variation in the properties or structure of local interstellar H0 over distance scales of ∼750 AU to within the uncertainties. 相似文献

A theoretical study of the production, thermalization and escape, of hot atomic hydrogen and deuterium in the exosphere of Venus is presented. The approach adopted involves the quantum mechanical calculation of the charge exchange collision cross sections for (H+, H) and (D+, H) collisions, the production of translationally energetic atoms, and their ensuing thermalization and escape from Venus. A kinetic theory which employs the quantum mechanical collision cross sections and accounts for the production, thermalization and escape of hot atoms is described. Preliminary numerical results for escape fluxes calculated with density and temperature profiles as provided from the Pioneer Venus orbiter are presented. 相似文献

The observed magnetic field configuration in the Venus magnetosheath contains information about the solar wind mass-loading processes occurring as a result of the extension of the neutral atmosphere into the magnetosheath. In this paper, magnetic field signatures of various mass-loading processes are discussed and experimental results from the Pioneer Venus Orbiter magnetometer experiment are examined for evidence of these signatures. The data suggest that the ?X acceleration process, stochastic pickup of ionospheric ions, and X force “scavenging” at the ionopause all occur at various times. 相似文献

Parameters of the best-fitting tri-axial ellipsoids representing external equipotential surfaces of Venus and Mars have been determined from satellite data. The dynamic consequence of the equatorial flattening of Venus has been discussed from the point of view of the s.c. synodic resonance rotation. The major gravitational anomalies of Venus have been interpreted, space locations and magnitudes of anomalous masses determined and their contribution to the second zonal Stokes' constant in the gravitational potential computed. The conclusions were done: The figure of the aphroditoid is strange even if there is a relatively small polar flattening; an equatorial “disc” of Venus is enormous. This work is devoted to the derivation of the optical properties of the Venus atmosphere from “Venera-10” optical measurements. Within the framework of a two-layer model of Venus atmosphere it is found that in the spectral interval 0.52 – 0.85 μm the optical thickness of the upper cloud layer is ≈ 50 and the optical parameters of the lower layer are similar to the Rayleigh ones. Comparison is made between the measurements of radiation field within the atmosphere and the results of strict calculations. A preliminary conclusion is suggested that there are considerable numbers of aerosol particles with a radius ? 0.03 μm in the lower layer. The results of the upper boundary of the cloud layer is estimated to be ≈ 70 km. 相似文献

Model calculations of the dayside ionosphere of Venus are presented. The coupled continuity and momentum equations were solved for O2+, O+, CO2+, C+, N+, He+, and H+ density distributions, which are compared with measurements from the Pioneer Venus ion mass spectrometer. The agreement between the model results and the measurements is good for some species, such as O+, and rather poor for others, such as N+, indicating that our understanding of the dayside ion composition of Venus is incomplete. The coupled heat conduction equations for ions and electrons were solved and the calculated temperatures compared with Pioneer Venus measurements. It is shown that fluctuations in the magnetic field have a significant effect on the energy balance of the ionosphere. 相似文献
