A balloon borne winching system has been developed for extending a very long tether with payload down into the stratosphere and recovering it; this has been flight proven by being carried to an altitude of 40 km, lowering a 62 kg stratospheric photochemistry experiment 12 km at a descent velocity of ~6–8 m/sec and recovering it at comparable velocities. During the first flight, data gave no evidence of dynamic instabilities due to the system or the stratospheric interactions. The future utility of this payload is discussed with attention to the design factors that bound the range of performance of this type of system.  相似文献

A balloon observation of the total solar eclipse on 11 June 1983 was carried out as a cooperative work between Japanese and Indonesian teams. The observation was a photo-polarimetry of the F corona in both visual and near-infrared regions. The balloon of 15,000-m3 with a payload of 150-kg was launched at 7h13m on 11 June from Watukosek Balloon Base in East Java. Observation at an altitude of 30.5-km was successfully made during the totality (11h28~32m) at a position of ~40-km east-south-east from Jogjakarta. As a preliminary result, an excess in infrared brightness has been found near the position of 3.8R west from the sun, which may be due to thermal emission from a high-temperature dust cloud located around the sun.  相似文献

Current status of scientific ballooning in Japan is reviewed. First, I describe successful application of balloon technologies to construct a vessel of transparent plastic film, to contain about 1000 tons of liquid scintillator in Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti-Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). KamLAND is a project to study neutrino oscillation phenomena, by detecting anti-neutrinos produced in distant nuclear reactors. Next, I describe high altitude balloons developed by the ISAS balloon group. They developed balloons made from ultra-thin polyethylene film, producing a balloon of volume 60,000 m3 which successfully reached an altitude of 53 km in 2002. This is a world record, the greatest altitude that a balloon has ever achieved. ISAS is applying further effort to develop balloons with even thinner films, to achieve a higher altitude than 53 km. Other recent activities by the ISAS balloon group are briefly described.I also review scientific ballooning projects now operating in Japan, particularly focusing on the Balloon-Borne Experiment with a Superconducting Spectrometer (BESS) program. This is a US–Japan collaborative program that has carried out very precise measurements of antiprotons, protons and other components in primary cosmic rays, as well as measuring the fluxes of atmospheric muons and other components. The results of these observations give us important information to improve our understanding of the production mechanism of antiprotons observed in the primary cosmic rays. The data are also important for analysis of atmospheric neutrino events observed by Super-Kamiokande and other ground-based neutrino detectors. Future prospects of BESS and other balloon-borne cosmic-ray research programs are also presented.  相似文献

Balloon-borne winches, which can reel down and up scientific instruments repeatedly, have been developed since 1981 in order to observe stratospheric vertical microstuctures. The instrument is suspended by a kevler wire through a traverse-cum ropeguide, and its depth is accurately measured by counting numbers of spool rotations and ropeguide turns. Battery consumption is minimized by utilizing an efficient deccelerator and a hysteresis brake. In 1983 we have successfully performed to reel up and down a 12 kg payload through 1 km for three cycles at 24 km altitude. We are improving the capability of the winch, and have succeeded (May 1984) to reel down a 22 kg payload up to 3 km from a balloon.  相似文献

A balloon borne multichannel photometer for measurement of atmospheric scattering in the near ultraviolet and the visible wavelength regions has been developed at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad for study of the size distribution and number density of aerosols at tropospheric and lower stratospheric altitudes. The instrumentation involves tracking the sun in elevation and scanning in azimuth. The payload was recently flown on a 100 kg. balloon from the Hyderabad Balloon Facility on 18 April 1984. The balloon reached a float altitude of 35 km and good quality data has been obtained from an altitude of 6 km upto float altitude. Data analysis is still in progress. The present paper details the instrument design and presents a few illustrations of the instrument performance from this flight.  相似文献

Development of a balloon to fly at higher altitudes is one of the most attractive challenges for scientific balloon technologies. After reaching the highest balloon altitude of 53.0 km using the 3.4 μm film in 2002, a thinner balloon film with a thickness of 2.8 μm was developed. A 5000 m3 balloon made with this film was launched successfully in 2004. However, three 60,000 m3 balloons with the same film launched in 2005, 2006, and 2007, failed during ascent. The mechanical properties of the 2.8 μm film were investigated intensively to look for degradation of the ultimate strength and its elongation as compared to the other thicker balloon films. The requirement of the balloon film was also studied using an empirical and a physical model assuming an axis-symmetrical balloon shape and the static pressure. It was found that the film was strong enough. A stress due to the dynamic pressure by the wind shear is considered as the possible reason for the unsuccessful flights. A 80,000 m3 balloon with cap films covering 9 m from the balloon top will be launch in 2011 to test the appropriateness of this reinforcement.  相似文献

We have observed cosmic-ray electrons from 10 to 1000 GeV by a long duration balloon flight using Polar Patrol Balloon (PPB) in Antarctica. The observation was carried out for 13 days at an altitude of 35 km in January 2004. The detector is an imaging calorimeter composed of scintillating-fiber belts and plastic scintillators inserted between lead plates. The geometrical factor of detector is about 600 cm2sr and the total thickness of lead absorber is 9 radiation lengths. The performance of the detector has been confirmed by the CERN-SPS beam test and also investigated by Monte-Carlo simulations. New telemetry system using a commercial satellite of iridium, power supply by solar batteries, and automatic level control using CPU have successfully been developed and operated during the flight. We have collected 5.7 × 103 events over 100 GeV including nearly 100 candidates of primary electrons.

Although it has been suggested that microgravity might affect drug absorption in vivo, drug permeability across epithelial barriers has not yet been investigated in vitro during modelled microgravity. Therefore, a cell culture/diffusion chamber was designed specifically to accommodate epithelial cell layers in a 3D-clinostat and allow epithelial permeability to be measured under microgravity conditions in vitro with minimum alteration to established cell culture techniques. Human respiratory epithelial Calu-3 cell layers were used to model the airway epithelium. Cells grown at an air interface in the diffusion chamber from day 1 or day 5 after seeding on 24-well polyester Transwell cell culture inserts developed a similar transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) to cells cultured in conventional cell culture plates. Confluent Calu-3 layers exposed to modelled microgravity in the 3D-clinostat for up to 48 h maintained their high TER. The permeability of the paracellular marker 14C-mannitol was unaffected after a 24 h rotation of the cell layers in the 3D-clinostat, but was increased 2-fold after 48 h of modelled microgravity. It was demonstrated that the culture/diffusion chamber developed is suitable for culturing epithelial cell layers and, when subjected to rotation in the 3D-clinostat, will be a valuable in vitro system in which to study the influence of microgravity on epithelial permeability and drug transport.  相似文献

This institute conducted a series of meteorological rocket experiments for the upper-atmospheric sounding in the winter of 1979. Within the overlap altitude range with balloon flights, a comparison of the results with the standard radiosonde data indicated that the rocket-borne system was reliable. The measurements from foru rocket flights for the region between 20 and 30 km showed a degree of compatibility to each other while those for above 30 km differed considerably from one another. At low latitude, the temperature profiles in the winter stratosphere in general showed a reasonably good agreement with the U.S. Standard Atmospheric Supplements, 1966 (USSAS 66). A temperature of 2–24°C lower than the USSAS 66, however, was recorded in the lower mesosphere. Above 30 km the maximum diurnal variation in temperature was 9°C or so. In the winter, the wind profile showed the westerlies and the maximum wind velocity of 92.1 Msec?1 was obtained from these experiments at the height of 60 km.  相似文献

Development of a balloon to fly at higher altitudes is one of the most attractive challenges in scientific balloon technologies. After reaching the highest record setting balloon altitude of 53.0 km using the 3.4 μm film in 2002, we tried to make a thinner balloon film. In 2003, we developed a forming die and an air-ring and succeeded in forming a film with a thickness of 3.0 μm and a width of 220 cm. Using this film, we manufactured a balloon with a volume of 5000 m3 and succeeded in flying the balloon up to an altitude of 46.0 km. We then searched for a good combination of resins to make a thinner and wider film and obtained films with widths of 280 cm, and a thickness of 3.0 μm at first, and then 2.8 μm. In 2004, we performed balloon experiments making a 30,000 m3 balloon with the 3.0 μm film and a 5000 m3 balloon with the 2.8 μm film. Both balloons were well manufactured and reached the highest altitudes of 50.7 and 42.6 km, respectively.  相似文献

We present a large area, balloon borne, NaI(Tl) detector for low-energy gamma rays with temporal signature : FIGARO.The main detector is a mosaic of 12 NaI(Tl) tiles 22.5 × 15 × 5 cm, for a total geometric area of 4050 cm2.In the energy band 140 keV - 6 MeV, the expected background counting rate at float altitude is in the range of two to three thousands counts per second. For pulsar analysis the expected 3δ sensitivity for 5 hours exposition time is 2.5 10?4 ph/cm2.s.MeV (150–500 keV) 1.5 10?4 ph/cm2.s.MeV (1–6 MeV). This performance, together with the large effective area and the relatively short duration of a balloon flight, make FIGARO particularly suitable for the identification of sources by means of temporal analysis. For objectives in the Northern sky, including the Crab pulsar, a transmediterranean flight is planned for the summer of 1982 ; a Southern mission is scheduled in Brazil for the fall of 1983 (Vela, PSR 1822-09).  相似文献

The positive ion composition and electron density were measured in the lower ionosphere above Kiruna in salvo A of CAMP (Cold Arctic Mesopause Project). The CAMP/P (S37/P) payload carrying a magnetic ion spectrometer, positive ion and electron probes, and propagation experiments was launched on 3 August 1982 2332 UT during extended Noctilucent Clouds (NLC) and auroral activities over Kiruna. The measured electron density was 5×103cm?3 at 80 km and 2.5×105cm?3 at 90 km. The increase of ion and electron densities in the D- and E-region during twilight was caused by precipitating auroral particles. The height distribution of the positive ions measured by the mass spectrometer in the mass range 19–280 amu is different from a winter flight with similar auroral conditions. Below 85.5 km proton hydrates H+(H2O)3 ? H+(H2O)8 were the dominant ions. The heaviest proton hydrates H+(H2O)7 and H+(H2O)8 were most abundant at 82–85.5 km, the altitude of visible NLC. Above 85.5 km O2+ and NO+ became dominant. A small metal ion layer was observed between 90.5–93 km with a maximum ion density of 10% of the total positive ion density at 91 km altitude. The metal ion density disappeared within about a km below 90.5 km.  相似文献

Sea-anchored balloons are stratospheric super-pressure balloons that are anchored to the sea. The sea-anchored balloon is a simple system that has the capability for long-duration flights, fixed-point observations, flexible launch windows, easy telemetry links to ground stations, and quick recoveries. Such balloons are not required to fly through the jet stream while tethered to the ground or sea, because the tether is deployed from a reel on the balloon after reaching a floating altitude. In this study, the feasibility of the sea-anchored balloon is investigated, with particular emphasis on the tether strength, balloon altitude, and system mass, based on the present technological level of the tether’s specific strength. Although the wind distribution with altitude is a dominant factor for feasibility, a sea-anchored balloon with an altitude of about 25 km would be feasible if the velocity of the jet stream is sufficiently low. The sea-anchored balloon can be simply flight-tested, since additional ground facilities and special flight operations are not necessary.  相似文献

Radio occultation measurements of the temperature structure of the Venus atmosphere have been obtained during seven occultation “seasons” extending from December 1978 to December 1983. Approximately 123 vertical profiles of temperature from about 40 km to about 85 km altitudes have been derived. Since these measurements cover latitudes from both poles to the equator, they have shown the latitudinal dependence of thermal structure. There is a smooth transition from the troposphere to the mesosphere at latitudes below about 45°, with the tropopause at about 56 km. The troposphere then rises to about 62 km in the “collar cloud” region between about 60° and 80° latitude, where a strong temperature inversion (up to 30 K) is present. In the polar areas, 80°–90°, the mesosphere becomes isothermal and there is no inversion. This latitudinal behavior is related to the persistent circulation pattern, in which a predominantly zonal retrograde motion at latitudes below 45° gradually changes to a circumpolar vortex at the “collar cloud” latitudes. Indeed, the radio occultation data have been used in a cyclostrophic balance model to derive zonal winds in the Venus atmosphere, which showed a mid-latitude (50°–55°) jet with a speed of about 120–140 ms?1 at about 70 km altitude /1,2/. The observations obtained in 1983 and 1984 have shown that above the tropopause there is considerable temporal variability in the detailed thermal structure, suggesting that the persistent circulation pattern is subject to weather-like variability.  相似文献

A first ISRO-DFVLR collaborative balloon flight of the MPAE cryogenic sampler was conducted at Hyderabad, India (17.5°N), on March 27 1985, and 15 air samples were collected between 10 and 35 km altitude. Vertical profiles of source gases analysed from these samples, such as CCl3F, CCl2F2, CBrClF2, and CH4 are presented. Due to tropical upwelling, mixing ratios of source gases decrease less rapidly with altitude than at mid-latitudes.  相似文献

This paper describes the results of ongoing technology development activities for a Venus spherical superpressure balloon capable of flying for long durations (30 days) in the middle cloud layer at an altitude of 55.5 km. Data is presented from a successful aerial deployment and inflation flight experiment on a 5.5 m diameter prototype balloon conducted at a 2.5 km altitude above the Earth. Although the balloon in that test was not released for free flight, all other steps in the deployment and inflation process were successfully executed. Experimental and computational results are also presented from an investigation of the stress concentration phenomenon at the junction of the metal end fitting and fabric end cap of the prototype Venus balloon. Good agreement was found between the simulation and experimental results and a stress concentration factor of 1.55 determined for this end cap design compared to the expectations of thin membrane theory. Finally, results are presented for a new, second-generation Venus balloon material utilizing Aclar™ film instead of Teflon. Optical property and sulfuric acid tolerance data are presented for this material based on laboratory testing of samples.  相似文献

The Unmanned Space Vehicle test flights will use a 7 m 1300 kg aircraft. The first three launches will take place at the Italian Space Agency ASI base in Trapani–Milo, Sicily, through a stratospheric balloon that will drop the aircraft at a predefined height. After free fall acceleration to transonic velocities, the parachute deployment will allow a safe splash down in the central Mediterranean Sea. The goal of this article is to show the preliminary analysis results for the first USV flight. We carried out a statistical study for the year 2000–2003, evaluating the typical summer and winter launch windows of the Trapani–Milo base.First, in the center Mediterranean, we define safe recovery areas. They cannot be reached during the balloon ascending phase so, after a sufficiently long floating part able to catch the open sea, the balloon will go down to the release height (24 km). The simulation foresees a 400,000 m3 balloon and 3 valves for the altitude transfer.A safe splash down must occur far enough from the nearest coast: the minimum distance is considered around 25 km. The vehicle should be released at a distance, from the nearest coast, greater than this minimum amount plus the USV model maximum horizontal translation, during its own trajectory from balloon separation to splash down. In this way we define safe release areas for some possible translations.Winter stratospheric winds are less stable. The winter average flight duration is 7 h and it is probably too long for the diurnal recovery requirement and its scheduled procedures.Comparing past stratospheric balloons flights and trajectories computed using measured meteorological data (analysis), with their predictions made using forecast models and soundings, we obtain the standard deviation of the trajectory forecast uncertainty at the balloon–aircraft separation. Two cases are taken into account: predictions made 24 and 6 h before the launch.Assuming a Gaussian latitudinal uncertainty distribution for the prediction 6 h before the launch, we are able to identify the forecast trajectories that have a probability greater than 97% to reach the safe release areas.Simulating the summer windows trajectories for the years from 2000 to 2003 and for the favorable ground wind days, we obtain the number of trajectories with the desired forecast probabilities.  相似文献

The Polar Balloon Atmospheric Composition Experiment (P-BACE) is a new generation of neutral gas mass spectrometer based on the time-of-flight principle. P-BACE is the scientific experiment on the Mars Environment Analog Platform (MEAP) flown successfully on a balloon mission in summer 2008. The MEAP mission was flown with a 334,000 m3 helium balloon in the stratosphere on a semicircular trajectory from northern Sweden around the North Pole to Canada using the summer northern hemispheric wind current. The atmospheric conditions at an atmospheric altitude of 35–40 km are remarkably similar to those on the surface of Mars and thus the balloon mission was an ideal testbed for our mass spectrometer P-BACE. Originally this instrument was designed for in situ measurements of the chemical composition of the Martian atmosphere.P-BACE has a unique mass range from 0 to 1000 amu/q with a mass resolution mm (FWHM) > 1000, and the dynamic range is at least six orders of magnitude. During this experiment, the acquisition of one mass spectrum is a sum of 65,535 single spectra, recorded in a time frame of 66 s.The balloon mission lasted 5 days and had successfully demonstrated the functionality of the P-BACE instrument during flight conditions. We had recorded more than 4500 mass spectra. With little modifications, P-BACE can be used on a planetary mission for Mars, but for example also for Venus or Mercury, if placed on a satellite.  相似文献
