We present a radiative/hydrodynamical mechanism for triggering AGN activity; the intensive radiation from a circumnuclear starburst drives the nuclear fueling due to the Poynting-Robertson (radiation drag) effects. When the starburst is in an early and therefore super-Eddington phase, the radiative flux force is likely to obstruct severely the mass accretion onto the nucleus (radiative blizzard phase). But, in a later sub-Eddington phase, the radiation flux force builds up a wall of dusty gas. The wall absorbs the radiation from the starburst regions and re-emits infrared radiation, which causes the disk accretion due to the Poynting-Robertson effect, consequently leading to nuclear fueling (radiative avalanche phase). The radiative avalanche could link to an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF) onto a putative supermassive black hole. The radiatively triggered nuclear activity diminishes as the starburst dims. In this context, the AGN type could be discriminated not only by the viewing angles but also by the evolution of a circumnuclear starbursts. Based on such a picture, we reconsider the AGN activity in luminous IRAS galaxies.  相似文献

Recent multiwavelength monitoring of active galactic nuclei (AGN), particularly with the IUE satellite, has produced extraordinary advances in our understanding of the energy-generation mechanism(s) in the central engine and of the structure of the surrounding material. Examples discussed here include both ordinary AGN and blazars (the collective name for highly variable, radio-loud AGN like BL Lac objects and Optically Violently Variable quasars). In the last decade, efforts to obtain single-epoch multiwavelength spectra led to fundamentally new models for the structure of AGN, involving accretion disks for AGN and relativistic jets for blazars. Recent extensions of multiwavelength spectroscopy into the temporal domain have shown that while these general pictures may be correct, the details were probably wrong. Campaigns to monitor Seyfert 1 galaxies like NGC 4151, NGC 5548 and Fairall 9 at infrared, optical, ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths indicate that broad-emission line regions are stratified by ionization, density, and velocity; argue against a standard thin accretion disk model; and suggest that X-rays represent primary rather than reprocessed radiation. For blazars, years of radio monitoring indicated emission from an inhomogeneous synchrotron-emitting plasma, which could also produce at least some of the shorter-wavelength emission. The recent month-long campaign to observe the BL Lac object PKS 2155-304 has revealed remarkably rapid variability that extends from the infrared through the X-ray with similar amplitude and little or no discernible lag. This lends strong support to relativistic jet models and rules out the proposed accretion disk model for the ultraviolet-X-ray continuum.  相似文献

The centers of elliptical galaxies host supermassive black holes that significantly affect the surrounding interstellar medium through feedback resulting from the accretion process. The evolution of this gas and of the nuclear emission during the galaxies’ lifetime has been studied recently with high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations. These included gas cooling and heating specific for an average AGN spectral energy distribution, a radiative efficiency declining at low mass accretion rates, and mechanical coupling between the hot gas and AGN winds. Here, we present a short summary of the observational properties resulting from the simulations, focussing on (1) the nuclear luminosity; (2) the global luminosity and temperature of the hot gas; (3) its temperature profile and X-ray brightness profile. These properties are compared with those of galaxies of the local universe, pointing out the successes of the adopted feedback and the needs for new input in the simulations.  相似文献

A model of optically thin, advection-dominated accretion flows (ADAFs) has made rapid progress recently and attracted much attention now. It can nicely reproduce the observed spectra of Sgr A1 and other low-luminosity AGNs. We here review the unique properties of ADAFs, focusing on their emission properties and time-dependent behavior. The issues involved with ADAFs are also discussed.  相似文献

Imaging studies have shown that ∼ 25% of LINER galaxies display a compact nuclear UV source. I compare the HST ultraviolet (1150–3200 Å) spectra that are now available for seven such “UV-bright” LINERs. The spectra of NGC 404, NGC 4569, and NGC 5055 show clear absorption-line signatures of massive stars, indicating a stellar origin for the UV continuum. Similar features are probably present in NGC 6500. The same stellar signatures may be present but undetectable in NGC 4594, due to the low signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum, and in M81 and NGC 4579, due to superposed strong, broad emission lines. The compact central UV continuum source that is observed in these galaxies is a nuclear star cluster rather than a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN), at least in some cases. At least four of the LINERs suffer from an ionizing photon deficit, in the sense that the ionizing photon flux inferred from the observed far-UV continuum is insufficient to drive the optical H I recombination lines. Examination of the nuclear X-ray flux of each galaxy shows a high X-ray UV ratio in the four “UV-photon starved” LINERs. In these four objects, a separate component, emitting predominantly in the extreme-UV, is the likely ionizing agent, and is perhaps unrelated to the observed nuclear UV emission. Future observations can determine whether the UV continuum in LINERs is always dominated by a starburst or, alternatively, that there are two types of UV-bright LINERs: starburst-dominated and AGN-dominated. Interestingly, recent results show that starbursts dominate the nuclear energetics in many Seyfert 2s as well.  相似文献

During 1990–1991 more than two dozens of extragalactic objects were observed by X-ray instruments aboard the Granat satellite. Among them there were AGNs and Seyfert galaxies (NGC4151, NGC5548, MCG-30-15, IC4329 etc.), quasars (3C273, 3C390.3 etc.), radio galaxies (Cen A, M87 etc.) and clusters of galaxies (Virgo, Perseus, Coma etc.). We will discuss below the preliminary results obtained with the ART-P telescope during the observations of five sources: NGC4151, 3C273, Cen A and the galaxies M87 and NGC4388 on the Virgo cluster.  相似文献

New BeppoSAX observations of the nearby prototypical starburst galaxies NGC 253 and M82 are presented. A companion paper (Cappi et al. 1998) shows that the hard (2–10 keV) spectrum of both galaxies, extracted from the source central regions, is best described by a thermal emission model with kT ∼ 6–9 keV and abundances ∼ 0.1-0.3 solar. The spatial analysis yields clear evidence that this emission is extended in NGC 253, and possibly also in M82. This quite clearly rules out a LLAGN as the main responsible for their hard X-ray emission. Significant contribution from point-sources (i.e. X-ray binaries (XRBs) and Supernovae Remnants (SNRs)) cannot be excluded; neither can we at present reliably estimate the level of Compton emission. However, we argue that such contributions shouldn't affect our main conclusion, i.e., that the BeppoSAX results show, altogether, compelling evidence for the existence of a very hot, metal-poor interstellar plasma in both galaxies.  相似文献

During the last few years quite some progress has been achieved in the field of low and medium energy gamma-ray astronomy below about 30 MeV. Gamma rays from the galactic center and anti-center region have been detected, which require a high interstellar electron flux in the 100 MeV range, if they are predominantly diffuse in nature. Though the Crab pulsar and its nebula are still the only galactic gamma-ray sources which definitely have been detected, some recently determined upper limits to the gamma-ray fluxes of other radio pulsars are close to the theoretically expected values. Active galaxies seem to have a maximum of luminosity in the range between several 100 keV and a few MeV and, therefore, are of special interest. First observational results have been reported on the Seyfert galaxies NGC 4151 and MCG 8-11-11, and the radio galaxy CenA. The nature of the diffuse cosmic gamma-ray component at low gamma-ray energies is not yet solved. Unresolved active galaxies are good candidates for its origin.Considering the present status of gamma ray astronomy the study of galactic sources like radio pulsars and the unidentified high energy gamma-ray sources, the Milky Way as a whole, active galaxies and the diffuse cosmic sky seem to be the prime targets for broad band observations below 30 MeV in the GRO area. An unexplored field like that of low energy gamma-ray astronomy, however, is always open for surprises.  相似文献

First results of pointed and All Sky Survey observations of galaxies with the X-ray observatory satellite ROSAT are reported. During observations of the Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda galaxy new super-soft X-ray sources have been detected. This new class of luminous X-ray sources may help to solve the millisecond pulsar progenitor problem. Due to the improved sensitivity and longer observation times of ROSAT new X-ray point sources have been resolved in several nearby galaxies. The diffuse emission of the LMC that was already reported by EINSTEIN has been mapped in detail. It shows a lot of fine structure and temperatures around 5 × 106 K. The improved low energy response of ROSAT led to the discovery of 106 K gas from the spiral galaxy M101 and the halo of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. No diffuse emission was detected from the halo of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907.  相似文献

We present results from ROSAT observations of NGC 1808 and NGC 2903. Exposures of 10 ksec each with the PSPC detector show X-ray sources at the central positions of both galaxies which are classified as nuclear starburst galaxies. Both targets, NGC 1808 and NGC 2903 appear slightly extended in X-ray maps in the energy band 0.1–2.4 keV. The X-ray spectrum of NGC 1808 shows almost complete absorption below 0.5 keV, indicating an extremely high hydrogen column density towards that source (NH ≈ 8 × 1021cm−2 resulting from model fits on the PSPC spectrum). In case of NGC 2903, the number of counts in the ROSAT band is significantly lower than expected from a previous EINSTEIN investigation of the source.  相似文献

We present six ROSAT PSPC observations of Seyfert 1 galaxies chosen to have low Galactic line-of-sight absorption (NH 1020 cm−2). As expected, it is found that all of these sources possess significantly steeper spectra below 1 keV, than that observed at higher X-ray energies. In addition we find evidence for soft X-ray spectral features, which are best parameterized as line emission at 0.63 keV in NGC7469 and 0.75 keV in ESO198-G24. We examine these results in the light of the accuracy of the PSPC spectral calibration.  相似文献

The unusual core-collapse supernova 1986J, in the nearby spiral NGC 891, is the first modern supernova in which evidence of a compact remnant of the supernova has been seen. This evidence comes from recent VLBI images, which show the emergence of a new radio component in the center of the expanding radio shell. The new component shows an inverted radio spectrum contrasting with that of the shell. The new component is likely radio emission associated with the black-hole or neutron star compact remnant of the explosion, which would mark the first direct observational link between a modern supernova and such a compact remnant. We report here on our recent VLBI images at 22 and 5 GHz, as well as on our monitoring of the integrated radio spectrum of SN 1986J. In the 22 GHz image, the central component is marginally resolved.  相似文献

Many nearby galaxies contain optical signatures of nuclear activity in the form of LINER nuclei. LINERs may be the weakest and most common manifestation of the quasar phenomenon. The physical origin of this class of objects, however, has been ambiguous. I draw upon a number of recent observations to argue that a significant fraction of LINERs are low-luminosity active galactic nuclei. The evidence in favor of this interpretation includes the similarity in the properties of the host galaxies of LINERs and Seyferts, the detection of broad-line regions, the detection of black holes in a handful of nearby galaxies that are spectroscopically recognized as LINERs, the presence of a compact nuclear source seen in the radio, ultraviolet, and X-rays, and the detection of nonthermal spectra in the hard X-ray band. The spectral energy distributions of LINERs differ dramatically from those of luminous AGNs, most notably in the absence of the “big blue bump.” This and other characteristics suggest that the central engine in LINERs is fed by a very low accretion rate.  相似文献

Based on the spectrophotometric data, by decomposition of the observed continuum, the power - law continuum characteristics of the central source are obtained. The behaviour of both electron temperature Te and density ne in the Narrow - Line Region (NLR) of NGC 7469 is discussed on the thermal and ionization equilibria calculations. Te in NLR of the Sy1 galaxies are higher than the Sy2 ones, and the possible explanation is the lack of the dense (ne 1010 cm−3) zone close to the central source in the Sy2 galaxies.  相似文献

Long (>100 ks) observations of the bright Seyfert galaxies Mrk 766 and NGC 4051 have been obtained using XMM-Newton. The RGS 5–38 Å spectra reveal evidence of broad features. These can be modelled with relativistic emission lines coming from the immediate vicinity of a massive rotating black hole. Lines of OVIII, NVII and CVI are required to reproduce the spectrum of Mrk 766, whereas the spectrum of NGC 4051 can be modelled using a single, even broader OVIII line. Both Seyferts also exhibit broad iron line emission in the 2–8 keV range, and the data available thus far suggest that the strength of the low-energy emission lines and the strength of the iron line may be correlated.  相似文献

We have found compact, near-nuclear X-ray sources in 21 (54%) of a complete sample of 39 nearby face-on spiral and elliptical galaxies with available ROSAT HRI data. ROSAT X-ray luminosities (0.2 – 2.4 keV) of these compact X-ray sources are ∼1037 – 1040 erg s−1. The mean displacement between the location of the compact X-ray source and the optical photometric center of the galaxy is ∼390 pc. ASCA spectra of six of the 21 galaxies show the presence of a hard component with relatively steep (Γ ≈ 2.5) spectral slope. A multicolor disk blackbody plus power-law model fits the data from the spiral galaxies well, suggesting that the X-ray objects in these galaxies may be similar to a black hole candidate (BHC) in its soft (high) state. ASCA data from the elliptical galaxies indicate that hot (kT ≈ 0.7 keV) gas dominates the emission. The fact that the spectral slope of the spiral galaxy sources is steeper than in normal type 1 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and that relatively low absorbing columns (NH ≈ 1021 cm−2) were found to the power-law component indicates that these objects are somehow geometrically and/or physically different from AGNs in normal active galaxies. The X-ray sources in the spiral galaxies may be BHCs, low-luminosity AGNs, or possibly X-ray luminous supernovae. We estimate the black hole masses of the X-ray sources in the spiral galaxies (if they are BHCs or AGNs) to be ∼102–103 M. The X-ray sources in the elliptical galaxies may be BHCs, AGNs or young X-ray supernova also.  相似文献

Elliptical galaxies exhibit a continuum of behaviour between ‘normal’ and highly active objects, with no clear dividing line between the two classes. High-resolution radio observations show that many bright ellipticals contain parsec-scale radio cores which are qualitatively similar to the central engines of radio galaxies but up to a million times less powerful. In contrast, the radio cores of spiral galaxies are qualitatively different from those in ellipticals, providing some clues to why radio galaxies are always ellipticals rather than spirals.  相似文献

We discuss the elemental composition in the hot ISM of elliptical galaxies derived from new and recent X-ray spectral analysis in the context of new phenomenological models of their chemical evolution. Star formation histories, the IMF, the astrophysics of supernovae, and the nature of galactic winds impact the metal content and relative abundances in the hot ISM. We evaluate how X-ray spectroscopy may be utilized to deconstruct how elliptical galaxies, and the stellar populations that compose them, form and evolve, with an emphasis on present and future high resolution spectroscopic analysis.  相似文献

We investigate the velocity distribution of elliptical galaxies in the framework of Non-local Gravity. According to this approach, it is possible to recover the fundamental plane of elliptical galaxies without the dark matter hypothesis. Specifically, we compare theoretical predictions for circular velocity in Non-local Gravity context with the corresponding values coming from a large sample of observed elliptical galaxies. We adopt the surface brightness, effective radius and velocity dispersion as structural parameters for the fundamental plane. As final result, it is possible to show that non-local gravity effects can reproduce the stellar dynamics in elliptical galaxies and fit consistently observational data.  相似文献

Relativistic jets are a common property of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). Understanding jet physical properties is an essential precursor to understanding the mechanisms of energy transport, and ultimately, how energy is extracted from the central black hole. In this paper, I highlight recent developments from Chandra and HST observations of kpc-scale jets in AGN, with particular emphasis on our survey of 17 radio jets in a sample of FRII radio galaxies. These observations show that (1) X-ray and optical emission is common from kpc-scale jets, (2) a large fraction of the bolometric luminosity is emitted at X-rays, and (3) in most sources, a candidate emission process for the X-rays is inverse Compton scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background off the relativistic electrons in the jet. If the latter scenario holds, the implication is that jets are still relativistic on kpc scales.  相似文献
