A multidisciplinary study of this solar-interplanetary event is summarized by two main points: this flare was an incident in a process that began days before the flare, and continued after the flare; and the chain of events can be interpreted most simply in terms of energy input over scales of time and space that are large compared to the flare seen in the light of Hα. In support of these points, 5 aspects of the flare are described here: (1) hours before the flare, slow changes in coronal structure were associated with radio continuum emission, suggesting large-scale magnetic-field changes and the presence of energetic electrons; (2) long-lived X-ray loops require sustained energy input for at least an hour after the flare start; (3) interplanetary disturbance near earth is probably related to this limb flare, although the (expected) absence of a shock makes identification uncertain; (4) the coronal mass ejection overlay decaying magnetic field; (5) speed derived from frequency drift of the type II radio burst in the low corona, and from the travel time of the disturbance to 1 a.u., are about twice as great as the observed speed of the coronal mass ejection and of the disturbed solar-wind speed.

We extend the empirical coronal mass ejection (CME) arrival model of Gopalswamy et al. [Gopalswamy, N. et al. Predicting the 1-AU arrival times of coronal mass ejections, J. Geophys. Res. 106, 29207, 2001] to predict the 1-AU arrival of interplanetary (IP) shocks. A set of 29 IP shocks and the associated magnetic clouds observed by the Wind spacecraft are used for this study. The primary input to this empirical shock arrival model is the initial speed of white-light CMEs obtained using coronagraphs. We use the gas dynamic piston–shock relationship to derive the ESA model which provides a simple means of obtaining the 1-AU speed and arrival times of interplanetary shocks using CME speeds.

X-ray observations show that at a time consistent with a coronal mass ejection onset there is a small, soft X-ray burst (precursor). Generally this is followed some 20–30m later by a more significant flare. At the onset time there is frequently simultaneous activity from widely separated points on the Sun (>105km). We present a model which accounts for the relationship between the coronal mass ejection and the precursor using 102–103 keV protons as the energy transfer agent. The protons (1) heat the high coronal loop. Inferred from the simultaneous activity, destabilizing the pressure balance to produce the ejection and (2) are guided by the magnetic field to below the transition region where they heat the chromospheric plasma to produce the precursor X-rays. High correlation between these events and a subsequent flare suggests that there may be a feedback mechanism operating from the coronal mass ejection.

This paper examines a possible mechanism for the initiation of coronal mass ejections by means of the eruption of magnetic flux beneath a closed magnetic structure analogous to a coronal helmet structure. Anumerical computation shows that such an eruption deforms the helmet structure into an expanding bright "loop", followed by a dark cavity due to the expansion of the erupted magnetic field. The morphology and the internal structure of the loop are mainly determined by the background magnetic field whereas its ejective speed is largely controlled by the rate of flux ejection. The present model identifies the loop-like mass ejections with the above plasma structures moving with the frozen-in magnetic field and it may well explain some general properties of such ejections.

Observed galactic cosmic ray intensity can be subjected to a transient decrease. These so-called Forbush decreases are driven by coronal mass ejection induced shockwaves in the heliosphere. By combining in situ measurements by space borne instruments with ground-based cosmic ray observations, we investigate the relationship between solar energetic particle flux, various solar activity indices, and intensity measurements of cosmic rays during such an event. We present cross-correlation study done using proton flux data from the SOHO/ERNE instrument, as well as data collected during some of the strongest Forbush decreases over the last two completed solar cycles by the network of neutron monitor detectors and different solar observatories. We have demonstrated connection between the shape of solar energetic particles fluence spectra and selected coronal mass ejection and Forbush decrease parameters, indicating that power exponents used to model these fluence spectra could be valuable new parameters in similar analysis of mentioned phenomena. They appear to be better predictor variables of Forbush decrease magnitude in interplanetary magnetic field than coronal mass ejection velocities.

We investigate the acceleration of charged particles in a time-dependent chaotic magnetic field in this work. In earlier works, it has been demonstrated that in an asymmetric wire-loop current systems (WLCSs), the magnetic field is of chaotic in nature. Furthermore, observations also showed that there exist time-varying current loops and current filaments in solar corona. It is therefore natural to conceive that the magnetic field on the solar surface is chaotic and time-dependent. Here, we develop a numerical model to study the acceleration process of charged particles in a time-varying chaotic magnetic field that is generated by an ensemble of 8 WLCSs. We found that the motion of energetic particles in the system is of diffusive in nature and a power law spectrum can quickly develop. The mechanism examined here may serve as an efficient pre-acceleration mechanism that generates the so-called seed particles for diffusive shock acceleration at a coronal mass ejection (CME) driven shock in large solar energetic particle (SEP) events.

The active region, AR#9393, produced a number of intense flares during March–April 2001. In this paper, we report the analysis of an X1.1 flare event of April 2, 2001 and its associated coronal mass ejection. The timing and location of the Hα eruption, radio burst activities, and the onset of mass ejection suggest an energy release that occurred close to the surface of the sun. At this region, as shown by the magnetogram, X-ray and EUV images, the field configuration was complex and the 3-D extrapolation revealed the presence of a magnetic null point. Results also suggest that the energy release is followed by the magnetic reconnection between the low-lying loops near the separator point and outlying loops. This study provides the support for the magnetic break-out process to trigger the energy release in eruptive flare event.

Shock waves, as evidenced by type II radio bursts, often accompany flares and coronal mass ejection transients. At present, the density enhancements observed by coronagraphs are believed by some to be ejected matter from the low corona, and by others to be the compressed material behind a shock front. If the former is correct, one would expect in some cases to see a density enhancement, associated with the compression region of the shock, some distance ahead of the transient ejecta. Such a density enhancement has not been previously reported. The coronal transient of 1980 June 29 (0233 UT) was observed with the High Altitude Observatory's Coronagraph/Polarimeter aboard SMM. This flare-associated coronal transient event was well observed with the Culgoora Radioheliograph, including a well-developed type II burst. Visible on the coronagraph images is a faint circular arc moving out well ahead of the transient loops. This arc is moving at more than 900 km s?1 while the transient itself is moving at a speed of about 600 km s?1. Both the arc and transient appear to have originated either prior to the X-ray flare or at some height above the flare at the time of the flare. The type II burst observed at Culgoora is associated with the transient loops, and no type II emission is identified with the faint arc.Due to its great speed, we interpret the faint arc as a manifestation of a shock wave, but also envision a separate shock wave associated with the transient loops as evidenced by the type II emission. Preliminary density measurements are consistent with this interpretation, and show the outer shock wave associated with the faint arc to have a Mach number MA ≤ 1.7. At present we have no convincing explanation for the lack of a type II burst in association with the arc. This work was supported in part by NASA through grants NSG-7287 and NAGW-91 to the University of Colorado, Boulder, and S-55989 to the High Altitude Observatory, National Center for Atmospheric Research. From a combined analysis of radioheliographic observations and white light images of the Corona, it is shown that metric continua onsets or enhancements are associated with a great variety of dynamical changes of the Corona. It is found that if the most spectacular radio bursts (type IV) are associated with mass ejection transients, the more common noise storm onsets or enhancements are systematically associated with coronal changes which are not necessarly mass ejections.Simultaneous observations of Radio type III bursts and Hα mass ejecta are related. We are looking to the signature at low levels in the corona of the electron beam acceleration triggering type III bursts. The results deal with the relationship between the type III occurrence and optical features : the presence of velocities in Hα, the shape of Hα line which reveals trubulent motions and the probable existence of a shock wave.

In the present work we analyse the magnetic cloud (MC) at 1 AU on 9 November 1997. The appearance of a hotter and dense part (dense filament), with radial extent 106 km, immediately behind the frontal part of the MC, is a distinctive feature of the event. The INTERBALL - Aurora] Probe had a chance to observe field-aligned currents in the mid - altitude magnetosphere during the substorm expansion phase intensification related to the dense filament. We emphasise the appearance of unusual “N”- shape magnetic structure, duration 3 min, amplitude 50 nT between field-aligned current region 1 and the magnetosphere lobe in the late evening hours. To explain some of the MC features we refer to a model scenario of the 6 November 1997 coronal mass ejection.

The solar wind wave heating models require substantial amount of wave power in order to efficiently heat and accelerate solar wind. The level of fluctuations is however limited by energetic particle observations. The simplest cyclotron sweep models result in convection-dominated transport, contradicting observations. However, models incorporating wave-wave -interactions, which cause wave energy to cascade in wavenumber, allow more reasonable energetic particle transport in the interplanetary space. The mean free path of the energetic particles remains still relatively short in the corona, providing favorable conditions for coronal mass ejection (CME) related shock acceleration. We study the consequences of this scenario on the energetic particle production related to CMEs. The role of self-generated waves is also discussed.

There is increasing evidence suggesting that coronal acceleration supplies at least part of the particles observed during solar energetic particle events, yet coronal processes tend to be mostly disregarded in these studies. This is often due to the fact that the coronal restructuring in the early development of the associated flare and/or coronal mass ejection event is extremely fast (on the order of a few minutes) and can encompass most of the solar disk, thus requiring a full disk solar imager with very high time-cadence, and wide spectral coverage. An important subset of the energetic particle events are the near-relativistic impulsive electron events detected near Earth: their onsets can be traced back to a release time in the low corona with accuracies on the order of a couple of minutes. We investigate a series of impulsive electron events from 1998 to 2001 using energetic electron data measured in situ by the Electron, Proton, and Alpha Monitor (EPAM) experiment on the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, and radio coronal observations from the Nanqay Radioheliograph, the Decametric Array from Nanqay and the WAVES experiment on the WIND spacecraft. EPAM measures electrons in the energy range from 40 to 300 keV over a wide range of look directions and with better than 1 minute time resolution, while the Nançay radioheliograph provides images of the solar corona at 5 different frequencies with time cadence of 8 images per second and per frequency. This study focuses on the events which correspond to a delay, between the inferred injection times of the electrons at the Sun, and the electromagnetic emissions from flares, of at least 5 minutes. Radio signatures are found near the estimated time of the electron release for each of the events. The timing and spectral characteristics of the radio emissions, when compared with the properties of the particles seen at EPAM, strongly support an acceleration process in the corona but at highly variable heights from one event to the other.

During extreme solar events such as big flares or/and energetic coronal mass ejections (CMEs) high energy particles are accelerated by the shocks formed in front of fast interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs). The ICMEs (and their sheaths) also give rise to large geomagnetic storms which have significant effects on the Earth’s environment and human life. Around 14 solar cosmic ray ground level enhancement (GLE) events in solar cycle 23 we examined the cosmic ray variation, solar wind speed, ions density, interplanetary magnetic field, and geomagnetic disturbance storm time index (Dst). We found that all but one of GLEs are always followed by a geomagnetic storm with Dst  −50 nT within 1–5 days later. Most(10/14) geomagnetic storms have Dst index  −100  nT therefore generally belong to strong geomagnetic storms. This suggests that GLE event prediction of geomagnetic storms is 93% for moderate storms and 71% for large storms when geomagnetic storms preceded by GLEs. All Dst depressions are associated with cosmic ray decreases which occur nearly simultaneously with geomagnetic storms. We also investigated the interplanetary plasma features. Most geomagnetic storm correspond significant periods of southward Bz and in close to 80% of the cases that the Bz was first northward then turning southward after storm sudden commencement (SSC). Plasma flow speed, ion number density and interplanetary plasma temperature near 1 AU also have a peak at interplanetary shock arrival. Solar cause and energetic particle signatures of large geomagnetic storms and a possible prediction scheme are discussed.

This study performs simulations of interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) propagation in a realistic three-dimensional (3D) solar wind structure from the Sun to the Earth by using the newly developed hybrid code, HAFv.2+3DMHD. This model combines two simulation codes, Hakamada–Akasofu–Fry code version 2 (HAFv.2) and a fully 3D, time-dependent MHD simulation code. The solar wind structure is simulated out to 0.08 AU (18 Rs) from source surface maps using the HAFv.2 code. The outputs at 0.08 AU are then used to provide inputs for the lower boundary, at that location, of the 3D MHD code to calculate solar wind and its evolution to 1 AU and beyond. A dynamic disturbance, mimicking a particular flare’s energy output, is delivered to this non-uniform structure to model the evolution and interplanetary propagation of ICMEs (including their shocks). We then show the interaction between two ICMEs and the dynamic process during the overtaking of one shock by the other. The results show that both CMEs and heliosphere current sheet/plasma sheet were deformed by interacting with each other.
