WARLOC: A High-Power Coherent 94 GHz Radar

This paper describes the development of a high-power, coherent radar system at W-band and discusses potential applications of radars with this new capability. Previous radars in this frequency band were limited by available power-amplifier technology to about 500 W of average power; WARLOC radar represents an increase in power, by 20 times, over previous coherent radars at 94 GHz. This performance improvement is possible due to the development of a gyroklystron amplifier specifically for this and future radars in this frequency band. The gyroklystron amplifier tubes deliver 100 kW peak power and 10 kW of average power at a center frequency of approximately 94 GHz. Other novel features of this radar include the use of highly overmoded waveguides and rotary joints for the transmission of power from the final power amplifier (FPA) to the antenna, and a high-power quasi-optical duplexer. The system uses a relatively large 1.8 m diameter (580-wavelength) Cassegrain antenna, which required the development of an antenna with an rms surface accuracy of 0.0025 in, to obtain long-range detection and identification of small objects. Test data show an antenna gain of 62.5 dB, confirming that the needed surface accuracy was achieved. Two mobile shelters house the radar system, permitting relocation to various test sites. WARLOC is presently operational at the Naval Research Laboratory's Chesapeake Bay Detachment facility, Maryland. It is being employed in radar imaging of airborne and surface objects, and in the scientific study of propagation effects and atmospheric physics phenomena.

AUTOTESTCON '96, jointly sponsored by AESS and the Instrumentation and Measurement Society (I&MS), was held September 16-19 in Dayton, OH, the birthplace of aviation. As the largest test conference, it provides a valuable forum for the exchange of information relating to automatic test systems (ATS). The conference has continued to grow both in attendance and in exhibition space. This year's conference emphasized improving test system effectiveness in the presence of exploding computer technology and the changing military and commercial environment. The impact of DoD acquisition reform on test was also examined

Engineering and Electrical Engineering?Supply and Demand

Change in employment of engineers is shown to be related to the Deutsch and Shea Index of Engineering Demand. A relationship is given that shows the changes in engineering employment on a quarterly and annual basis. Engineering employment has turned upward for the first time since the last quarter of 1969. We have displaced and stored over 90 000 qualified engineers since 1969, in addition to displacing over 40 000 not qualified by an engineering education. Estimates by some of the need for 48 000 engineers per year is shown to be highly questionable. Current demand is still insufficient to absorb the current output without displacing some currently employed. It is suggested that demand in specialties can be determined by advertising lineage devoted to specialties in the same manner that the engineering demand is determined by the Deutsch and Shea Index. The years 1970, 1971, and 1972 were characterized by a decrease in employment of 62 000 engineers, 150 000 new graduates, 25 000 immigrants, and only 55 000 normal retirements and deaths.

针对国家发展大飞机重大专项以及提高自主创新能力的需求,概述了我国航空工程教育的发展及人才培养情况,指出了我国航空工程师培养面临的问题。分析了国际上一些航空工业强国的航空工程师教育模式和实践,总结了北京航空航天大学、西北工业大学等高校航空工程师培养模式的改革,突出了国际化和创新性培养的探索。提出了针对我国目前高等航空工程教育人才培养的目标定位、机制模式和方案体系的建议。     

快速凝固Al94Ti4C2合金的显微组织和相结构分析

 研究了快速凝固 Al94Ti4C2 (at% )合金的显微组织和相结构特征。常规金属型铸态组织由分布于 α-Al基体中的片状 Al3Ti和以团簇形式存在的尺寸为 0 .3～ 1 μm的 Ti5C4 颗粒组成。经快速凝固以后 ,Ti5C4 分散为 2 0～ 40 nm的颗粒 ,接近连续地排列于α-Al晶粒边界 ;而 Al3Ti的形成受到抑制并为一有序 LI2 结构的亚稳相 (～ Al4 Ti)所替代 ,该相的晶格常数为 a0 ≈ 0 .40 4 nm,呈单个颗粒分居于每个 α-Al晶粒内 ,同 α-Al之间保持完全共格关系。以此为基础 ,对凝固过程特别是 Ti5C4 形成机制进行了分析和探讨     

Formulation of discovery-class mission concepts

A key feature of the NASA discovery programs is the strategy of allowing a single scientist with a "good idea" to form his/her own team of scientists and engineers to generate a concept which is credible and attractive to a complete body of independent peers. The principle investigator (PI) must accept responsibility for all aspects of the mission. A wide variety of mission types have been found to fit the discovery mold, including fly-bys, orbiters, landers and even sample return missions. To enhance this fit, it has been necessary for scientists and engineers to work closely in: evaluating spacecraft risks, setting data throughput requirements and methods of their amelioration, focusing on key objectives, and deriving strict instrument and experiment requirements from overall goals and engineering realities. Discovery is loaded with challenges, but likewise, represents the most promising opportunities for affordable, frequent scientific advances in planetary exploration.     

CAD模型质量及标准的快速检查关键技术研究

针对实际应用中如何控制CAD模型标准以提高产品设计制造质量的问题,研究提出了基于任务角色的结构框架思想,并完成与CAD平台无关的中性检查规则模型的建立,通过平台映射机制映射到具体CAD平台,开发出具有权限合理和符合中国工程设计人员使用习惯的CAD模型质量和标准检查系统。同时针对UGNX平台开发了检查系统,通过实例验证了思想方法的有效性和检查系统的实用性。     

一种嵌入式软件覆盖和分析测试方法

如何进行嵌入式软件的覆盖测试和性能测试,是嵌入式软件测试工程师较为关心的热点问题之一。介绍了一种基于PowerPc755目标板的嵌入式软件覆盖和分析测试方法。方法借助于嵌入式软件测试工具TestBed和实时硬件数据采集工具RTInsight,搭建了嵌入式软件动态测试平台,并在该嵌入式软件动态测试平台上进行了覆盖测试和性能测试,同时给出了相关的覆盖率测试和时间性能测试的测试结果。

It is argued that knowledge workers, and engineers in particular, constitute one of society's more indispensable human resources in this technological era. The environment in which engineers work is examined, both on the job and in society as a whole, with particular regard to the relatively poor status that engineering has. It is suggested that this will improve only when engineers become involved in an effort to make desirable changes

Nonelectronic Parts Reliability Philosophy

Prepared specifically for those engineers having responsibility for the design, evaluation, or application of mechanical or electromechanical parts and components, the state-of-the-art in nonelectronic component reliability is examined from the viewpoint of history, ancient and modern. A technique is presented to measure the relative overall effect of failure of nonelectronic components in so-called electronic systems. Failure data from the 413L system are analyzed to reveal significant failure modes and mechanisms which are of value in designing for, or assessing the reliability of, a specific component. An overall ?Figure of Hazard? for failure mechanisms is presented.     

The Development of Systems Engineering

Systems engineering is described as the design of the whole as distinguished from the design of the parts. Systems engineers create the architecture of the system, define the criteria for its evaluation, and perform tradeoff studies for optimization of the subsystem characteristics. In addition to their own brains, the principal tool of systems engineers is the computer. Systems engineering has evolved during a long series of major developments, in particular the intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) program. The major growth of systems engineering is expected to be in the improvement of its tools and in the enlargement of the range of problems to which it is applied.

Energy-efficient intensifiers of laminar heat transfer

In this paper, calculations of some thermo-hydraulic parameters of different intensified channels have been carried out and a grooved channel that is optimal in mass and energy expenditure is determined. A new variant of the intensified channel is proposed and recommendations for engineers are presented.

In this paper the author looks at the pros and cons of each employment option, and pose several questions that engineers should consider as they plan their careers. Personal positioning is a key element of an engineer's career. In today's rapidly evolving workplace your career may take several different directions. Employment options are increasing and varying. Options include direct, contract consulting, and self-employment. This paper addresses each of these options and provides one with a series of questions that one should consider before exercising any of these options. The options of working for small companies versus large companies and the management track versus the technical track are also considered
