Magnetospheric ions, solar wind ions, and locally produced pick-up ions can impact the atmospheres of objects in the solar system, transferring energy by collisions with atmospheric atoms and molecules. This can result in an expansion of the atmospheric corona with a fraction of the energetic atoms or molecules being lost (sputtered) from the atmosphere. The expanded corona presents a larger target to the incident plasma, which in turn enhances pick-up ion formation and collisional ejection. In this manner a significant flux of atoms or molecules can be lost from an atmosphere, affecting its long-term evolution. This has been shown to be an important process for the dynamics and evolution of the atmosphere of lo, which is bombarded by the Jovian magnetospheric plasma, and for loss of atmosphere from Titan. Sputtering by pick-up ion bombardment has been shown to remove material from the atmosphere of Mars affecting the observed isotope ratios, and energetic O+ precipitation affects the Earth's thermosphere. The physics of ion bombardment of a gas which leads to atmospheric sputtering is described here. Analytic expressions derived from transport equations are shown to be useful for estimating the sputtering rate. These are compared to results from transport and Monte-Carlo calculations.  相似文献

We use a simplified atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM) to investigate the response of the lower atmosphere to thermal perturbations in the lower stratosphere. The results show that generic heating of the lower stratosphere tends to weaken the sub-tropical jets and the tropospheric mean meridional circulations. The positions of the jets, and the extent of the Hadley cells, respond to the distribution of the stratospheric heating, with low latitude heating displacing them poleward, and uniform heating displacing them equatorward. The patterns of response to the low latitude heating are similar to those found to be associated with solar variability in previous observational data analysis, and to the effects of varying solar UV radiation in sophisticated AGCMs. In order to investigate the chain of causality involved in converting the stratospheric thermal forcing to a tropospheric climate signal we conduct an experiment which uses an ensemble of model spin-ups to analyse the time development of the response to an applied stratospheric perturbation. We find that the initial effect of the change in static stability at the tropopause is to reduce the eddy momentum flux convergence in this region. This is followed by a vertical transfer of the momentum forcing anomaly by an anomalous mean circulation to the surface, where it is partly balanced by surface stress anomalies. The unbalanced part drives the evolution of the vertically integrated zonal flow. We conclude that solar heating of the stratosphere may produce changes in the circulation of the troposphere even without any direct forcing below the tropopause. We suggest that the impact of the stratospheric changes on wave propagation is key to the mechanisms involved.  相似文献

A review of the theoretical problems associated with preflare magnetic energy storage and conversion is presented. The review consists of three parts; preflare magnetic energy storage, magnetic energy conversion mechanisms, and preflare triggers. In Section 2, the relationship between magnetic energy storage and the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere is developed. By accounting for the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere, we are able to examine the fundamental problems associated with the concept of in situ versus remote magnetic-energy storage. Furthermore, this approach permits us to distinguish between the roles of local and global parameters in the storage process.Section 3 is focused on the conversion mechanisms that can explain, in principle, the rapid energy release of a flare. In addition, we discuss how electrodynamic coupling eventually dictates which mechanism(s) is responsible for releasing the stored magnetic energy, and how the global coupling dictates the final evolution of the relevant mechanism. Section 4 examines preflare triggers and Section 5, we examine the most promising directions for future research into the problem of magnetic-energy storage and conversion of the Sun.  相似文献

The possibility of remote diagnostics of coronal structures with impulsively-generated short-period fast magnetoacoustic wave trains is demonstrated. An initially broad-band, aperiodic fast magnetoacoustic perturbation guided by a 1D plasma inhomogeneity develops into a quasi-periodic wave train with a well-pronounced frequency and amplitude modulation. The quasi-periodicity results from the geometrical dispersion of the modes, determined by the transverse profile of the loop, and hence contains information about the profile. Wavelet images of the wave train demonstrate that their typical spectral signature is of a “crazy tadpole’’ shape: a narrow spectrum tail precedes a broad-band head. The instantaneous period of the oscillations in the wave train decreases gradually with time, with a mean value of several seconds for typical coronal values. The period and the spectral amplitude evolution are determined by the steepness of the transverse density profile and the density contrast ratio in the loop, which offers a tool for estimation of the sub-resolution structuring of the corona.  相似文献

We briefly review some questions of extragalactic astrophysics and cosmology that would most benefit from future missions outside the Earth's atmosphere in the IR and submillimeter. These include the formation and early evolution phases in galaxies and the probably related question of quasar formation; the observation of Active Galactic Nuclei embedded in thick dusty structures (torii) and its impact on the still debated unified model of AGN activity; the observability of radiation processes occurring at very highz through background measurements; the investigation of the large scale structure and velocity field in the distant universe; and studies of the interstellar medium in galaxies. Some more emphasis is given on the galaxy formation problem, because we believe that IR-mm sensitive observations will be crucial to its final solution.  相似文献

In this review, an overview of the recent history of stochastic differential equations (SDEs) in application to particle transport problems in space physics and astrophysics is given. The aim is to present a helpful working guide to the literature and at the same time introduce key principles of the SDE approach via “toy models”. Using these examples, we hope to provide an easy way for newcomers to the field to use such methods in their own research. Aspects covered are the solar modulation of cosmic rays, diffusive shock acceleration, galactic cosmic ray propagation and solar energetic particle transport. We believe that the SDE method, due to its simplicity and computational efficiency on modern computer architectures, will be of significant relevance in energetic particle studies in the years to come.  相似文献

In this article we have discussed reasons both of solar and of interstellar origin giving rise to a pronounced three-dimensional structure of the expanding solar wind and thus of the global configuration of the heliosphere. Our present observational knowledge on these structurings is reviewed, and all attempts to theoretically model these solar wind structures are critically analysed with respect to their virtues and flaws. It is especially studied here by what mechanisms interstellar imprints on the actual type of solar wind expansion can be envisaged. With concern to this aspect it hereby appears to be of eminent importance that the solar system maintains a relative motion with a submagnetosonic velocity of about 23km/sec with respect to the ambient magnetized interstellar medium corresponding to a magnetosonic Mach number of about 0.5.A heliopause closing the distant heliospheric cavity within a solar distance of about 100AU on the upwind side and opening it into an largely extended tail on the downwind side results as a first consequence from this relative motion. As a second consequence an asymmetric heliospheric shockfront with upwind distances smaller than downwind distances by ratios between 1/3 and 2/3 is most likely provoked which gives rise to at least two important upwind-downwind asymmetric processes influencing the supersonic solar wind expansion downstream from the shock: the anomalous cosmic ray diffusion into the solar wind, and high energetic jet electrons originating at the shock and moving inwards up to an inner critical point at around 20AU. As we shall demonstrate both processes are influencing the solar wind expansion beyond 20AU, however, more efficiently in the upwind hemisphere as compared to the downwind hemisphere. In the region inside 20AU other mechanisms are operating to propagate the interstellar imprint on the solar wind expansion further downstream into the inner heliosphere because here even the original solar wind electrons, in view of the solar wind bulk velocities, behave as a subsonic plasma constituent which can modify the solar wind solutions by means of an appropriate detuning of the circumsolar electric polarisation field. We give quantitative estimates for these effects. What concerns the theory of a solar wind expansion into a counterflowing ambient interstellar medium, some flaws of the present theoretical attempts are identified impeding that the interstellar influence on the actual solar wind solutions can become visible. We thus conclude that there is a clear need for three-dimensional and time-dependent solar wind models with a free outflow geometry taking into account the multisonicity of the solar wind plasma with different eigenmodes for a perturbation propagation.  相似文献

Energetic proton precipitation occurring during solar events can increase the production of odd nitrogen in the upper stratosphere and mesosphere. A very intense solar proton event (SPE) occurred on 28 October 2003. Its impact on the composition of the middle atmosphere was observed in details due to the availability of several space instruments. Here we present GOMOS observations of a strong NO2increase and a related ozone decrease in the upper stratosphere at north polar latitude. The perturbation of the chemical composition of the stratosphere was observed until the middle of December 2003. A strong NO2 increase was also observed in the south polar vortex in June-July 2003. It is tentatively attributed to the effect of an SPE with protons of moderate energy occurring on 29 May 2003. If this hypothesis is confirmed, it will imply that the global effect of SPEs on the composition of the stratosphere is underestimated when only strong energy SPEs are considered.  相似文献

Despite 20 years of total solar irradiance measurements from space, the lack of high precision spatially resolved observations limits definitive answers to even simple questions like ``Are the solar irradiance changes caused solely by magnetic fields perturbing the radiative flux at the photosphere?" More subtle questions like how the aspheric structure of the sun changes with the magnetic cycle are only now beginning to be addressed with new tools like p-mode helioseismology. Solar 5-min oscillation studies have yielded precise information on the mean radial interior solar structure and some knowledge about the rotational and thermal solar asphericity. Unfortunately this progress has not been enough to generate a self-consistent theory for why the solar irradiance and luminosity vary with the magnetic cycle. We need sharper tools to describe and understand the sun's global aspheric response to its internal dynamo, and we need to be able to measure the solar cycle manifestation of the magnetic cycle on entropy transport from the interior to the photosphere in much the same way that we study the fundamentally more complex problem of magnetic flux transport from the solar interior. A space experiment called the Solar Physics Explorer for Radius, Irradiance and Shape (SPHERIS) and in particular its Astrometric and Photometric Telescope (APT) component will accomplish these goals.

The uninterrupted measurement of the total solar irradiance during the last three solar cycles and an increasing amount of solar spectral irradiance measurements as well as solar imaging observations (magnetograms and photometric data) have stimulated the development of models attributing irradiance variations to solar surface magnetism. Here we review the current status of solar irradiance measurements and modelling efforts based on solar photospheric magnetic fields. Thereby we restrict ourselves to the study of solar variations from days to the solar cycle. Phenomenological models of the solar atmosphere in combination with imaging observations of solar electromagnetic radiation and measurements of the photospheric magnetic field have reached high enough quality to show that a large fraction (at least, about 80%) of the solar irradiance variability can be explained by the radiative effects of the magnetic activity present in the photosphere. Also, significant progress has been made with magnetohydrodynamic simulations of convection that allow us to relate the radiance of the photospheric magnetic structures to the observations.  相似文献

In this paper we assess possible roles of stochastic acceleration by random electric field and plasma motion in the production and transport of energetic particles in the heliosphere. Stochastic acceleration can occur in the presence of multiple small-scale magnetohydrodynamic waves propagating in different directions. Usually, this type of stochastic acceleration is closely related to particle pitch angle scattering or parallel diffusion. Given the values of the parallel diffusion coefficient inferred from the observations of cosmic ray modulation or other energetic particle phenomena in the heliosphere, stochastic acceleration by small-scale waves is much slower than acceleration by shock waves and it is also much slower than adiabatic cooling by the expansion of the solar wind; thus it is considered as inefficient for producing heliospheric energetic particles or for the modulation of cosmic rays. Another type of stochastic acceleration occurs when particles go through random compressions or expansions due to large-scale plasma motion. This acceleration mechanism could be very fast when the correlation time of the fluctuations in plasma compression is short compared to the diffusion time. Particle acceleration by an ensemble of small shock waves or intermittent long wavelength compressible turbulence belongs to this category. It tends to establish an asymptotic p ?3 universal distribution function quickly if there is no or little large-scale adiabatic cooling. Such a particle distribution will contain an infinite amount of pressure. Back reaction from the pressure is expected to modify the amplitude of plasma waves to an equilibrium state. At that point, the pressure of accelerated particles must remain finite and the accelerated particles could approach a p ?5 distribution function.  相似文献

Microstreams and pressure balance structures in fast solar wind were more easily detected at Ulysses at 2.2 AU over the poles than at Helios at 0.3 AU. This is because solar rotation leads to dynamic interactions between different speed regimes at a rate that depends on latitude for the same size features. Dynamic interactions make structures more difficult to detect with increasing distance from the Sun. At solar maximum, Ulysses will sample high latitude solar wind coming from streamers, providing information on fine structure at the tops of streamers and on the source of slow solar wind. Examples are given here of the detectability of various sized structures at Ulysses when it is over the polar regions of the Sun. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Meteor impacts and/or meteor events generate body and surface seismic waves on the surface of a planet. When meteoroids burst in the atmosphere, they generate shock waves that subsequently convert into acoustic waves in the atmosphere and seismic waves in the ground. This effect can be modeled as the amplitude of Rayleigh and other Spheroidal modes excitation, due to atmospheric/ground coupling effects.First, an inversion of the seismic source of Chelyabinsk superbolide is performed. We develop an approach in order to model a line source in the atmosphere, corresponding to the consecutive generation of shock waves by the interaction with the atmosphere. The model is based on the known trajectory. We calculate the synthetic seismograms of Rayleigh waves associated with the event by the summation of normal modes of a model of the solid part and the atmosphere of the planet. Through an inversion technique based on singular value decomposition, we perform a full Rayleigh wave inversion and we provide solutions for the moment magnitude.SEIS will likely detect seismic waves generated by impacts and the later might be further located by remote sensing differential processing. In the case of Mars, we use the same method to obtain waveforms associated with impacts on the planetary surface or in low altitudes in the Martian atmosphere. We show that the contribution of the fundamental spheroidal solid mode is dominating the waveforms, compared to that of the first two overtones. We perform an amplitude comparison and we show that small impactors (diameter of 0.5 to 2 m), can be detected by the SEIS VBB seismometer of InSight mission, even in short epicentral distances, in the higher frequencies of the Rayleigh waves. We perform an analysis based on impact rate estimations and we calculate the number of detectable events of 1 meter diameter meteor impacts to be 6.7 to 13.4 per 1 Martian year for a \(Q=500\).  相似文献

The magnetic energy released inside an active region is closely related to its formation and evolution. Following the evolution of a collection of flux tubes inside the convection zone and above the photosphere we can show that many nonlinear structures (current sheets, shock waves, double layers etc.) are formed. We propose in this review that coronal heating, flares and particle acceleration are due to the interaction of the plasma with these nonlinear structures. Approaching active regions as a driven complex dynamical system we can show that several coherent ensembles of the nonlinear structures will appear spontaneously. The statistical analysis of these structures is a major problem in solar physics. We can also show that many observed large scale structures are the result of the convolution of non-observable fragmentation in the energy release process.  相似文献

We present models of giant planet formation, taking into account migration and disk viscous evolution. We show that migration can significantly reduce the formation timescale bringing it in good agreement with typical observed disk lifetimes. We then present a model that produces a planet whose current location, core mass and total mass are comparable with the one of Jupiter. For this model, we calculate the enrichments in volatiles and compare them with the one measured by the Galileo probe. We show that our models can reproduce both the measured atmosphere enrichments and the constraints derived by Guillot et al. (2004), if we assume the accretion of planetesimals with ices/rocks ratio equal to 4, and that a substantial amount of CO2 was present in vapor phase in the solar nebula, in agreement with ISM measurements.  相似文献

Although in recent years much has been learned about the atmospheric composition and structure of Venus, there are many key questions which remain unanswered. The Pioneer Venus set of experiments is designed to provide information both individually and collectively to help understand and explain first of all the present state of the atmosphere (the composition and distribution in both the lower and upper parts, the state property profiles, the cloud compositions, the role of phase in the thermal structure, the planet's surface and interior composition, the high surface temperature, the stability of CO2, the ionosphere — its chemistry and thermal structure, the existence of superrotation, the response of the upper atmosphere to changes in solar EUV and the solar wind) and secondly the origin and evolution of the atmosphere. This paper discusses these questions and the degree to which the Pioneer Venus instruments will respond to them.  相似文献
