经多次推迟,意大利首颗军民两用遥感卫星"地中海天宇"(Cosmos-Skymed)1终于在6月8日用美国波音公司的德尔它2火箭发射升空。该卫星由泰勒斯·阿列尼亚空间意大利公司为意大利航天局和国防部研制,是由4颗军民两用卫星组成的星座中的第一颗卫星。近年来,越来越多的国家和地区开始打造自己的军用卫星系统,以增强对本国及周边地区的防御能力,减少对美、俄两国的依赖,其中欧洲一些国家正努力建立和发展自己独立的军用卫星系统,特别是侦察卫星。欧洲在发展了两代光学成像侦察卫星之后,2006年12月又由德国发射了首颗雷达成像侦察卫星"合成孔径雷达(SAR)-放大镜",现在意大利又把自己的首颗军民两用雷达成像卫星送上太空,所以引起了世界军事航天界的广泛关注。
