Abstract:The mechanism of a free flight engagement ( FFE ) condition are as follows: the aircraft's arresting hook catches a deck cable in a nose-up orientation with all gears above the deck surface. The aircraft has attained a high pitch attitude and low sink speed at pendant engagement prior to touchdown. Depending upon the landing gear and arresting hook geometry and the aircraft CG position, the resultant arresting force can be below CG and result in a significant contribution to nose down pitching moment. That causes the nose landing gear to first make contact with the deck, followed shortly after by main landing gear contact. The nose-down pitch rate can result in a high nose landing gear sink speed at touchdown. So an FFE at the low sink speed can result in obtaining nose landing gear loads equivalent to those obtained at the high sink speed condition of a normal arrested landing. Based on the consideration and analysis of all possible landing conditions, it's determined that the most critical carder landing condition is that of an FFE for strengths of nose landing gear and its supporting structure of a heavyweight carrier-based aircraft.
