Abstract:This paper has studied the exfoliation behaviour of LY12 and LC4 aluminium alloys in the EXCO-test solution, by employing the resistance method, surface immersion, and microanalysis with electronmicroscope. The variations of the exfoliation rate are indicated by the equivalent corrosion depth. The results agree with those obtained from the EXCO-test (ASTM G34-90). The quantitative methods employed in this paper are more precise and strict than the qualitative EXCO-test. The results show that the exfoliation developed step by step. At first, pitting appeared, then intergranular corrosion occurred, and finally the exfoliation followed. In the various corrosion stages, the variation rates of corrosion depth with immersion time were different. However, the variation of the corrosion depth with the immersion time is essentially logarithmic.
