Abstract:Starting from an incremental stress-strain relationship of the form of Hooke's law, the paper derives expressions of a new constitutive relation for incompressible hyperelasticity. Assuming the stiffness coefficients being a power series of strain invariants, new strain energy functions are obtained. The simplest form of the function has been proved to be an incomplete 3-rd order polynomial containing 7 material constants. Curve fitting based on the formulation for experimental data of four types of rubbers in the literature shows quite satisfactory correlation. In high strain regime, it is superior to Ogden's results. The paper mathematically proves that the first or second order generalized Mooney-Rivlin function which has been widely recommended is inappropriate. Functions containing only the 1-st strain invariant derived from statistical theory is also inappropriate.
