The paper treats some aspects of the widespread concept of a deforming potential and a more generalized approach to the Dirichlet problem in defining the influence of Earth tides on a satellite's movement.In considering theoretical, rather than practical aspects, the solution of the Dirichlet problem is discussed for various reference surfaces in place of the Earth.
