Abstract:Significant changes have arisen recently in FAA standards for the continued airworthiness and operations of transport category airplanes, which brings new challenge to the developing large Chinese airliner applying for type certification. The background of widespread fatigue damage (WFD) requirements in airworthiness regulation for transport category airplanes metallic structures are introduced and the procedure of the WFD assessment for the new type designs and the determination of their operational limits, inspection thresholds and maintenance tasks are described. The author is also sharing his understanding to the WFD concept and the relationship between WFD evaluation and fatigue/damage tolerance evaluation. Suggestions are put forward to enhance the research of the testing and analytical means as well as the engineering development for the WFD evaluation, in order to provide evidence and basis for the large civil aircraft design demonstrating compliance to applicable regulations.
