The SOHO (SOlar and Heliospheric Observatory) satellite was launched on December 2nd 1995. After arriving at the Earth-Sun (L1) Lagrangian point on February 14th 1996, it began to continuously observe the Sun. As one of the instruments onboard SOHO, the EIT (Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope) images the Sun's corona in 4 EUV wavelengths. The He II filter at 304 Å images the chromosphere and the base of the transition region at a temperature of 5 − 8 × 104 K; the Fe IX–X filter at 171 Å images the corona at a temperature of 1.3 × 106 K; the Fe XII filter at 195 Å images the quiet corona outside coronal holes at a temperature of 1.6 × 106 K; and the Fe XV filter at 284 Å images active regions with a temperature of 2.0 × 106 K. About 5000 images have been obtained up to the present. In this paper, we describe also some aspects of the telescope and the detector performance for application in the observations. Images and movies of all the wavelengths allow a look at different phenomena present in the Sun's corona, and in particular, magnetic field reconnection.  相似文献

We show that to explain the opposite line asymmetries shown by the velocity and intensity spectra, it is necessary to solve the full non-adiabatic problem which is at least of the fourth order. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The X-Ray Polychromator experiment has been in operation on the SMM satellite for over three months. It is observing flares and active regions in the wavelength range 1Å to 23Å using a number of different modes. These include polychromatic imaging, high resolution line profiles, high dispersion spectra, and light curves with high time-resolution. Data are described together with some of the preliminary analysis and interpretation.  相似文献

We present first results from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) aboard the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). CDS is a double spectrometer operating in the 151–785 Å range. This region of the solar spectrum is rich in emission lines from trace elements in the solar atmosphere, which can be used to derive diagnostic information on coronal and transition region plasmas. Early spectra are presented and well identified lines are listed. In addition, examples of images in selected wavelength ranges are shown, for a prominence, a loop system and a bright point, demonstrating well the power of such extreme ultraviolet observations.  相似文献

Internal processes in icy satellites, e.g. the exchange of material from the subsurface to the surface or processes leading to volcanism and resurfacing events, are a consequence of the amount of energy available in the satellites’ interiors. The latter is mainly determined shortly after accretion by the amount of radioactive isotopes incorporated in the silicates during the accretion process. However, for satellites—as opposed to single objects—important contributions to the energy budget on long time-scales can come from the interaction with other satellites (forcing of eccentricities of satellites in resonance) and consequently from the tidal interaction with the primary planet. Tidal evolution involves both changes of the rotation state—usually leading to the 1:1 spin orbit coupling—and long-term variations of the satellite orbits. Both processes are dissipative and thus connected with heat production in the interior. The way heat is transported from the interior to the surface (convection, conduction, (cryo-) volcanism) is a second main aspect that determines how internal processes in satellites work. In this chapter we will discuss the physics of heat production and heat transport as well as the rotational and orbital states of satellites. The relevance of the different heat sources for the moons in the outer solar system are compared and discussed.  相似文献

Animal models are frequently used to assist in the determination of the long- and short-term effects of space flight. The space environment, including microgravity, can impact many physiological and immunological system parameters. It has been found that ground based models of microgravity produce changes in white blood cell counts, which negatively affects immunologic function. As part of the Center of Acute Radiation Research (CARR), we compared the acute effects on white blood cell parameters induced by the more traditionally used animal model of hindlimb unloading (HU) with a recently developed reduced weightbearing analog known as partial weight suspension (PWS). Female ICR mice were either hindlimb unloaded or placed in the PWS system at 16% quadrupedal weightbearing for 4 h, 1, 2, 7 or 10 days, at which point complete blood counts were obtained. Control animals (jacketed and non-jacketed) were exposed to identical conditions without reduced weightbearing. Results indicate that significant changes in total white blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte and eosinophil counts were observed within the first 2 days of exposure to each system. These differences in blood cell counts normalized by day 7 in both systems. The results of these studies indicate that there are some statistically significant changes observed in the blood cell counts for animals exposed to both the PWS and HU simulated microgravity systems.  相似文献

The Coronal Helium Abundance Spacelab Experiment, (CHASE), basically consists of a grazing incidence telescope and spectrometer sensitive over the range 150–1335 Å. Whilst aimed primarily at deriving the solar helium abundance from measurements of coronal resonance scattering, its specification has been extended in order to provide a more general purpose solar XUV facility. The instrument will be flown on the Spacelab 2 Mission, currently scheduled for launch in November 1984.Proceedings of the Conference Solar Physics from Space, held at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ), 11–14 November 1980.  相似文献

The plasma produced by a Kaufman (UK-25) ion thruster possesses four distinct regions. The interaction of two of these regions, the coupling and discharge plasmas, is important for thruster design and efficiency, since it controls the production of the primary electrons responsible for most of the ionisation in the thruster. This paper details the measurement and analysis techniques used to obtain two-dimensional experimental plasma parameter maps across a plasma double layer in the baffle aperture region of this type of ion thruster. This plasma-interaction region was mapped experimentally using Langmuir probes. The Langmuir probe data were collected and analysed to produce maps of plasma potential, Maxwellian and primary electron energy and number density. Detailed static magnetic field measurements using Hall-effect probes were also obtained. A number of derived plasma parameter maps were then made possible, such as electron pressure. The application of the analysis techniques used here allowed ion thruster plasma property maps to be constructed of a spatial extent and resolution previously unseen. Two-dimensional maps of the spatial location of primary electrons are presented, as effected by applied magnetic field changes, along with the detection of regions showing depletion of primary electron energies.  相似文献
