Since more than 10 years there is evidence that small-size space debris is accumulating in the geosynchronous orbit (GEO), probably as the result of breakups. Two break-ups have been reported in GEO. The 1978 break-up of an EKRAN 2 satellite, SSN 10365, was identified in 1992, and in 1992 a Titan 3C Transtage, SSN 3432, break-up produced at least twenty observable pieces. Subsequently several nations performed optical surveys of the GEO region in the form of independent observation campaigns. Such surveys suffer from the fact that the field of view of optical telescopes is small compared with the total area covered by the GEO ring. As a consequence only a small volume of the orbital element-magnitude-space is covered by each individual survey. Results from these surveys are thus affected by observational biases and therefore difficult to compare. This paper describes the development of a common search strategy to overcome these limitations. The strategy optimizes the sampling for objects in orbits similar to the orbits of the known GEO population but does not exclude the detection of objects with other orbital planes. A properly designed common search strategy clearly eases the comparison of results from different groups and the extrapolation from the sparse (biased) samples to the entire GEO environment.  相似文献

The Cassini-Huygens Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA) is intended to provide direct observations of dust grains with masses between 10−19 and 10−9 kg in interplanetary space and in the jovian and saturnian systems, to investigate their physical, chemical and dynamical properties as functions of the distances to the Sun, to Jupiter and to Saturn and its satellites and rings, to study their interaction with the saturnian rings, satellites and magnetosphere. Chemical composition of interplanetary meteoroids will be compared with asteroidal and cometary dust, as well as with Saturn dust, ejecta from rings and satellites. Ring and satellites phenomena which might be effects of meteoroid impacts will be compared with the interplanetary dust environment. Electrical charges of particulate matter in the magnetosphere and its consequences will be studied, e.g. the effects of the ambient plasma and the magnetic field on the trajectories of dust particles as well as fragmentation of particles due to electrostatic disruption. The investigation will be performed with an instrument that measures the mass, composition, electric charge, speed, and flight direction of individual dust particles. It is a highly reliable and versatile instrument with a mass sensitivity 106 times higher than that of the Pioneer 10 and 11 dust detectors which measured dust in the saturnian system. The Cosmic Dust Analyzer has significant inheritance from former space instrumentation developed for the VEGA, Giotto, Galileo, and Ulysses missions. It will reliably measure impacts from as low as 1 impact per month up to 104 impacts per second. The instrument weighs 17 kg and consumes 12 W, the integrated time-of-flight mass spectrometer has a mass resolution of up to 50. The nominal data transmission rate is 524 bits/s and varies between 50 and 4192 bps. This revised version was published online in July 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

Remote sensing of the surface of Europa with near-infrared instruments has suggested the presence of hydrated materials, including sulfate salts. Attention has been focused on these salts for the information they might yield regarding the evolution of a putative interior ocean, and the evaluation of its astrobiological potential. These materials exhibit distinct infrared absorption features due to bound water. The interactions of this water with the host molecules lead to fine structure that can be used to discriminate among these materials on the basis of their spectral behavior. This fine structure is even more pronounced at the low temperatures prevalent on icy satellites. Examination of hydrated sulfate salt spectra measured under cryogenic temperature conditions provides realistic constraints for future remote-sensing missions to Europa. In particular, it suggests that a spectrometer system capable of 2-5 nm spectral resolution or better, with a spatial resolution approaching 100 m, would be able to differentiate among proposed hydrated surface materials, if present, and constrain their distributions across the surface. Such information would provide valuable insights into the evolutionary history of Europa.  相似文献

Recent analyses of spacecraft data, especially AMPTE/IRM data, provide a test of reconnection theory; an analysis for the signature of a local tangential stress balance in a one-dimensional time-stationary rotational discontinuity has left crucial questions unanswered. A key result is that the electron temperature profile inward through the magnetopause current sheet shows heating followed by cooling. Electrons must be one of the carriers of the current; hence this result reflects the sign of E · J in the frame of reference of the magnetopause current carriers. Since the current is directed from dawn to dusk, the inescapable conclusion is that the electric field must reverse within the current sheet. This is direct evidence of a load–dynamo combination; in that dynamo, energy is transferred from the solar wind plasma to the electromagnetic field. A dynamo is not included in the reconnection model which includes only the electrical load; therefore, we argue that the reconnection problem is improperly posed. A second compelling observation is a remarkable difference of the normal component of the plasma velocity between inbound and outbound crossings. For an inbound crossing (outward current meander) this component does reverse, but not quite as assumed in the reconnection model; on the other hand, for outbound crossings of the spacecraft (corresponding to erosion) there is no reversal at all. The normal component is approximately constant at 20 km s-1, anti-Sunward throughout. Since the typical motion of the magnetopause is 10 km s-1 this revealing result shows that solar wind plasma can go across the magnetopause, even onto closed field lines to feed the low latitude boundary layer. This is in stark contrast to the reconnection model where the plasma goes to open field lines. The interaction can be understood by appealing to Poynting's theorem, where E · J describes the net effect on or by the plasma. Time-dependent terms (even in the initial conditions) must be used so that it is possible to draw upon energy which has been stored locally in both electrical and magnetic forms. An extended discussion of observational results from ground-based, rocket, and satellite instruments indicate the impulsive nature of the solar wind–magnetospheric interaction. There is a lot of plasma involved in this interaction, over 1027 ions electrons-1 per second; the anti-Sunward flow takes place in the low latitude boundary layer. There is no flux catastrophe produced by this flow since the frozen-field theorem does not hold for plasma transfer across the magnetopause. The LLBL completely envelops the plasma sheet; the LLBL is the source of its plasma, not the plasma mantle as hypothesized in the reconnection model of the magnetotail. A number of serious errors have occurred in some articles in the literature on reconnection, and we list and discuss the most important of these. In the conclusion it is emphasized that the failure to provide a viable energy source, within the necessary spatial and temporal constraints, is responsible for the failure of reconnection model. This does not mean that the state of interconnection between the geomagnetic field and the interplanetary magnetic field can not change, but it does mean that the advocated process is not relevant to such changes. True reconnection requires that the electric field has a curl so that an electromotive force = E · dl = -dMdt exists through which energy can be interchanged with stored magnetic energy.  相似文献

In the present paper the local-time variations in the disturbance of the geomagnetic-field horizontal component (H) for eight intense geomagnetic storms that occurred during the descending phase of solar cycle 23 have been analyzed. The study was based on the plot of contour lines of the H-depletion intensity in the plane local time versus universal time (LT–UT maps) with the objective of observing how the morphology and evolution of the ring current is mapped into the surface of the Earth in presence of intense geomagnetic storms.  相似文献

The delay-lock loop is a device for tracking the delay difference between two correlated waveforms. It is used as a synchronizing loop for binary communications and tracking. The delay tracking performance is derived for various radio-frequency implementations of the binary delay-lock loop. Amplitude and biphase modulation by pseudorandom sequences are considered. Three types of receivers are analyzed for each modulation: envelope correlation, phase-coherent correlation, and phase-lock demodulation followed by video correlation.  相似文献

A concept for a new space-based cosmology mission called the Dark Ages Radio Explorer (DARE) is presented in this paper. DARE’s science objectives include: (1) When did the first stars form? (2) When did the first accreting black holes form? (3) When did Reionization begin? (4) What surprises does the end of the Dark Ages hold (e.g., Dark Matter decay)? DARE will use the highly-redshifted hyperfine 21-cm transition from neutral hydrogen to track the formation of the first luminous objects by their impact on the intergalactic medium during the end of the Dark Ages and during Cosmic Dawn (redshifts z = 11–35). It will measure the sky-averaged spin temperature of neutral hydrogen at the unexplored epoch 80–420 million years after the Big Bang, providing the first evidence of the earliest stars and galaxies to illuminate the cosmos and testing our models of galaxy formation. DARE’s approach is to measure the expected spectral features in the sky-averaged, redshifted 21-cm signal over a radio bandpass of 40–120 MHz. DARE orbits the Moon for a mission lifetime of 3 years and takes data above the lunar farside, the only location in the inner solar system proven to be free of human-generated radio frequency interference and any significant ionosphere. The science instrument is composed of a low frequency radiometer, including electrically-short, tapered, bi-conical dipole antennas, a receiver, and a digital spectrometer. The smooth frequency response of the antennas and the differential spectral calibration approach using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo technique will be applied to detect the weak cosmic 21-cm signal in the presence of the intense solar system and Galactic foreground emissions.  相似文献

Available long-term and near-real time global and regional maps of foF2 are examined in relation to telecommunication and aeronomy requirements and recommendations are made for the best present-day maps to adopt. In particular, it is shown that current CCIR maps do not meet all requirements and should not necessarily be regarded as standards against which other mappings should be compared.  相似文献
