In the standard control design of powered spacecraft, guidance and attitude control are two independent problems which are attacked separately. As an example of joint guidance and attitude control synthesis, this communication presents the solution to the planar, minimum-time, optimal control problem of a powered spacecraft. The control is determined by a numerical technique based upon the maximum principle. The results provide a display of the various possible maneuver shapes and then provide a guide for a practical definition of closed-loop control laws.

A lightning swept stroke model: A valuable tool to investigate the lightning strike to aircraft

In the context of lightning strike on the Dassault Falcon family of aircraft, the standard zoning of Falcon 50, 900 and 2000, inferred from FAA and EUROCAE WG31 documents [US Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Advisory Circular AC 20-53A, 1985; US Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, Advisory Circular AC 20-53B, Draft, 1991; EUROCAE WG 31, Aircraft Lightning Zoning Standard, ED-91, 1998], has been presented. Zoning proves to be quite similar between the three types of aircraft. Thanks to the feed-back on lightning strikes to Falcon, lightning traces have been observed on the fuselage for different flight conditions and aircraft. Observations are compared with the zoning performed by Dassault. A physical model, developed by ONERA, was used to simulate the sweeping of lightning on the fuselage of a Falcon 900. The results are in good agreement with the lightning traces observed on the fuselages.     

Creating a productive international partnership in the Vision for Space Exploration

When US President George W. Bush on 14 January 2004 announced a new US “Vision for Space Exploration”, he called for international participation in “a journey, not a race”, a call received with skepticism and concern elsewhere. But, after a slow start in implementing this directive, during 2006 NASA has increased the forward momentum of action on the program and of discussions on international cooperation in exploring “the Moon, Mars, and beyond”. There are nevertheless a number of significant top-level issues that must be addressed if a cooperative approach to human space exploration is to be pursued. These include the relationship between utilization of the ISS and the lunar exploration plans, integration of potential partners’ current and future capabilities into the exploration plans, and the evolving space-related intentions of other countries.     

Organic syntheses in gas phase and chemical evolution in planetary atmospheres

Atmospheric chemistry may be one of the important pathways to the synthesis of organic compounds in a planetary periphery. Depending on the nature of the carbon source (CH₄, CO or CO₂), the main composition of the atmosphere, and the respective roles of the various energy sources, is it possible, and to what extent, to produce organics? What kind of gaseous mixture is the most favourable to prebiotic organic syntheses? How far can the results of laboratory works be extrapolated to the case of planetary atmospheres? These questions are discussed, on the basis of several available laboratory data, and by considering the main atmospheric composition of the planets of the solar system, and the list of organic compounds which have already been dettected in their atmospheres.     

THE STUDY OF AIRPORTTERRAIN EFFECTS ON AUTOLAND FOR ANY AIRPLANE

<正> The terrain profile at several airports has caused some difficulty with autolands on the DC-10 and MD-80. Some operators have reported that the pilot had to disconnect the flight guidance system during flare and land manually. At present, the autoland guidance system is not uniquely designed to handle the variations of terrain. Since there is no accurate substitute for radio altitude(h_(rad)) the only variable left to improve is radio altitude rate (h_(rad)).     

Attached payloads on SPACEHAB, growing from the Space Shuttle to the Space Station

Although NASA's Space Shuttle is largely dedicated in the near term to Space Station assembly, 10–16 day flight opportunities still abound for spacecraft technology demonstration payloads, and experiments for the established earth and space science communities. This paper will present the latest developments of SPACEHAB flight systems in order to accommodate the flight needs of these communities on the Space Shuttle today and the Space Station tomorrow. In particular, some examples of payloads from these disciplines will be introduced together with the accommodation and experiment objectives.     

The Cool Interstellar Medium

Infrared spectroscopy and photometry with ISO covering most of the emission range of the interstellar medium has led to important progress in the understanding of the physics and chemistry of the gas, the nature and evolution of the dust grains and also the coupling between the gas and the grains. We review here the ISO results on the cool and low-excitation regions of the interstellar medium, where T _gas≲ 500 K, n _H∼ 100–10⁵ cm⁻³ and the electron density is a few 10⁻⁴.
