During gravitropic bending of the stipe of Coprinus cinereus the majority of elongation occurred in the apical region of the lower surface of the stipe, although some elongation was seen throughout the stipe. The final rate of elongation was similar at both the upper and lower stipe surfaces but the lower surface achieved this rate first (close to the reaction time 25 min), whilst the upper surface of the stipe only attained its final elongation rate after a period of acceleration of 150 min. Detailed morphometric analysis of cell size patterning in transverse sections revealed no significant differences in cross sectional area, spatial or proportional distribution of different cell types between the upper and lower regions of the gravitropic bend. Measurements of longitudinal cell size revealed significant differences in compartment size between the lower and upper region. Hyphal compartments of lower regions of the bend were on average four to five times longer than those of the upper region.  相似文献

The ratio of specularly reflected to scattered power received by a radar altimeter is shown to be related to a parameter q = (4K2/?0 ?2), where K is the Fresnel reflection coefficient, ?0 is the differential scattering coefficient, and ? is the effective beamwidth. The critical range of rms surface roughness is shown to be from 0.1 to 0.335 ? for examples from 100-ns-pulse aircraft radar to 10-ns-pulse spacecraft radar over water.  相似文献

The role of Ca2+ in the gravitropic perception and/or response mechanism of Coprinus cinereus was examined by treating stipes with inhibitors of Ca2+ transport and calmodulin. Inhibitors had no effect on gravity perception but significantly diminished gravitropism. It is concluded that, under the conditions tested, Ca2+ is not involved in gravity perception by Coprinus stipes, but does contribute to transduction of the gravitropic impulse. The results would be consistent with regulation of the gravitropic bending process requiring accumulation of Ca2+ within a membrane-bound compartment. Treatment of stipes with an actin inhibitor caused a significantly delayed response, a result not observed with the Ca2+ inhibitors. This suggests that cytoskeletal elements may be involved directly in perception of gravity by Coprinus stipes while Ca(2+)-mediated signal transduction may be involved in directing growth differentials.  相似文献

One of the IMAGE mission science goals is to understand the dayside auroral oval and its dynamic relationship to the magnetosphere. Two ways the auroral oval is dynamically coupled to the magnetosphere are through the injection of magnetosheath plasma into the magnetospheric cusps and through the ejection of ionospheric plasma into the magnetosphere. The ionospheric footpoints of the Earth's magnetospheric cusps are relatively narrow regions in invariant latitude that map magnetically to the magnetopause. Monitoring the cusp reveals two important aspects of magnetic reconnection at the magnetopause. Continuous cusp observations reveal the relative contributions of quasi-steady versus impulsive reconnection to the overall transfer of mass, energy, and momentum across the magnetopause. The location of the cusp is used to determine where magnetic reconnection is occurring on the magnetopause. Of particular interest is the distinction between anti-parallel reconnection, where the magnetosheath and magnetospheric field lines are strictly anti-parallel, and component merging, where the magnetosheath and magnetospheric field lines have one component that is anti-parallel. IMAGE observations suggest that quasi-steady, anti-parallel reconnection is occurring in regions at the dayside magnetopause. However, it is difficult to rule out additional component reconnection using these observations. The ionospheric footpoint of the cusp is also a region of relatively intense ionospheric outflow. Since outflow also occurs in other regions of the auroral oval, one of the long-standing problems has been to determine the relative contributions of the cusp/cleft and the rest of the auroral oval to the overall ionospheric ion content in the Earth's magnetosphere. While the nature of ionospheric outflow has made it difficult to resolve this long-standing problem, the new neutral atom images from IMAGE have provided important evidence that ionospheric outflow is strongly controlled by solar wind input, is `prompt' in response to changes in the solar wind, and may have very narrow and distinct pitch angle structures and charge exchange altitudes.  相似文献

The Energetic Particle and Plasma Spectrometer (EPPS) package on the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission to Mercury is composed of two sensors, the Energetic Particle Spectrometer (EPS) and the Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS). EPS measures the energy, angular, and compositional distributions of the high-energy components of the in situ electrons (>20 keV) and ions (>5 keV/nucleon), while FIPS measures the energy, angular, and compositional distributions of the low-energy components of the ion distributions (<50 eV/charge to 20 keV/charge). Both EPS and FIPS have very small footprints, and their combined mass (∼3 kg) is significantly lower than that of comparable instruments.  相似文献

Tírez Lake (La Mancha, central Spain) is proposed as a terrestrial analogue of Europa's ocean. The proposal is based on the comparison of the hydrogeochemistry of Tírez Lake with the geochemical features of the alteration mineralogy of meteoritic precursors and with Galileo's Near Infrared Mapping Spectrometer data on Europa's surface. To validate the astrobiological potential of Tírez Lake as an analog of Europa, different hydrogeochemical, mineral, and microbial analyses were performed. Experimental and theoretical modeling helped to understand the crystallization pathways that may occur in Europa's crust. Calculations about the oxidation state of the hypothetical Europan ocean were estimated to support the sulfate-rich neutral liquid model as the origin of Europa's observed hydrated minerals and to facilitate their comparison with Tírez's hydrogeochemistry. Hydrogeochemical and mineralogical analyses showed that Tírez waters corresponded to Mg-Na-SO(4)-Cl brines with epsomite, hexahydrite, and halite as end members. A preliminary microbial ecology characterization identified two different microbial domains: a photosynthetically sustained community represented by planktonic/benthonic forms and microbial mat communities, and a subsurficial anaerobic realm in which chemolithotrophy predominates. Fluorescence in situ hybridization has been used to characterize the prokaryotic diversity of the system. The subsurficial community seemed to be dominated by sulfate-reducing bacteria and methanogens. Frozen Tírez brines were analyzed by Fourier-transform infrared techniques providing spectra similar to those reported previously using pure components and to the Galileo spectral data. Calorimetric measurements of Tírez brines showed pathways and phase metastability for magnesium sulfate and sodium chloride crystallization that may aid in understanding the processes involved in the formation of Europa's icy crust. The use of fluorescence hybridization techniques for microbial detection and characterization in hypersaline environments makes this methodology strongly advisable for future Europa astrobiological missions.  相似文献

A technique for calculating the derogation in the difference in depth of modulation (DDM) signal, used for aircraft glide slope guidance, due to slightly rough ground surfaces is developed. The contributions to the scattered signal from diffuse and specular scatter are treated separately. The diffuse derogation is calculated based on empirical data, and an average variation is presented. The specular contributions to the variation in the signal is calculated based on expanding the half-plane diffraction solution in terms of the ground roughness. A specular scattered deviation about the mean signal is then obtained by statistically averaging over normally distributed ground heights. Results of the analysis indicate that substantial relaxation in grading criteria can be effected.  相似文献

We report on the development of a passive sorption pump, capable of maintaining high-vacuum conditions in the InSight seismometer throughout the duration of any extended mission. The adsorber material is a novel zeolite-loaded aerogel (ZLA) composite, which consists of fine zeolite particles homogeneously dispersed throughout a porous silica network. The outgassing species within the SEIS evacuated container were analyzed and the outgassing rate was estimated by different methods. The results were used to optimize the ZLA composition to adsorb the outgassing constituents, dominated by water, while minimizing the SEIS bakeout constraints. The InSight ZLA composite additionally facilitated substantial CO2 adsorption capabilities for risk mitigation against external leaks in Mars atmosphere. To comply with the stringent particle requirements, the ZLA getters were packaged in sealed containers, open to the SEIS interior through \(1~\upmu\mbox{m}\)-size pore filters. Results from experimental validation and verification tests of the packaged getters are presented. The pressure forecast based on these data, corroborated by rudimentary in situ pressure measurements, infer SEIS operational pressures not exceeding \(10^{-5}~\mbox{mbar}\) throughout the mission.  相似文献

Recent advancements in the field of microfluidics have generated much interest in the advent of a miniaturized cell culture device. In this study, we developed a novel miniature culture system for the continuous long-term cultivation of both anchorage dependent and suspension cells, either prokaryotic or eukaryotic in type, for both 1 g and microgravity applications. The miniature culture system may advance the development of microanalytical remote monitoring tools such as biological sentinels, biosensors, and lab-on-a-chip. Integrating the autonomous miniature culture system with a microanalytical device makes a powerful biological tool. Cells can be cultured long-term, harvested, and released directly into an analytical tool without the need for human interaction through fluid dynamic manipulations. This work characterizes the miniature bioreactor system through numerical and experimental proof of concept studies.  相似文献
