The object H0323+022 (Doxsey et al. 1983) has been shown to be a BL Lac object by virtue of a diversity of observational characteristics at radio, optical, and x-ray wavelengths, in agreement with the conclusion of Margon and Jacoby (1984). Multi-frequency coordinated observations of this highly variable object with EXOSAT in September 1984 found it to be in a faint quiescent state (1/3; Jy at 5 keV and V=16.55). Preliminary results from the latter observations are presented.  相似文献

We review aspects of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) that bear on the solar modulation of energetic particles in the heliosphere. We show that the latitudinal and radial gradients of these particles exhibit a 22-year periodicity in concert with the reversal of the Sun's magnetic field. The power-law index of the low energy portion of the energy spectrum of ACRs at the shock in 1996 appears to be -1.3, suggesting that the strength of the solar wind termination shock at the helioequatorial plane is relatively weak, with s 2.8. The rigidity dependence of the perpendicular interplanetary mean free path in the outer heliosphere for particles with rigidities between 0.2 and 0.7 GV varies approximately as R2, where R is particle rigidity. There is evidence that ACR oxygen is primarily multiply charged above 20 MeV/nuc and primarily singly-charged below 16 MeV/nuc. The location of the termination shock was at 65 AU in 1987 and 85 AU in 1994.  相似文献

Conclusions X-ray variability is seen in all types of AGN but large amplitude ( factor 2) outbursts on short timescales (days) occur rarely, perhaps once every 100 days. There is no strong dependence of variability on luminosity, but radio-powerful AGN, particularly BL Lacs and 0VV QS0s, do vary most. Sensitive detectors, such as the EXOSAT ME, have been able to detect variability of smaller amplitude (20%) and on shorter timescales (1 hour) than previous experiments, but this too is not common. There is very little evidence of spectral variability during changes in intensity and so it is very likely that such changes are total power variations and not artefacts of variable obscuration. The variability timescales imply that most Seyfert galaxies are emitting well below the Eddington limit. On efficiency considerations only two observations of X-ray variability, those of the QS01525+227 and the BL Lac H0322+022, require exotic black hole models, relativistic beaming, or a change in the assumed value of H0. The most dramatic observation of variability so far reported, that of repeated variations on a timescale of 4000 seconds in NGC4051 is probably related to a hydrodynamical timescale in the accretion disc and encourages us to believe that, with future observations, our understanding of AGN may approach that of galactic X-ray sources. Many Seyferts do have a canonical =0.7 spectral index, but it is becoming increasingly clear that a wide variety of spectral indices exist, both in Seyfert galaxies and in other classes of AGN. Both thermal and non-thermal emission mechanisms are tenable explanations for most of these spectra as, in general, the very high energy observations which could distinguish between the two are not available.Timing observations rarely require relativistic beaming, however, the (low) observed X-ray fluxes of BL Lacs and 0VV QS0s generally do. reacceleration of particles on short timescales is necessary to explain the continuous infrared to X-ray spectra of BL Lacs. The status of soft excesses in the low energy spectra of Seyfert galaxies which have canonical medium energy spectra is not clear. A separate soft component has been detected in EXOSAT observations of NGC4151 but this need not be associated with the nuclear continuum source. No SSS or EXOSAT observations definitely require such excesses. EXOSAT is, in principle, very sensitive to soft excesses but the uncertainty in the Boron filter calibration and in the value of the galactic absorption at present limit precise determinations. The absorbing column in the direction of many AGN is, in many cases, entirely accountable for purely by absorption in our own galaxy. In cases where a substantial absorbing column is detected, variations in the column are occasionally seen but it is not yet clear whether these variations are due to bulk movements of obscuring material or increased photoionisation (warm absorbers). All observations of iron lines are consistent with fluorescence in a cold gas which probably surrounds the X-ray emitting region in a sphere or shell-type geometry, though (by Gauss' law) this need not necessarily lie immediately next to the central black hole.Detailed observations of the time-variability of the complete X-ray to radio spectrum offer the best hope of further progress in this complex but interesting field.  相似文献

3C273 has been monitored by EXOSAT over the period December 1983 to June 1984 in 4 observations. In the December observation the flux was high and the spectrum showed a power law index of 1.5 changing to 0.9 at8 keV. In subsequent observations the flux dropped to40% of its original value and the hard tail disappeared. In the last observation the LE flux increased by a factor of 2 with no accompanying ME flux increase.  相似文献

Following the success of Einstein, it is clear that telescopes of very large area (10 cm) with angular resolution (20) are needed for deep X-ray surveys and other observations. After a discussion of these objectives, which form the basis of the NASA LAMAR mission, the design & performance of a five mirror telescope is described. The system was studied for possible flight on Spacelab to undertake observations & to act as a prototype module for LAMAR. Both diamond turning & replication methods of mirror production are discussed. The performance of a single Wolter I telescope with diamond turned mirrors will be described.  相似文献

We report initial measurements from the ULECA sensor of the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland experiment on ISEE-1. ULECA is an electrostatic deflection — total energy sensor consisting of a collimator, deflection analyzer and an array of solid state detectors. The position of a given detector, which determines the energy per charge of an incident particle, together with the measured energy determine the particle's charge state. We find that a rich variety of phenomena are operative in the transthermal energy regime (10 keV/Q to 100 keV/Q) covered by ULECA. Specifically, we present observations of locally accelerated protons, alpha particles, and heavier ions in the magnetosheath and upstream of the Earth's bow shock. Preliminary analysis indicates that the behavior of these locally accelerated particles is most similar at the same energy per charge.  相似文献

Observations of NGC 5194/95 with the Einstein HRI show a very strong nuclear X-ray source, surrounded by a diffuse flux, three point sources and the companion. The diffuse flux, which correlates well with the radio continuum, is likely to originate from the disk population with age 2·109 yrs. The large luminosity from the nuclear source, together with optical and radio observations, shows that it belongs to the low luminosity active nuclei, thus extending this class to luminosities less than 1040 erg/s.  相似文献

Small scale structure in local interstellar matter (LISM) is considered. Overall morphology of the local cloud complex is inferred from Ca II absorption lines and observations of H I in white dwarf stars. Clouds with column densities ranging from 2–100 × 1017 cm–2 are found within 20 pc of the Sun. Cold (50 K) dense (105 cm–3) small (5–10 au) clouds could be embedded and currently undetected in the upwind gas. The Sun appears to be embedded in a filament of gas with thickness 0.7 pc, and cross-wise column density 2 × 1017 cm–2. The local magnetic field direction is parallel to the filament, suggesting that the physical process causing the filamentation is MHD related. Enhanced abundances of refractory elements and LISM kinematics indicate outflowing gas from the Scorpius-Centaurus Association. The local flow vector and Sco data are consistent with a 4,000,000 year old superbubble shell at –22 km s–1, which is a shock front passing through preshock gas at –12 km s–1, and yielding cooled postshock gas at –26 km s–1in the upwind direction. A preshock magnetic field strength of 1.6 G, and postshock field strength of 5.2 G embedded in the superbubble shell, are consistent with the data.Abbreviations LISM Local ISM - SIC Surrounding Interstellar Cloud - LIC Local Interstellar Cloud  相似文献

In order to obtain optical identifications and further information about the X-ray emission of sources discovered in the EINSTEIN IPC survey of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we have used the EXOSAT CMA and EINSTEIN HRI at selected positions. These observations have so far resulted in several identifications (including 4 stellar objects with mv 14 to 21 and a Seyfert galaxy), and the discovery of two new X-ray sources. Medium energy X-rays (2–6 keV) have been detected from the brightest SNR in the SMC, 1E0102.2-7219. We present here an initial report of these results.  相似文献

Power-line harmonic radiation and the electron slot   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
World maps of the occurrence of VLF emissions obtained by the satellites Ariel 3 and 4 reveal maxima above industrial regions of high power consumption in North America and Euro-Asia. A study of the generation and radiation of power line harmonics indicates that these may be a major source of the observed signals. The latter propagate in the whistler mode into the geomagnetically conjugate regions in the southern hemisphere. A particularly prominent zone of emission is obtained at VLF (3.2 kHz) over North America where frequent magnetospheric wave amplification/stimulated emission, up to 50 dB and typically 10 to 20 dB above a baseline level that we ascribe to power harmonic radiation (PLHR), is obtained at invariant latitudes 45 to 55° (2 < L < 3) centred on the electron slot. It appears that PLHR may be responsible for pitch angle diffusion of energetic electrons (E 100 keV) at large pitch angles by first-order resonance and thereby contribute to the formation of the electron slot. There is a strong seasonal variation in wave-amplification/stimulated emission which we suggest may be due to a variation in the ability of the waves to become entrapped in ducts where wave-amplification occurs through a phase-bunching process. There is a strong correlation between D ST and signal intensity, the latter lagging by 1–5 hr in the morning and 10 hr in the evening; here again wave-amplification appears to depend on duct formation and wave trapping therein. One or two (or multi) hop emissions occur with about equal probability at 3.2 kHz; at 9.6 kHz one hop are predominant.Paper presented at the Fifth International Wrocaw Symposium on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Wroclaw (Poland), 17–19 September, 1980. The Medium Energy Instrument on EXOSAT, although conceived as the main instrument for occultations, has been made sufficiently versatile to provide a significant advance over previous large area proportional counters when used for individual source studies of timing and spectra. The energy range is 1.2 to 50 keV, with E/E of 0.2 at 6 keV, sufficient to detect iron lines. The effective area of 1800 cm2 and narrow field of view (3/4° × 3/4°) make it suitable for the detailed study of sources down to the 0.3 mCrab confusion limit. The unique facility provided by EXOSAT, allowing uninterrupted observations of X-ray sources for periods of up to 80 hours, backed up by a high capacity data link and on-board processing, enables timing studies to be performed over the range from milliseconds to days. Sophisticated background discrimination techniques giving a rejection efficiency of99% will control the background count rate to a suitably low value in the environment of the 200,000 km orbit.  相似文献

A series of spectacular cosmic ray events which included two relativistic solar particle enhancements and three major Forbush decreases were registered by ground-based cosmic ray monitoring stations beginning 4 August, 1972. These were associated with four major proton flare events on the Sun and with large interplanetary magnetic field disturbances and high velocity shock waves. This review attempts to discuss and interpret the high energy cosmic ray phenomena observed during this period in the light of the known behaviour of low energy particulate flux, interplanetary plasma and field observations and other associated solar and terrestrial effects recorded during this period. The first Forbush decrease event FD-1 occurred in the early hours of 4 August, exhibiting very strong north-south and east-west anisotropies. Immediately following the onset of FD-1, the first ground level solar particle enhancement occurred. This event, which had its onset almost 6 h after the flare event on 4 August, had a very steep rigidity spectrum. The major Forbush event of the series which had its onset at 2200 UT on 4 August, exhibited extremely interesting and complex behaviour, the prominent features of which are a precursory increase prior to the onset (PI-1), a large decrease (FD-2), the largest observed to date, followed immediately by an abrupt square wave like enhancement (PI-2). Interplanetary space during this entire period was highly disturbed by the presence of large low energy particulate fluxes and shock waves, at least one of which had a velocity exceeding 2000 km s-1. Large north-south and east-west anisotropies existed throughout the event. Both FD-2 and PI-2 were characterized by almost the same rigidity spectrum, with a power law index of -1.2 ± 0.2, and a predominant anisotropy along the sunward direction. The square wave-like spike PI-2 during the recovery of FD-2 was associated with a similar abrupt change in low energy particle flux in space, as well as an abrupt decrease in the interplanetary magnetic field value from 50 to 10 .Based on the available particle, field and plasma observations, an unified model is presented to explain the Forbush event in terms of a transient modulating region associated with the passage of a narrow magnetic shock front. In this model, the reflection of particles from the approaching shock front account for the precursory increase PI-1. The main Forbush event is caused when the magnetic barrier at the shock front sweeps past the Earth. The square wave increase is due to the enhanced flux contained in the magnetic well just behind the shock front and bounded by magnetic discontinuities, which is explained as due to the transverse diffusion of particles into this region from the interplanetary space which have easy access to this region. In situ plasma, field and low energy particle observations are reviewed to support the model. Also Professor at Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad 380009, India.  相似文献

We present the results of four observations made by the European Space Agency's EXOSAT Observatory of the X-ray transient 4U1630-47 during its 1984 outburst. We observed marked spectral changes as the source decayed from a maximum observed intensity of 8×10–9 erg/cm2/sec (1.5–10 keV). The spectrum could be modelled by a soft thermal-like component with a high energy power-law tail. The relative contribution of the soft to hard component decreased as the total luminosity decreased. We compare these changes with those observed from the black hole candidate Cyg X-1 when it transitions from a high to a low state. In addition we report the discovery of short timescale intensity variations (down to 50 msec) with a characteristic timescale of 20 sec. We present a precise position for this unidentified source.on leave from Università di Roma Dipartimento di Fisica G. Marconi.  相似文献

Solar wind observations associated with the enhanced levels of solar activity in August 1972 are reviewed with an emphasis on recent analyses which more unambiguously characterize the changes in the interplanetary medium. Observations from Pioneer 9 at 0.8 AU, Pioneer 10 at 2.2 AU, and in the vicinity of Earth are reviewed and reinterpreted in the light of new data. Recent calculations of local shock velocities are reviewed and their implications discussed. These results indicate that contrary to previously published observations there is no significant deceleration of the interplanetary shocks between 0.8 AU and 2.2 AU.  相似文献

The basic physical processes that lead to the long-term modulation of cosmic rays by the solar wind have been known for many years. However our knowledge of the structure of the heliosphere, which determines which processes are most important for the modulation, and of the variation of this structure with time and solar activity level is still incomplete. Study of the modulation provides a tool for probing the scale and structure of the heliosphere. While the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft are surveying the radial structure and extent of the heliosphere at modest heliographic latitudes, theUlysses mission is the first to undertake a nearly complete scan of the latitudinal structure of the modulated cosmic ray intensity in the inner heliosphere (R<5.4 AU).Ulysses will reach latitudes of 80°S in September 1994 and 80°N in July 1995 during the approach to minimum activity in the 11 year solar cycle. We present a first report of measurements extending to latitudes of 52°S, which show surprisingly little latitudinal effect in the modulated intensities and suggest that at this time modulation in the inner heliosphere may be much more spherically symmetric than had generally been believed based upon models and previous observations.  相似文献

We report the results of a study of the 12-hour average distribution functions of high Z nuclei as measured over a 10-day interval on the Ulysses spacecraft at a helioradius of5.2 A.U. We use the good time and atomic mass resolution of the composition aperture of the HI-SCALE instrument to determine the form of the distribution functions for C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe over the energy range 0.5–16 MeV/nucl. We find that the distribution functions of these ions can be organized by characteristic velocities that have values ranging between2000–3500 km/sec over this interval.  相似文献

A new EXOSAT (LE/CMA) observation of the region in Crux (R.A. 11h 45m, Dec. -62°) where Markert et al. (1981) reported the existence of two x-ray SNR's is presented. After cleaning the CMA field from the point source component, due to the UV emission of the numerous stars in the field, the smoothed x-ray contours are compared to the 408 MHz radio map of Caswell et al. (1983). The existence of two, well-separate x-ray emission regions is confirmed by EXOSAT, and the current x-ray/radio picture is not sufficent to distinguish clearly between the assumption of one or two (possibly interacting) SNR's in the region.  相似文献

Results are presented of three 40 d COS-B X-ray observations of Cyg X-3. The shape of the 4.8 h light curve showed variations on all observational time scales. An 20 d periodicity was found in the arrival time of the minimum of the light curve, interpreted as apsidal motion of an orbit with an eccentricity of 0.03.  相似文献

We review the X- and gamma-ray observations of Cygnus X-1 and their theoretical interpretations, with emphasis on new developments since the mid-1970's. The overall data base at present is most consistent with the inverse Compton model by hot thermal electrons of T e 109 K, for the hard X-ray luminosity (10–200 keV). However, the origin of the soft X-rays ( 10 keV) in high states and gamma rays (> 200 keV) remain unsettled.Operated under DOE Contract W-7405-Eng-48.Partially supported by NASA Grant NGR 05-020-668.NRC/NRL Research Associate.  相似文献

We present long-term (1969–1979) observations of Cygnus X-3, obtained by the Vela 5B satellite. The 3–12 keV light curve has 10 day time resolution. Cyg X-3 is a peculiar high-luminosity X-ray source, radiating from the radio region to hard gamma rays of more than 1016 eV. It has a 4.8 hour period, probably orbital, which is not resolved by our present analysis. Long term periodicities of 17, 20, and 33–34 days have been reported by several authors, and explained as the effects of apsidal motion, precession, or an eccentric orbit. We do not observe the 17 and 33–34 day variations, and set upper limits significantly lower than the reported amplitude of the 33–34 day variation. There is weak evidence for a 20 day flux variation. The light curve shows high and low states which alternate with a characteristic timescale of 1 year. There is no counterpart, at this time resolution, of the giant radio outburst of 1972 September.  相似文献
