In this work I will try to give the most general complete view, comparatively with the conciseness, on RU Lupi, which is an Extreme Classical T Tauri star.T Tauri stars (TTSs) form a class of low luminosity stars which are going to the Main Sequence. They are young contracting objects that are in a particular Pre-Main-Sequence (PMS) evolutionary phase. The study of the Pre-Main-Sequence Stars (PMSSs) can provide crucial information on stellar evolution and formation of planetary systems, and therefore also indirect information on the processes occurred in the primeval solar system. For this reason, firstly I will briefly comment a sort of classification of stars in PMS phases (Section 2); then I will emphasize the main characteristics of TTSs and the current theories (Section 3). The up-to-date observational properties of RU Lupi (Section 4) and a discussion on their explanation within the framework of theories (Section 5) will allow me to draw the conclusions (Section 6) and to argue the most convenient line of investigation (Section 7) both experimental and theoretical for a better understanding of the underlying physics of these systems. Finally (Section 8), I will comment in general on the methodology of investigation of highly variable cosmic sources. An original result has been obtained in this work: the flare-like events (FLEs) of RU Lupi, occurring in all wavelength regions, are periodic with aP FLE=27.686±0.002 days. This periodicity could be the rotational period of the star.  相似文献

EXOSAT has been used to carry out a series of observations of the dwarf nova SS Cygni covering both quiescent and outburst states which provide a detailed picture of its behaviour at X-ray wavelengths. These results provide strong support for a new coronal model for the X-ray emission from non-magnetic white dwarf systems.  相似文献

The advent of the grating spectrometers onboard Chandra and XMM-Newton opened up a new era in plasma diagnostics of compact binaries. High resolution spectroscopy using these spectrometers is of particular use in investigating accretion plasmas in cataclysmic variables (CVs) because they show a wealth of emission lines owing to their optically thin thermal nature. In this review, I present recent progress on density measurements of the plasma in magnetic CVs by means of He-like triplet and iron L lines, and the outcome of line velocity measurements in the dwarf nova SS Cygni in outburst, to demonstrate the potential power of high resolution spectroscopy to elucidate the geometry of the plasma. In the end, our expectations for the Soft X-ray Spectrometer onboard the forthcoming X-ray mission Astro-H are summarized.  相似文献

High speed photometry of the dwarf nova SS Cygni during an outburst reveals the presence of rapid oscillations detected over an interval of four days. The period of the oscillations ranged from a maximum of 9.91 s to a minimum of 8.96 s. The results are discussed from the view point of several current models.  相似文献

In this paper we describe and discuss the occurrence of natural wave emissions detected by GEOS-1 at frequencies above the electron gyrofrequency. The bulk of the data presented comes from the first six months of satellite operation and thus concerns mainly dayside phenomena. The paper is arranged as follows:After some general remarks, a classification of the wave phenomena is developed in Section 2, and experimental evidence and morphological information relevant to this classification are contained in Section 3. Section 4 includes some preliminary comments on nightside observations. The results are discussed in Section 5, where it is argued that they can be understood as manifestations of electron cyclotron harmonic (Bernstein) wave emission in a plasma parameter range which has only very recently received any theoretical examinations. This theme is further developed in a comparison paper (Ronnmark et al., 1978).  相似文献

Type III bursts
One of the purposes of this paper is to stress the fact that the solar type III radio burst is not the simple phenomenon it is sometimes suggested to be. Therefore we present in sections 1 to 7 its various properties derived from observations of the past 20 years. In Section 2 a few theories invoked to describe the basic features are reviewed. This may serve as an introduction to the subject.  相似文献

This work is concerned with binary systems that we call ‘moderately close’. These are systems in which the primary (by which we mean the initially more massive star) fills its Roche lobe when it is on the giant branch with a deep convective envelope but before helium ignition (late case B). We find that if the mass ratio q(= M 1/M 2) < q crit = 0.7 when the primary fills its Roche lobe positive feedback will lead to a rapid hydrodynamic phase of mass transfer which will probably lead to common envelope evolution and thence to either coalescence or possibly to a close binary in a planetary nebula. Although most Algols have probably filled their Roche lobes before evolving off the main-sequence we find that some could not have and are therefore ‘moderately close’. Since rapid overflow is unlikely to lead to an Algol-like system there must be some way of avoiding it. The most likely possibility is that the primary can lose sufficient mass to reduce q below q crit before overflow begins. Ordinary mass loss rates are insufficient but evidence that enhanced mass loss does take place is provided by RS CVn systems that have inverted mass ratios but have not yet begun mass transfer. We postulate that the cause of enhanced mass loss lies in the heating of the corona by by magnetic fields maintained by an αω dynamo which is enhanced by tidal effects associated with corotation. In order to model the the effects of enhanced mass loss we ignore the details and adopt an empirical approach calibrating a simple formula with the RS CVn system Z Her. Using further empirical relations (deduced from detailed stellar models) that describe the evolution of red giants we have investigated the effect on a large number of systems of various initial mass ratios and periods. These are notable in that some systems can now enter a much gentler Algol-like overflow phase and others are prevented from transferring mass altogether. We have also investigated the effects of enhanced angular momentum loss induced by corotation of the wind in the strong magnetic fields and consider this in relation to observed period changes. We find that a typical ‘moderately close’ Algol-like system evolves through an RS CVn like system and then possibly a symbiotic state before becoming an Algol and then goes on through a red giant-white dwarf state which may become symbiotic before ending up as a double white dwarf system in either a close or wide orbit depending on how much mass is lost before the secondary fills its Roche lobe.  相似文献

This paper is a review of our observational knowledge on solar magnetic fields. In Section 1 we make an attempt to summarize all observations of the general magnetic field (m.f.) of the Sun. Section 2 deals with the local m.f. at low latitudes and their connection with some features on the disk. The m.f. of sunspots and their peculiar character are considered in Section 3. The last section (4) is concerned with m.f. in sunspot groups, their changes and connections with solar activity.  相似文献

Geomagnetic and auroral storms provide a great deal of detailed information on the interaction between the solar plasma flows and the magnetosphere. Vast numbers of observations have been accumulated, and many theories have been developed to explain them. However, many of the most vital features of the interaction remain unsolved. The purpose of this paper is to provide the background for future work by summarizing fundamental morphological data and by reviewing critically the proposed theories. The paper consists of four sections. In the first section, the structure of the solar plasma flows and the magnetosphere are briefly discussed. Effects of the direct impact of the plasma flows on the magnetosphere are described in Section 2. Both Sections 3 and 4 are devoted to the discussion of the major phase of geomagnetic storms, namely the formation of the asymmetric ring current belt and the development of the auroral and polar magnetic substorms, respectively.Research supported in part by grants from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration to the University of Alaska (NsG 201-62) and to the University of Iowa (NsG 233-62).  相似文献

This review is devoted to ponderomotive forces and their importance for the acceleration of charged particles by electromagnetic waves in space plasmas. Ponderomotive forces constitute time-averaged nonlinear forces acting on a media in the presence of oscillating electromagnetic fields. Ponderomotive forces represent a useful analytical tool to describe plasma acceleration. Oscillating electromagnetic fields are also related with dissipative processes, such as heating of particles. Dissipative processes are, however, left outside these discussions. The focus will be entirely on the (conservative) ponderomotive forces acting in space plasmas. The review consists of seven sections. In Section 1, we explain the rational for using the auxiliary ponderomotive forces instead of the fundamental Lorentz force for the study of particle motions in oscillating fields. In Section 2, we present the Abraham, Miller, Lundin–Hultqvist and Barlow ponderomotive forces, and the Bolotovsky–Serov ponderomotive drift. The hydrodynamic, quasi-hydrodynamic, and ‘`test-particle’' approaches are used for the study of ponderomotive wave-particle interaction. The problems of self-consistency and regularization are discussed in Section 3. The model of static balance of forces (Section 4) exemplifies the interplay between thermal, gravitational and ponderomotive forces, but it also introduces a set of useful definitions, dimensionless parameters, etc. We analyze the Alfvén and ion cyclotron waves in static limit with emphasis on the specific distinction between traveling and standing waves. Particular attention has been given to the impact of traveling Alfvén waves on the steady state anabatic wind that blows over the polar regions (Section~5). We demonstrate the existence of a wave-induced cold anabatic wind. We also show that, at a critical point, the ponderomotive acceleration of the wind is a factor of 3 greater than the thermal acceleration. Section 6 demonstrates various manifestations of ponderomotive forces in the Earth's magnetosphere, for instance the ionospheric plasma acceleration and outflow. The polar wind and the auroral density cavities are considered in relation to results from the Freja and Viking satellites. The high-altitude energization and escape of ions is discussed. The ponderomotive anharmonicity of standing Alfvén waves is analyzed from ground based ULF wave measurements. The complexity of the many challenging problems related with plasma processes near the magnetospheric boundaries is discussed in the light of recent Cluster observations. At the end of Section 6, we consider the application of ponderomotive forces to the diversity of phenomena on the Sun, in the interstellar environment, on newborn stars, pulsars and active galaxies. We emphasize the role of forcing of magnetized plasmas in general and ponderomotive forcing in particular, presenting some simple conceivable scenarios for massive outflow and jets from astrophysical objects.  相似文献

The present understanding of cometary ionospheres and plasma tails is critically evaluated. Following a brief introduction of the significance of the study of cometary ionospheres and tails (Section 1), the observational statistics and spectroscopic observations are summarized in Sections 2 and 3.The complicated and time varying morphology of the plasma tail and the ionosphere as revealed both by photographs as well as visual drawings is discussed in Section 4.The evidence for a strong comet-solar wind interaction, the possible nature of this interaction and also the use of comets as probes of the solar wind are considered in the next 3 sections (5, 6, 7). This is followed by a discussion of the various processes so far proposed for the ionization of cometary gases and their limitations (Section 8).Hydrodynamic models of the solar wind-comet interaction, which refers essentially to the region outside the tangential discontinuity, are presented and evaluated in Section 9. A discussion of the ion chemistry and structure of the region inside the tangential discontinuity (which is here referred to as the cometary ionosphere) follows in Section 10.The largely indirect evidence for the existence of substantial magnetic fields in cometary ionospheres and type 1 tails is evaluated and their likely origin is considered in Section 11. The associated electric currents; their size and closure as well as their importance as sources of ionization in the inner coma are also discussed. Finally in Section 12, some of the directions in which future research should progress, in order to provide a more complete and secure knowledge of cometary ionospheres and plasma tails, are stressed.  相似文献

CIVA
CIVA (Comet Infrared and Visible Analyser) is an integrated set of imaging instruments, designed to characterize the 360 panorama (CIVA-P) as seen from the Rosetta Lander Philae, and to study surface and subsurface samples (CIVA-M). CIVA-P is a panoramic stereo camera, while CIVA-M is an optical microscope coupled to a near infrared microscopic hyperspectral imager. CIVA shares a common Imaging Main Electronics (IME) with ROLIS. CIVA-P will characterize the landing site, with an angular sampling (IFOV) of 1.1 mrad: each pixel will image a 1 mm size feature at the distance of the landing legs, and a few metres at the local horizon. The panorama will be mapped by 6 identical miniaturized micro-cameras covering contiguous FOV, with their optical axis 60 apart. Stereoscopic capability will be provided by an additional micro-camera, identical to and co-aligned with one of the panoramic micro-camera, with its optical axis displaced by 10 cm. CIVA-M combines two ultra-compact and miniaturised microscopes, one operating in the visible and one constituting an IR hyperspectral imaging spectrometer: they will characterize, by non-destructive analyses, the texture, the albedo, the molecular and the mineralogical composition of each of the samples provided by the Sample Drill and Distribution (SD2) system. For the optical microscope, the spatial sampling is 7 μm; for the IR, the spectral range (1–4 μm) and the spectral sampling (5 nm) have been chosen to allow identification of most minerals, ices and organics, on each pixel, 40 μm in size. After being studied by CIVA, the sample could be analysed by a subsequent experiment (PTOLEMY and/or COSAC). The process would be repeated for each sample obtained at different depths and/or locations.  相似文献

In this paper we consider those processes mainly related to the behaviour of the low-energetic magnetospheric plasma, which nevertheless contains the main mass and the predominant part of the thermal energy. Our attention has been concentrated on those processes which, from our point of view, determine geomagnetic phenomena on the surface of the earth. Because of the scope of the project, we had to exclude the processes of acceleration of high-energetic particles in the tail of the magnetosphere, their diffusion deep within, and the formation of the radiation belts. These problems are of independent interest and may be considered separately. When describing various phenomena we tried to stress the principal side of a question without regard to the details of one theory or other, though we did not keep to this principle throughout. Together with the results which are dealt with in the literature, we took the risk of including those considerations which are not as yet published. It mainly concerns Sections 2.3, 2.4, 3.4, 3.6, 3.7, and 4. where, together with other problems, three new hypotheses of the main phase of a storm and of Sq-variations are discussed. We prefer the mechanism connected with the current induction in the ionosphere (Section 4.4). For this purpose some aspects of magnetohydrodynamics were examined (Section 4.3).  相似文献

A review of the theoretical problems associated with preflare magnetic energy storage and conversion is presented. The review consists of three parts; preflare magnetic energy storage, magnetic energy conversion mechanisms, and preflare triggers. In Section 2, the relationship between magnetic energy storage and the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere is developed. By accounting for the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere, we are able to examine the fundamental problems associated with the concept of in situ versus remote magnetic-energy storage. Furthermore, this approach permits us to distinguish between the roles of local and global parameters in the storage process.Section 3 is focused on the conversion mechanisms that can explain, in principle, the rapid energy release of a flare. In addition, we discuss how electrodynamic coupling eventually dictates which mechanism(s) is responsible for releasing the stored magnetic energy, and how the global coupling dictates the final evolution of the relevant mechanism. Section 4 examines preflare triggers and Section 5, we examine the most promising directions for future research into the problem of magnetic-energy storage and conversion of the Sun.  相似文献

P Cygni is a prototype for understanding mass loss from massive stars. This textbook star is known first of all because of two great eruptions in the 17th century. In the first half of this century it has given its name to a class of stars which are characterized by spectral lines consisting of nearly undisplaced emissions accompanied by a blue-displaced absorption component. This characteristic P Cygni-type profile betrays the presence of a stellar wind, but P Cygni's wind is quite unlike that of other hot supergiants. P Cygni was the first star that showed the effects of stellar evoluton from a study of its photometric history. It shares some common properties with the so-called Luminous Blue Variables. However, P Cygni is a unique object. This review deals with P Cygni's photometric properties, its circumstellar environment - including infrared and radio observations - and its optical and ultraviolet spectrum. Smaller sections deal with P Cygni's wind structure and evolution. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

This paper describes Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) which is a Japanese contribution to International Space Station (SS) Program. First half of phase B study of JEM was completed last March successfully. JEM primary function and basic configuration has been established. JEM consists of a Pressurized Module (PM), an Exposed Facility (EF), a scientific/equipment airlock, a local remote manipulator, and an Experimental Logistic Module (ELM). With all those hardware elements, JEM will accommodate general scientific and technology development research (some of which are to utilize the advantage of microgravity environment), and also accommodate control panels for the Space Station Mobile Remote Manipulator System and attached payloads.  相似文献

We discuss the historical light curve of the most peculiar superluminous star Car, and the spectroscopic variations during the last 100 y. After the nova-like spectral evolution following the 1889 light maximum, the star underwent many shell episodes which were characterized by a large fading of the higher ionization emission lines. We describe the most recent 1992 event when the Hei and [Nii] emission lines nearly faded out, and a broad P Cygni absorption appeared in the Hi and Hei lines. A recurrence time of about 5 years is suggested from the times of the spectroscopic episodes and the IR light curve. The results are discussed in the light of possible models.  相似文献
