Time-resolved spectroscopy during the eclipse of short-period Algol systems, has shown their accretion disks to be small, turbulent structures with non-Keplerian velocity fields and asymmetries between the leading and trailing sides of the disk. These transient disks are produced by the impact of the gas stream on the mass-gaining star, and occur in systems where the star is just large enough to ensure the stream collision is complete. These emission line disks and the excess continuum emission do not always occur together. The permanent accretion disks in at least a few of the long-period Algol systems have features in common with the transient disks including non-Keplerian velocity fields.  相似文献

A systematic search is reported for phenomena associated with circumstellar matter in interacting binary systems of the Algol and W Serpentis type. Ultraviolet emission lines have been detected by the author in 10 Algols and 6 Serpentids. No conspicuous difference exists between systems with disk accretion and those with direct stream impact. Evidence is indicated that the lines are formed predominantly by scattering in an induced stellar wind. Relative intensity of Fe II and Fe III emissions appears to be correlated with the spectral type of the gainer. It is suggested that in the Serpentids we see a thick disk nearly edge-on, but that the emission lines indicate the nature of the gainer inside.  相似文献

The circumstellar plasma that produces Hα emission in Algol binaries has been investigated using phase-resolved, high dispersion data acquired from CCD and image tube detectors. Results are summarized in this paper, including discussions of the disk geometry and size, asymmetry in the distribution of material, long-term or non-phase dependent variability, mass outflow, the mean electron density, and how the latter properties vary with the system's period or location in the r-q diagram. Five systems which display permanent emission with periods ranging from 4.5 to 261 days (SW Cyg, UX Mon, TT Hya, AD Her, and RZ Oph) are intercompared. If P < 4.5 days, no permanent disks are observed, while if P > 6 days, stable disks with only slight long-term variations in their Hα brightness are seen. The most variable systems appear to be those in the 5 – 6 day range, but the star's position in the r-q diagram has the largest influence on its behavior. The trailing side of the accretion disk, where the gas stream impacts the inner disk, is usually brighter, and the leading side is often times more extended. The disk extends out to at least 95% of the Roche surface of the primary and is highly flattened (≤RP). Mass outflow near phase 0.5 is commonplace.

Summary A multi-year photometric program on long-period eclipsing binaries has begun to uncover some properties of accretion disks in these systems. Emission and transmission properties can sometimes be found from light curve features produced by partial eclipses of the disk by the cool star, and by partial occultations of the cool star by the disk. These disks do not have the classical alpha structure. They are optically thin normal to the orbital plane, but may be geometrically thicker than purely gravitationally-stratified disks. Disk gas may be contaminated by dust particles acquired from the outer layers of the cool loser. In some systems, high states, produced by elevated mass accretion by the hot star, occur, suggesting that the mass distribution in the disk is clumpy. However mass-transfer rates are found, they lie between 10-7 and 10-6 solar masses per year. While this binary sample is small at the moment, some of its properties are shared with other systems. The author has five-color observations of about a dozen additional systems, which may fill out this picture more fully.  相似文献

In this chapter, I present a summary of observational tests of the basic picture of disk accretion. An emphasis is placed on tests relevant to black holes, but many of the fundamental results are drawn from studies of other classes of systems. Evidence is discussed for the basic structures of accretion flows. The cases of systems with and without accretion disks are discussed, as is the evidence that disks actually form. Also discussed are the hot spots where accretion streams impact the disks, and the boundary layers in the inner parts of systems where the accretors are not black holes. The nature of slow, large amplitude variability is discussed. It is shown that some of the key predictions of the classical thermal-viscous ionization instability model for producing outbursts are in excellent agreement with observational results. It is also show that there are systems whose outbursts are extremely difficult to explain without invoking variations in the rate of mass transfer from the donor star into the outer accretion disk, or tidally induced variations in the mass transfer rates. Finally, I briefly discuss recent quasar microlensing measurements which give truly independent constraints on the inner accretion geometry around black holes.  相似文献

A wide class of galactic X-ray sources are believed to be binary systems where mass is flowing from a normal star to a companion that is a compact object, such as a neutron star. The strong magnetic fields of the compact object create a magnetosphere around it. We review the theoretical models developed to describe the properties of magnetospheres in such accreting binary systems. The size of the magnetosphere can be estimated from pressure balance arguments and is found to be small compared to the over-all size of the accretion region but large compared to the compact object if the latter is a neutron star. In the early models the magnetosphere was assumed to have open funnels in the polar regions, through which accreting plasma could pour in. Later, magnetically closed models were developed, with plasma entry made possible by instabilities at the magnetosphere boundary. The theory of plasma flow inside the magnetosphere has been formulated in analogy to a stellar wind with reversed flow; a complicating factor is the instability of the Alfvén critical point for inflow. In the case of accretion via a well-defined disk, new problems of magnetospheric structure appear, in particular the question to what extent and by what process the magnetic fields from the compact object can penetrate into the accretion disk. Since the X-ray emission is powered by the gravitational energy released in the accretion process, mass transfer into the magnetosphere is of fundamental importance; the various proposed mechanisms are critically examined.Proceedings of the NASA/JPL Workshop on the Physics of Planetary and Astrophysical Magnetospheres.  相似文献

We review the long term variability properties of accretion powered X-ray pulsars in massive Pop. I binary systems and discuss how their characteristics, in particular the large dynamic range in luminosity of the transient pulsars, can be understood in terms of the interaction of the accreting material with the neutron star magnetosphere. We point out that the X-ray pulsar transient activity in general can be due to the transition between direct wind accretion and a regime in which the centrifugal drag exerted by the pulsar magnetosphere inhibits accretion onto the neutron star surface.  相似文献

Evidence on the issues of whether the W Serpentis stars are a coherent class, and how they may interface with the Algol systems, is reviewed, with emphasis on the idea that they are semi-detached systems in the latter part of the rapid phase of mass transfer, with optically and geometrically thick disks of transferred gas around the (now) more massive star. We are interested in what will be seen when the gas clears away, and mainly examine the idea that it will be an Algol-type system. More particularly, consideration is given to centrifugally limited accretion as a mechanism to build up a substantial disk, and the presumed evolutionary sequence is from a W Ser to a rapidly rotating Algol to a normal Algol system. Systems such as V367 Cyg and RW Tau fit into this scheme only with difficulty. Because it is extremely difficult to measure the rotation of some W Ser (mass) primaries, it is natural to look at the rotation statistics of Algols to test this idea. The badly behaved light curves and spectroscopy of some Algols (eg. U Cep, RZ Sct) may be attributable to the double contact condition, and the ramifications of this possibility are discussed. If so, the rotation statistics of Algols should show two spikes, corresponding to the two special conditions into which a system should be driven by tidal braking and centrifugally limited spinup. Present rotation statistics do show these spikes. Algols should flip between these states fairly quickly, depending on the mass transfer rate. Thus, to the extent that the meager statistics can be accepted as meaningful, the new (fourth) morphological type of close binary (double contact) has attained demonstrable reality. The rotation statistics are presented in terms of a particular rotation parameter, R, which is zero for synchronism and unity for the centrifugal limit. Future work should develop rotation statistics to see if the rotational lobe-filling (R = 1) spike persists. It should also look into whether W Ser primaries are on the hydrogen burning main sequence, or in general what they are. We also need more light curves of W Ser type systems, high resolution line profiles for the (mass) primaries (with particular attention to the W Ser-Algol transition cases), and spectroscopy of low inclination W Serpentis systems, such as KX And.  相似文献

Variations in the magnetic pressure and flux blocking by starspots during the magnetic cycle of the cool semidetached component of an Algol binary may cause cyclic changes in the quadrupole moment and moment of inertia of the star which can cause alternate period changes. Since several different processes and timescales are involved, the orbital period changes may not correlate strongly with the indicators of magnetic activity. The structural changes in the semidetached component can also modulate the mass transfer rate. Sub-Keplerian velocities, supersonic turbulence, and high temperature regions in circumstellar material around the accreting star may all be a consequence of magnetic fields embedded in the flow. Models for the evolution of Algols which include the effects of angular momentum loss (AML) through a magnetized wind may have underestimated the AML rate by basing it on results from main sequence stars. Evolved stars appear to have higher AML rates, and there may be additional AML in a wind from the accretion disk.  相似文献

This review presents an introduction to the theory of accretion disks. After explaining the importance of accretion disks in stellar X-ray sources, it considers observational and theoretical indications of the formation of accretion disks in close binary systems. The simple Shakura and Sunyaev model and its problems are discussed. A survey of other models that try to improve upon this model is given (in Table III), and critically discussed.  相似文献

Late-type secondaries in Algol binaries are rapidly rotating convective stars and thus should be chromospherically active (CA). They are examined with respect to observational manifestations which characterize already known CA stars: Ca II H and K emission cores, photometric variability attributable to starspots, soft x-ray emission, non-thermal radio emission, ultraviolet and infrared excess, and alternating period changes. The conclusion is that they can be regarded as another class of CA stars. In most respects they are literally indistinguishable from other CA stars. Ca II H and K emission cores are observed in the lobe-filling component of six semi-detached binaries: U Cep, RT Lac, RV Lib, AR Mon, S Vel, HR 5110. Alternating period changes are shown to occur only in Algols containing a late-type (convective) star. It is proposed, therefore, that the Matese-Whitmire mechanism explains these changes. Specifically, the interval from one increase (or decrease) to the next can be equated with the star's magnetic cycle. Cycle lengths for 31 stars, derived in this way, range between 7 years and 109 years, with a median of 50 years.  相似文献

The present knowledge of the structure of low-mass X-ray binary systems is reviewed. We examine the orbital period distribution of these sources and discuss how the orbital periods are measured. There is substantial observational evidence that the accretion disks in low-mass X-ray binaries are thick and structured. In a number of highly inclined systems, the compact X-ray emitting star is hidden from direct view by the disk and X-radiation is observed from these only because photons are scattered into the line of sight by material above and below the disk plane. In such systems the X-ray emission can appear extended with respect to the companion star, which can lead to partial X-ray eclipses. There are substantial variations in the thickness of the disk rim with azimuth. These give rise to the phenomenon of irregular dips in the X-ray flux which recur with the orbital period, or to an overall binary modulation of the X-ray flux if the source is extended. The X-ray spectra of low-mass X-ray binaries can be used to probe the innermost emission regions surrounding the compact star. The spectra of the bright Sco X-1 variables can be fitted with two components which are provisionally identified as originating in the inner disk and the boundary layer between the disk and the neutron star respectively. The characteristic energy dependent flaring of the Sco X-1 sub-class may be a geometric effect triggered by an increase in the thickness of the inner disk or boundary layer. The X-ray spectra of the lower luminosity systems, including the bursters, are less complex, and in many cases can be represented by a single power law with, in some sources, a high energy cut-off. Iron line emission is a characteristic of most low-mass X-ray binaries, irrespective of luminosity.  相似文献

The B[e] stars are early type stars with hydrogen emission lines, forbidden [FeII] and [OI] emission lines, and with an IR excess due to circumstellar dust. These properties may occur in stars of quite different evolutionary stages. In fact, the group of B[e] stars is very inhomogeneous, and contains pre-main sequence stars, supergiants with disks, compact planetary nebulae, symbiotic stars, and a group of stars with unclear evolutionary phase. The book gives the proceedings of a workshop in Paris in 1997 in which the properties and evolutionary phases of the B[e] stars are discussed. It contains chapters on: (1) the definition of B[e] stars, (2) distances, kinematics and the distribution in our Galaxy, (3) spectroscopy, (4) infrared properties, (5) photometry, polarimetry and variability, (6) models for winds and disks, (7) evolutionary stages, (8) revised classification of B[e] stars. The book ends with an object list of all B[e] stars. The book is very useful for students and researchers of hot star winds and gives nice overviews of the observations and theories and remaining puzzles of these strange objects with winds and outflowing dust-forming disks. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The observed non-thermal emission from accreting compact objects is often understood in terms of the expected magnetic activity of accretion disks. This review discusses the constraints on this view point that can be obtained from, principally, the X-ray spectra and the X-ray variability of black hole candidates.Furthermore, the traditional view of an accretion disk corona, put forward as the source of the non-thermal emission, analogous to the solar corona is shown to be wrong on a few important points. Firstly, the density in the equilibrium accretion disk corona is extremely low. A reasonable plasma density is retained by pair production processes similar to those existing in the pulsar magnetosphere. Secondly, the dominant resistivity in the accretion the disk on the current carrying electrons.  相似文献

Various models are examined, which could give rise to point-like gamma-ray sources, at the present time indistinguishable, experimentally, from true point sources. These models involve energetic processes associated with interstellar clouds, e.g. supernova-cloud interactions, neutron star accretion inside interstellar clouds, cloud collisions, etc. The dynamical evolution of such systems is discussed and physical processes are described in a mathematical framework which can be solved. Statistical arguments are presented, where possible, on the likelihood that the scenarios may actually occur in our Galaxy. The visibility of the systems at other wavelengths, e.g. infrared, X-ray, radio etc., and further consequences, e.g. gamma-ray line emission, special radio emission line features, absorption features etc. are also discussed. Finally, a limited attempt at identification of some gamma-ray objects is made based on the theoretical predictions.Proceedings of the XVIII General Assembly of the IAU: Galactic Astrophysics and Gamma-Ray Astronomy, held at Patras, 19 August 1982.  相似文献
