The Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) Mission is described. The purpose of this mission is to search the celestial sphere for astronomical sources of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation (100–1000Å). The search will be accomplished with the use of three EUV telescopes, each sensitive to different bands within the EUV band. A fourth telescope will perform a high sensitivity search of a limited sample of the sky in a single EUV band. In six months, the entire sky will be scanned at a sensitivity level comparable to existing surveys in other more traditional astronomical bandpasses. A substantial number of EUV sources such as hot white dwarfs and stellar coronae are certain to be discovered given our current knowledge. More uncertain is what entirely new classes of objects will be discovered as EUV sources. A moderate resolution (~ 5Å) spectroscopy option is being considered which would cover the band from 80 to 600Å. This instrument would be capable of providing spectra of at least the 100 brightest EUV sources and would be utilized entirely on a Guest Investigator basis.  相似文献

One of the central mysteries of white dwarf studies has been the nature and abundance of trace elements in the atmospheres of these stars. It had been thought that the dominant trace element in otherwise pure hydrogen DA white dwarf atmospheres was helium. However, some spectroscopic and theoretical evidence suggested that, at least in some stars, heavier elements may be important. Prior to the launch of ROSAT the questions regarding the atmospheric composition of DA white dwarfs in general remained unresolved. The ROSAT mission has provided EUV and X-ray data for a large sample of DA white dwarfs with which we can study their photospheric composition and structure through the effect of trace opacity sources on the emergent fluxes. Contrary to expectations little (if any) helium is found and the main sources of opacity appear to be trace heavy elements. Support for these conclusions is found in recent EUV and far-UV spectra of several stars. However, photometric data do not allow us to determine the abundance of the individual elements and observations with the EUVE spectrometers will be essential for detailed composition measurements.  相似文献

Using data from the Wide Field Camera EUV all-sky survey, we have established upper limits to the EUV flux from a sample of 30 bright, nearby, non-active spiral galaxies. These galaxies were chosen to be those most likely to be detected in the EUV on the basis of (i) low interstellar absorption within our own galaxy, (ii) brightness in other wavebands, (iii) high star formation activity, and (iv) proximity. The derived EUV upper limits are restrictive, and establish for the first time that the EUV flux escaping from galaxies does not constitute a major component of their bolometric luminosity, and in particular that it cannot be the sink for the energy injected into the interstellar medium by supernova explosions, as had been suggested following the failure to detect this power in the X-ray band.  相似文献

The RS CVn stars Capella and σ2 CrB have been measured with EXOSAT in soft and medium X-rays for about 24 hours each and the less active late-type star Procyon for about 6.5 hours. In addition, the RS CVn star γ. And was twice observed about one month apart for a total of about 7 hours, with the ME and the LE in the photometer mode only. All three RS CVn stars were detected with the ME-detector. The star σ2 CrB showed a flare both in LE and ME with a rise time of about twelve minutes and a decay time of three hours. The active late-type stars σ2 CrB and Capella show in the spectral region between 90 and 140 A lines from Fe XVIII to Fe XXIII, which can be resolved with the moderate resolution (Δγ ≈ 5 A) of the spectrometer. These lines are indicative of the presence of hot (≈ 10 MK) plasma like that in a Solar flare. In contrast, the spectrum of the cooler corona of the star Procyon does not show the hot Fe XXII and Fe XXIII lines but instead a blend at 175 A of Fe IX, X and XI lines that are formed in a typically quiet corona of a temperature around 1.5 MK. From the spectral intensities and the additional results of the simultaneous multi-color photometry coronal temperatures and emission measures are derived. There are indications in the spectra that the emission should be interpreted in terms of differential emission measure distribution models.  相似文献

We have measured the strengths of Ca II triplet and Mgb stellar absorption lines in the nuclear and off-nuclear spectra of Seyfert galaxies. These features are diluted to varying degrees by continuum emission from the active nucleus and from young stars. Ca II triplet strengths can be enhanced if late-type supergiant stars dominate the near-IR light. Thus, objects with strong Ca II triplet and weak Mgb lines may be objects with strong bursts of star formation. We find that for most of our sample the line strengths are at least consistent with dilution of a normal galaxy spectrum by a power law continuum, in accord with the standard model for AGN. However, for several Seyferts in our sample, it appears that dilution by a power law continuum cannot simultaneously explain strong Ca II triplet and relatively weak Mgb. Also, these objects occupy the region of the IRAS color-color diagram characteristic of starburst galaxies. In these objects it appears that the optical to near-IR emission is dominated by late-type supergiants produced in a circumnuclear burst of star formation.  相似文献

The observation of EUV emissions of comet Halley and its plasma-gas environment by means of rocket- or satellite-borne resonance absorption cell spectrophotometer devices is planned. The technical outlay of the payload, the estimated EUV intensities, and the scientific objectives of this mission are presented. Due to complete suppression of the geocoronal He I emissions by He I resonance absorption cells, a quantitative identification of the cometary object in the He I 58.4 nm line is possible, if the He/H abundance ratio in the evaporating cometary matter is higher than 4.0 E-4.  相似文献

The plasma density distribution of plasmasphere in the geomagnetic equatorial plane can help us study the magnetosphere like plasmasphere, ionosphere and their kinetics. In this paper, we introduce a new inversion method, GE-ART, to calculate the plasma density distribution in the geomagnetic equatorial plane from the Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) data of IMAGE satellite under the assumption that the plasma density is constant along each geomagnetic field line. The new GE-ART algorithm was derived from the traditional Algebraic Reconstruction Techniques (ART) in Computed Tomography (CT) which was different from the several existing methods. In this new method, each value of the EUV image data was back-projected evenly to the geomagnetic field lines intersected by this EUV sight. A 3-D inversion matrix was produced by the contributions of all the voxels contained in the plasmasphere covered by the EUV sensor. That is, we considered that each value of the EUV image data was relative to the plasma densities of all the voxels passed through by the corresponding EUV radiation, which is the biggest difference to all the existing inversion methods. Finally, the GE-ART algorithm was evaluated by the real EUV data from the IMAGE satellite.  相似文献

The development of significantly improved representations of solar EUV inputs for computer-aided investigations of the terrestrial thermosphere and ionosphere has become attractive particularly for the present solar cycle which has been covered by reasonably complete and continuous EUV observations from the AE-E Satellite. These representations try to satisfy some rather incongruous requirements of spectral detail, regarding (a) the strong wavelength-dependence in the terrestrial atmospheric cross sections of the various types of EUV photon interactions, (b) the great differences in the relative amplitudes of the various types of variations in the full-disk fluxes of solar emissions at different wavelengths, and (c) the persisting desire to use only a small number of daily indices as actual input variables for computational models supposed to cover the entire EUV wavelength range (remembering the great success of empirical thermospheric models using only two indices). These general physical and specific aeronomical demands indeed outline a very difficult task. The present study, based mainly on AE-E satellite observations during 1976–1979, represents an exploratory step, only clarifying some important developmental aspects, without recommending any specific formulations for immediately practicable adoption in aeronomical modelling at this time.  相似文献

An X-ray flare was observed from Algol using the low and medium energy detectors on the European Space Agency's EXOSAT observatory. Spectra obtained during the flare are well fitted by thermal continua while an Fe XXV emission feature was also detected. The strength of this feature indicates a cosmic abundance for iron. The data indicate that the flare occurred in a loop of height approximately 0.25 of the K star radius & with a magnetic field >300 Gauss.  相似文献

在极紫外波段对太阳进行成像观测是研究太阳活动、日冕中等离子体物理特性的重要手段.传统极紫外成像仪或光谱仪无法同时实现高光谱分辨率和大视场的太阳成像.本文设计了一种新型太阳极紫外多谱段成像系统,采用无狭缝光栅分光方式实现了高光谱分辨率和空间分辨率的全日面成像,成像视场可达47',光谱分辨率每像素2×10-3 nm,空间分辨率每像素1.4',全日面时间分辨率优于60s.通过分析谱线的全日面成像图和系统响应,表明成像仪能大范围的观测太阳活动形态演化,为太阳物理研究和空间天气预报提供更完整的观测数据.   相似文献

本文处理分析了EXOSAT卫星对4U1538-524次中能观测资料,并结合其他观测结果对4U1538-52的时间和能谱特性作了分析和解释:中子星自转仍在减慢;能谱为幂律谱,Tenma卫星以后的观测未见Fe发射线;X射线dip现象可解释为一前景星对中子星的遮掩而形成;X射线爆发在不同的轨道位相出现,持续近1小时;在1keV附近似有一发射线。   相似文献

Various FeXII spectroscopic lines in the UV and EUV range have been proved to be ideal diagnostic tools for measuring electron temperature, density and iron abundance in the solar corona. In the framework of the “IRON PROJECT” we have provided improved theoretical calculations of the atomic data required to analyse the intensity of these lines and to apply the results to SOHO (Solar Heliospheric Observatory) observations. Extensive configuration interaction and relativistic effects have been allowed for in the atomic structure computations which have provided energy levels and an extensive set of radiative data. The e-FeXII collisional problem has been tackled with the multichannel R-matrix method, a close-coupling calculation for the determination of electron impact collision strengths. Final results are presented for FeXII thermally averaged collision strengths, for fine-structure forbidden transitions within the ground configuration.  相似文献

Results are presented of an analysis of 83 days of 2–12 keV X-ray observations of Vela X-1 (4U 0900-40) obtained during three separate pointings with the ESA COS-B satellite. The pulsation period is shown to undergo very rapid intrinsic changes, at a rate of up to during intervals of a few days. The lower values of which were previously observed over longer intervals, appear to result from an averaging-out of these rapid changes. It is argued, that the transfer of angular momentum to the neutron star by the accreting matter is very unlikely to be sufficient to explain these pulsation-period changes. An alternative explanation is suggested.  相似文献

On 2010 February 8, the Extreme ultraviolet (EUV) flux variation in 195 Å and flare brightening has been examined in different sizes of active regions by using SOHO/EIT, MDI and Hαα observational data. These three active regions represent a large active region with a sunspot group, a moderate active region without a sunspot and a small region with weak plage in Hαα band respectively. Our study shows that the main full disk EUV flux comes from active regions, especially from large active regions. The sudden increases of EUV flux are corresponding to the EUV flare brightenings. For the large active region, the local EUV 195 Å flux peaks are well correlated to that of the GOES X-ray flux. The EUV 195 Å flux peaking time of M-class flares delay GOES X-ray flux a few minutes. For the moderate active region, the local EUV 195 Å flux is not well correlated to GOES X-ray flux. The EUV 195 Å flare brightenings in the moderate active region appeared in the duration of sudden increase of its own local EUV flux. For the small active region, the local EUV 195  Å flux varied almost independently of the GOES X-ray flux. Our study suggests that for an active region its local EUV 195 Å flux is more closely correlated to the EUV flare brightening than the full disk GOES X-ray flux.  相似文献

An ultraviolet spectrometer, PHEBUS (Probing of Hermean Exosphere by Ultraviolet Spectroscopy) that is loaded onto the Mercury Planetary Orbiter in the BepiColombo mission is under development. The instrument, basically consisting of two spectrophotometers (EUV: 50–150 nm, FUV: 145–330 nm) and one scanning mirror, aims at measuring emission lines from molecules, atoms and ions present in the tenuous atmosphere of Mercury. The detectors employ microchannel plates as 2-D photon-counting devices. In order to enhance the quantum detection efficiencies, the surface of the top microchannel plates of EUV detector is covered with photocathode. This method enables us to identify weak atmospheric signatures such as neon (73.5 nm) and argon (104.8 nm), which could not be detected with conventional detector systems. This paper presents measurements of the performance characteristics of potassium bromide and esium iodide photocathodes, which have been evaluated for use in the EUV channel.  相似文献

In the field of terrestrial climatology the continuous monitoring of the solar irradiance with highest possible accuracy is an important goal. SolACES as a part of the ESA mission SOLAR on the ISS is measuring the short-wavelength solar EUV irradiance from 16–150 nm. This data will be made available to the scientific community to investigate the impact of the solar irradiance variability on the Earth’s climate as well as the thermospheric/ionospheric interactions that are pursued in the TIGER program. Since the successful launch with the shuttle mission STS-122 on February 7th, 2008, SolACES initially recorded the low EUV irradiance during the extended solar activity minimum. Thereafter it has been observing the EUV irradiance during the increasing solar activity with enhanced intensity and changing spectral composition. SolACES consists of three grazing incidence planar grating spectrometers. In addition there are two three-signal ionisation chambers, each with exchangeable band-pass filters to determine the absolute EUV fluxes repeatedly during the mission. One important problem of space-borne instrumentation recording the solar EUV irradiance is the degradation of the spectrometer sensitivity. The two double ionisation chambers of SolACES, which could be re-filled with three different gases for each recording, allow the recalibration of the efficiencies of the three SolACES spectrometers from time to time.  相似文献

The ROSAT data of the hot DA white dwarf HS1234+4811 were analyzed in the framework of three different assumptions for the structure of the white dwarf's atmosphere. It could be excluded that the star has a homogeneously mixed photosphere consisting of helium and hydrogen only, but from ROSAT observations alone it is not possible to decide if the object has a stratified atmosphere with an ultrathin hydrogen layer (MH ≈ 7 · 10−14M) on top of the He envelope or if heavier elements are responsible for the absorption in the soft X-ray region.  相似文献

Data bases and limits of applicability of existing empirical thermospheric models are reviewed by using these models together with solar EUV irradiance data in studying the solar activity effect on composition, density and temperature. For two rather short aeronomy missions of the AEROS A and B satellites solar EUV indices as proposed by Schmidtke are used in comparison with the 10.7 cm solar flux F in determining the solar activity effect in in-situ composition measurements sampled by the same satellites at 250, 310 and 380 km altitude. No advantage of solar EUV indices over F could be determined.  相似文献

A full-sky star identification algorithm based on radial and dynamic cyclic patterns is presented with the aim of solving the “lost-in-space” problem. The dynamic cyclic pattern match is applied with a maximum cumulate comparison method to identify sensor-catalog pairings in initial match, which substantially eliminates the effects of the star position noise, magnitude noise, and false stars. After initial match pairings of stars are obtained, a chain part extension technique is employed to quickly search for the longest match chain as the final result. Experimental results indicate that the proposed algorithm is highly robust to star position noise, magnitude noise and false stars. In a series of simulations, the identification rate of the algorithm is 97.50% with 2.0 pixels star position noise, 96.90% with 0.4 Mv star magnitude noise and 95.30% with four false stars respectively. Moreover, the algorithm achieves an identification rate of 58.08% when only six stars are in the field of view.  相似文献

Most, but not all, theoretical models of X-ray bursters require a binary system consisting of a mass donating star and a neutron star. The observational evidence in support of this model, however, is both indirect and meager. We have detected absorption dips in the X-ray spectrum of the Burster MXB 1916-05 with the IPC and the MPC on the Einstein Observatory which occur with a binary period of 2985 seconds. These dips are shown to be the result of a gas stream emanating from a companion star and hence this data represents the first direct evidence of the binary nature of X-ray bursters. Detailed models of the interaction of the gas stream with the accretion disk are presented. A 22nd mag. optical candidate for the system has been found.  相似文献
