Over that past twelve years, global long duration balloon (LDB) missions have provided scientists an observation platform that offers tremendous opportunity for accomplishing monumental science. The precedence of several years of highly successful LDB missions and the capability to recover and re-fly such instruments within a relatively short period of time has created even greater demands for serving science missions in 2004 and beyond. To address NASA’s strategic plans for more missions and longer durations, new concepts are being explored and some are currently being developed, in order to enhance the current LDB mission concept.  相似文献

An example of the use of a vertically piloted gas balloon for nitrogen dioxide diurnal variation search is presented. Since the 1950s, efforts have been made to optimise the design of zero-pressure balloons. A possible method for improving on the classical natural-shape is discussed in this paper.It is shown by surface element analysis, that the meridional stress in the balloon film can be adjusted by changing the circumferential stress. It is probable that the stress concentration at the top of a natural-shape balloon can be reduced. A mixed-shape balloon, which has positive circumferential stress above the maximum diameter, has been derived and the results are presented in a form similar to Smalley's ‘sigma’ table.The stress distribution for balloons having different shapes, with or without load tapes, are also described.  相似文献

This paper presents a computational study of the stability of simple lobed balloon structures. Two approaches are presented, one based on a wrinkled material model and one based on a variable Poisson’s ratio model that eliminates compressive stresses iteratively. The first approach is used to investigate the stability of both a single isotensoid and a stack of four isotensoids, for perturbations of infinitesimally small amplitude. It is found that both structures are stable for global deformation modes, but unstable for local modes at sufficiently large pressure. Both structures are stable at any pressure if an isotropic model is assumed. The second approach is used to investigate the stability of the isotensoid stack for large shape perturbations, taking into account contact between different surfaces. For this structure a distorted, stable configuration is found. It is also found that the volume enclosed by this configuration is smaller than that enclosed by the undistorted structure.  相似文献

In order to provide scientists with a stratospheric platform from which to conduct long duration research, a superpressure balloon is desired which will maintain a relatively constant volume for weeks at a time. The pumpkin shaped balloon has been developed by making use of the surface lobing to limit the circumferential stress and meridional tendons to carry the loads in the other direction. However, in order to prevent geometric instabilities during deployment and after pressurization, the design should eliminate as much excess material as possible while not exceeding the permissible stresses of the material. This paper will describe the behavior of the very thin membrane material selected for this application and the limits of the film in a biaxial state of stress. In addition, it is shown that the viscoelastic nature of the film will limit the stress by causing a reduced radius of curvature in the lobe of the pumpkin.  相似文献

The geometry of a large axisymmetric balloon with positive differential pressure, such as a sphere, leads to very high film stresses. These stresses can be significantly reduced by using a tendon re-enforced lobed pumpkin-like shape. A number of schemes have been proposed to achieve a cyclically symmetric pumpkin shape, including the constant bulge angle (CBA) design, the constant bulge radius (CBR) design, CBA/CBR hybrids, and NASA’s recent constant stress (CS) design. Utilizing a hybrid CBA/CBR pumpkin design, Flight 555-NT in June 2006 formed an S-cleft and was unable to fully deploy. In order to better understand the S-cleft phenomenon, a series of inflation tests involving four 27-m diameter 200-gore pumpkin balloons were conducted in 2007. One of the test vehicles was a 1/3-scale mockup of the Flight 555-NT balloon. Using an inflation procedure intended to mimic ascent, the 1/3-scale mockup developed an S-cleft feature strikingly similar to the one observed in Flight 555-NT. Our analysis of the 1/3-scale mockup found it to be unstable. We compute asymmetric equilibrium configurations of this balloon, including shapes with an S-cleft feature.  相似文献

The region of the electromagnetic spectrum between 15 keV and 300 keV is the first high energy photon band available to the astronomer at balloon altitudes. It also represents the point at which a change in experimental technique is required since grazing incidence X-ray mirrors, and, apart from the use of xenon, gas proportional counters become impracticable Thin, actively shielded sodium iodide detectors form the mainstream X-ray detection units. Directionality is achieved by means of honeycomb and modulation collimators. However as suitable position sensitive planes are developed it is possible to anticipate the increasing usage of the coded aperture mask as the key element for fine angular imaging. Balloon-borne hard X-ray telescopes tend to deploy larger sensitive areas than their satellite cousins, and for this reason, with suitably fast timing of the data, may be used to study the classes of objects which exhibit rapid temporal X-ray intensity variations. Spectral studies are also of great astrophysical importance in this range. Apart from the interest in neutron star line emissions, observations in the soft X-ray region have invariably left doubts as to the true nature of the local production mechanisms for specific objects, this is due to the lack of precise definition of the spectral shape of the emissions, particularly at higher photon energies experimental techniques. The usage of balloons and related astrophysical problems are reviewed.  相似文献

The lobes of the NASA ULDB pumpkin-shaped super-pressure balloons are made of a thin polymeric film that shows considerable time-dependent behaviour. A nonlinear viscoelastic model based on experimental measurements has been recently established for this film. This paper presents a simulation of the viscoelastic behaviour of ULDB balloons with the finite element software ABAQUS. First, the standard viscoelastic modelling capabilities available in ABAQUS are examined, but are found of limited accuracy even for the case of simple uniaxial creep tests on ULDB films. Then, a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model is implemented by means of a user-defined subroutine. This approach is verified by means of biaxial creep experiments on pressurized cylinders and is found to be accurate provided that the film anisotropy is also included in the model. A preliminary set of predictions for a single lobe of a ULDB is presented at the end of the paper. It indicates that time-dependent effects in a balloon structure can lead to significant stress redistribution and large increases in the transverse strains in the lobes.  相似文献

NASA’s development of a large payload, high altitude, long duration balloon, the Ultra Long Duration Balloon, centers on a pumpkin shape super-pressure design. Under certain circumstances, it has been observed that a pumpkin balloon may be unable to pressurize into the desired cyclically symmetric equilibrium configuration, settling into a distorted, undesired state instead. Success of the pumpkin balloon for NASA requires a thorough understanding of the phenomenon of multiple stable equilibria and developing of means for the quantitative assessment of design measures that prevent the occurrence of undesired equilibrium. In this paper, we will use the concept of stability to classify cyclically symmetric equilibrium states at full inflation and pressurization. Our mathematical model for a strained equilibrium balloon, when applied to a shape that mimics the Phase IV-A balloon of Flight 517, predicts instability at float. Launched in Spring 2003, this pumpkin balloon failed to deploy properly. Observations on pumpkin shape type super-pressure balloons that date back to the 1980s suggest that within a narrowly defined design class of pumpkin shape super-pressure balloons where individual designs are fully described by the number of gores ng and by a single measure of the bulging gore shape, the designs tend to become more vulnerable with the growing number of gores and with the diminishing size of the bulge radius rB Weight efficiency considerations favor a small bulge radius, while robust deployment into the desired cyclically symmetrical configuration becomes more likely with an increased bulge radius. In an effort to quantify this dependency, we will explore the stability of a family of balloon shapes parametrized by (ng, rB) which includes a design that is very similar, but not identical, to the balloon of Flight 517. In addition, we carry out a number of simulations that demonstrate other aspects related to multiple equilibria of pumpkin balloons.  相似文献

The radiation spectra of the ionosphere in the 4–5 μm region have been determined from stratospheric balloons by means of the specially elaborated method of the registration of angular and spectral distribution of the radiation. The radiation bands of 4.4 μm and 4.8 μm which have 0.1–0.2 erg cm?2 sr?1s?1. brightness obtained in two flights, are identified with the vibration-rotation transitions of the ion NO+ (0 - 1) and the molecules N14N15 (0 - 1) and CO (0 - 1) and (3 - 2) from altitudes between 120 and 500 km.  相似文献

The measurement of plant chlorophyll fluorescence has been used for many years as a method to monitor a plant's health status. These types of methods have been mostly relegated to the laboratory. The newly developed Relative Referencing Method allows for the measurement of chlorophyll fluorescence under artificial lighting conditions. The fluorescence signal can be determined by first taking a reference signal measurement, then a second measurement with an additional fluorescence excitation source. The first signal can then be subtracted from the second and the plant's chlorophyll fluorescence due to the second lighting source can be determined. With this simple approach, a photosynthesizing plant can be monitored to detect signs of water stress. Using this approach experiments on tomato plants have shown that it was possible to detect water stress, while the plants were continuously illuminated by fluorescent lamps. This method is a promising tool for the remote monitoring of crops grown in a CELSS-type application.  相似文献

The Michelson Interferometer for Passive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) is a high-resolution limb sounder on board the European polar platform ENVISAT, scheduled to be launched in 2001. A large number of atmospheric trace gases relevant to stratospheric ozone chemistry and global change are expected to be retrieved from the IR spectra covering a wide spectral range. While operational data analysis under responsibility of the European Space Agency is limited to conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE), the analysis of limb radiances affected by non-LTE is left to scientific institutions. In this paper we present an innovative non-LTE retrieval method as part of the MIPAS semi-operational data processor developed at the Institut für Meteorologie und Klimaforschung (IMK). The new approach enables the treatment of vibrational, rotational, and spin non-LTE as well as a dependence of the non-LTE state distribution on the retrieval target quantities. In a case study, the method has been tested for its application to the non-LTE analysis of 5.3 μm MIPAS radiances. The fundamental ro-vibrational band of nitric oxide emitting at 5.3 μm shows strong non-LTE effects arising from vibrational excitation of stratospheric NO and superposed thermospheric non-LTE emissions. A conventional non-LTE retrieval approach using ab initio vibrational temperatures of NO cannot be applied due to rotational and spin non-LTE in the thermosphere, and the dependence of stratospheric vibrational temperatures on the NO abundance itself. The ability of the developed non-LTE inversion tool to retrieve stratospheric NO abundances is demonstrated by retrieval simulations. The further application of this method to the simultaneous retrieval of NO and kinetic temperature in the thermosphere and the retrieval of important non-LTE process parameters has also been tested.  相似文献

Solar energetic protons degrade performance and reliability of spacecraft systems due to single-event effects, total dose effects and displacement damage in electronics components including solar cells. On designing a solar cell panel, a total fluence of solar energetic protons (SEPs) which cause solar cell damage is needed to estimate power loss of the solar cells over mission life. Nowadays a solar panel area of spacecraft is increasing as spacecraft mission life becomes longer (15–18 years). Thus an accurate SEP model is strongly required for the cost-minimum design from the aerospace industry. The SEP model, JPL-91 proposed by Feynman et al., is currently used widely for solar cell designing. However, it is known that the JPL-91 model predicts higher fluences of protons than values actually experienced in space, especially after 7 years on orbit. In addition, the model is based on several assumptions, and also needs Monte-Carlo simulations for calculating fluences. In this study, we propose a new method for modeling SEPs especially focused on solar cell degradation. The newly-proposed method is empirical, which constructs a model based directly upon proton flux measurement data taken by instruments onboard spacecraft. This method has neither assumptions nor dependence on SEP event selection, both of which are needed in JPL-91. The model fluences derived from this method show lower fluences in longer missions compared to JPL-91. This method has been proposed to ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and has been discussed for a new standard SEP model.  相似文献

The design and operation of a high altitude scientific balloon requires adequate knowledge of the thermal characteristics of the balloon to make it safe and reliable. The thermal models and dynamic models of altitude scientific balloons are established in this paper. Based on the models, a simulation program is developed. The thermal performances of a super pressure balloon are simulated. The influence of film radiation property and clouds on balloon thermal behaviors is discussed in detail. The results are helpful for the design and operate of safe and reliable high altitude scientific balloons.  相似文献

Balloon platforms are becoming more and more reliable as carriers of infrared and UV equipment. The balloon environment offers conditions of lower emissivity and higher transparency of the atmosphere. Precise photometric and spectroscopic measurements can be made in all spectral interval exceeding 1950 Å. Stabilized and unexpensive gondola are now available. Thus, high and low resolution spectra can be obtained for numerous stars. Accurate UV-multiband photometry and spectrophotometry are possible for stars members of large galactic clusters. A stabilized astronomical gondola was carrying a Schmidt photographic camera with UV microchannel plate image converter-intensifier. Systematic surveys of the galactic plane and the galactic poles are in progress. The quality of the UV image is good enough to allow a fine morphological analysis of the large galaxies, to detect a large number of nuclei of galaxies and nebulosities.  相似文献

Development of a balloon to fly at higher altitudes is one of the most attractive challenges in scientific balloon technologies. After reaching the highest record setting balloon altitude of 53.0 km using the 3.4 μm film in 2002, we tried to make a thinner balloon film. In 2003, we developed a forming die and an air-ring and succeeded in forming a film with a thickness of 3.0 μm and a width of 220 cm. Using this film, we manufactured a balloon with a volume of 5000 m3 and succeeded in flying the balloon up to an altitude of 46.0 km. We then searched for a good combination of resins to make a thinner and wider film and obtained films with widths of 280 cm, and a thickness of 3.0 μm at first, and then 2.8 μm. In 2004, we performed balloon experiments making a 30,000 m3 balloon with the 3.0 μm film and a 5000 m3 balloon with the 2.8 μm film. Both balloons were well manufactured and reached the highest altitudes of 50.7 and 42.6 km, respectively.  相似文献
