The basic physical processes that lead to the long-term modulation of cosmic rays by the solar wind have been known for many years. However our knowledge of the structure of the heliosphere, which determines which processes are most important for the modulation, and of the variation of this structure with time and solar activity level is still incomplete. Study of the modulation provides a tool for probing the scale and structure of the heliosphere. While the Pioneer and Voyager spacecraft are surveying the radial structure and extent of the heliosphere at modest heliographic latitudes, theUlysses mission is the first to undertake a nearly complete scan of the latitudinal structure of the modulated cosmic ray intensity in the inner heliosphere (R<5.4 AU).Ulysses will reach latitudes of 80°S in September 1994 and 80°N in July 1995 during the approach to minimum activity in the 11 year solar cycle. We present a first report of measurements extending to latitudes of 52°S, which show surprisingly little latitudinal effect in the modulated intensities and suggest that at this time modulation in the inner heliosphere may be much more spherically symmetric than had generally been believed based upon models and previous observations.  相似文献

Our picture of modulation in the inner heliosphere has been greatly affected by observations from the Ulysses mission, which since 1992 has provided the first comprehensive exploration of modulation as a function of latitude from 80° S to 80° N heliographic latitude. Among the principal findings for the inner heliosphere are: a) the cosmic ray intensity depends only weakly on heliographic latitude; b) for the nuclear components, and especially for the anomalous components, the intensity increases towards the poles, qualitatively consistent with predictions of drift models for the current sign of the solar magnetic dipole; c) no change in the level of modulation was observed across the shear layer separating fast polar from slow equatorial solar wind near 1 AU; d) 26-day recurrent variations in the intensity persist to the highest latitudes, even in the absence of clearly correlated signatures in the solar wind and magnetic field; e) the surface of symmetry of the modulation in 1994-95 was offset about 10° south of the heliographic equator; f) the intensity of electrons and of low energy (< 100 MeV) protons showed essentially no dependence on heliographic latitude.  相似文献

This paper summarizes cosmic ray data on both galactic and anomalous particles in the inner and outer heliosphere near the sunspot minimum in 1995 and 1996 at the end of solar cycle 22. These data come from the IMP spacecraft in the inner heliosphere and the Voyager and Pioneer spacecraft in the outer heliosphere. In the inner heliosphere, the cosmic ray intensities at all energies in 1996 have recovered to almost the same maximum values they had at the last sunspot minimum in 1987 and the intensities are an even closer match to those observed two 11-year cycles earlier in 1976. In the outer heliosphere beyond 40 AU the intensity recovery is very slow and the intensities at all energies and for all species are almost constant in 1995-96 indicating that little further recovery can be expected in this cycle. The intensity of galactic cosmic rays in 1996 is only 0.3-0.5 of that observed at the same radius of 42 AU in 1987 and for anomalous cosmic rays this ratio is only 0.1-0.2. This suggests a dramatically different entry of particles into the heliosphere in the two cycles for both types of particles as well as significantly different particle flow characteristics in the outer heliosphere. The net result of these different characteristics is that near the Earth only a relatively small intensity difference is observed between successive 11-year solar cycles whereas in the outer heliosphere the differences between cycles become very large and may even dominate the overall modulation.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic ions from the Ulysses COSPIN Low Energy Telescope in the mid and high-latitude regions of the heliosphere prior to and during the first polar pass of the Ulysses spacecraft. After the encounter with Jupiter, Ulysses started on its journey out-of-the-ecliptic. Between 13°S and 29°S the spacecraft sampled the solar wind from both the streamer belt and the polar coronal hole. Here, co-rotating magnetic structures with forward and reverse shocks and containing accelerated energetic ions were observed. At latitudes greater than 29°S, Ulysses was completely immersed in the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. Here the co-rotating magnetic structures were weaker, and in general had only reverse shocks, but were still capable of accelerating the energetic ions, albeit with reduced intensity. The most recent results show that beyond 50°S, very few if any, reverse shocks are observed. However, accelerated ions from magnetic interaction regions are still observed. We report also on an intensity enhancement at 50°S due to the passage of a high-latitude CME.  相似文献

Voyagers 1 and 2 are now observing the latitudinal structure of the heliospheric magnetic field in the distant heliosphere (the legion between - 30 AU and the termination shock). Voyager 2 is observing the influence of the interstellar medium on the solar wind. The pressure of the interstellar pickup protons, measured by their contribution to pressure balanced structures, is greater than or equal to the magnetic pressure and much greater than the thermal pressures of the solar wind protons and electrons in the distant heliosphere. The solar wind speed is observed to decrease and the proton temperature increase with increasing distance from the sun. This may result from the production of pickup ions by the charge exchange process with the interstellar neutrals. The introduction of the pickup ions into the dynamics of the magnetized solar wind plasma appears to be an important new process which must be considered in future theoretical studies of the termination shock and boundary with the local interstellar medium.  相似文献

We report the discovery that for latitudes above 40°S, the observed recurring modulation of cosmic rays and anomalous nuclei occurs without the detection byUlysses of the solar wind velocity and magnetic field recurring enhancements that have, heretofore at lower latitudes, defined corotating interaction regions—i.e., the mechanism producing the recurring intensity variations >40°S appears to be located beyond the radial range ofUlysses.  相似文献

The spectra and anisotropies of ions 30 keV have been measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle experiment on Voyagers 1 and 2 in the vicinity of interplanetary shocks between radial distances of 1–55 AU and heliographic latitudes 11° S-32° N. The spectra and anisotropies associated with a recent corotating (CIR) event at low latitude observed at Voyager 2 (36.6 AU, –9°) are similar to those of another event at high latitude observed at Voyager 1 (49.8 AU, 33.5°). An earlier CIR event observed at Voyager 2 (14 AU) associated with the previous solar cycle produced spectra and anisotropies remarkably similar to the more recent events. The anisotropies are used to calculate the solar wind velocity downstream of shocks where possible using the Compton-Getting effect, allowing the determination of previously unknown velocities at the locations of Voyager 1. For the large shock event observed at Voyagers 1 (38 AU, 30°) and 2 (29 AU, 3°) in mid-1989, the postshock spectra and anisotropies are well described by convected power law distributions. The Voyager 1 and 2 postshock spectra 4 days after the shock passage are nearly identical. The preshock anisotropies at low energy are similar, despite differences in the magnetic field orientation and the low energy spectrum. We find that the 30 keV ion anisotropies are generally well described by convective distributions downstream but not in the upstream region for shocks and many other shock events at Voyagers 1 and 2.  相似文献

The intense solar activity centered in March and June 1991 produced some of the largest interplanetary disturbances over the past several solar cycles. For these events the Ulysses EPAC energetic particle observations near 3 AU are compared with those of the Voyager 2 CRS experiment near 35 AU. At Voyager 2 there is a single long-lived event extending over a period of some 6 months while the Ulysses data shows the imprint of individual events as well as the formative stages of the longer lived structure. The average intensity gradient is –17% AU between the 2 spacecraft. At both locations the energy spectra can be represented by an exponential in momentum. The characteristic momentum for protons, (Po)H is on the average 4–5 times larger at 35 AU than at 3 AU and there is a significant change in the (Po)He/(Po)H ratio. However the average H to He ratio is in the range 20–25 for both sets of measurements.  相似文献

A primary goal of the Ulysses mission is to study the 3-dimensional structures making up the interplanetary medium, and example of which is the high speed solar wind stream observedin situ by Ulysses beginning in July 1992. In order to study the longitudinal extent of this stream as a function of Ulysses' increasing heliographic latitude, a second point of reference is required to separate spatial and temporal variations. Such a reference point is provided at Jupiter by a class of Jovian radio bursts, whose occurrence rate varies in a predictable way with solar wind speed. Using thein situ and remote observations from Ulysses, the extent of the high speed stream at 5 AU is mapped and compared to the associated coronal hole boundary on the Sun.  相似文献

Throughout 1993, as the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from 23° to 45° south heliolatitude, the HI-SCALE instrument on the spacecraft measured a recurrent series of enhanced particle fluxes with a recurrence period of 26.5 days. These particles are accelerated from a background seed population by the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated with a southern solar polar coronal hole. Using the Wart detector telescope of the HI-SCALE instrument, we have analyzed the elemental abundances of C, N, O, and Fe relative to He for 0.5–4.0 MeV/nucl ions and Ne, Mg, and Si for 1.0–4.0 MeV/nucl ions in the CIRs. We compare the relative abundances to some previous measurements reported from 1 A.U. as well as with solar photosphere abundances. We note that HI-SCALE measurements of the heliolatitude dependence of the oxygen abundance and spectrum as reported by Lanzerottiet al. (1994) suggest that a substantial fraction of the seed population for the CIR-accelerated oxygen is likely to be the anomalous oxygen component of the cosmic rays.  相似文献

We review aspects of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) that bear on the solar modulation of energetic particles in the heliosphere. We show that the latitudinal and radial gradients of these particles exhibit a 22-year periodicity in concert with the reversal of the Sun's magnetic field. The power-law index of the low energy portion of the energy spectrum of ACRs at the shock in 1996 appears to be -1.3, suggesting that the strength of the solar wind termination shock at the helioequatorial plane is relatively weak, with s 2.8. The rigidity dependence of the perpendicular interplanetary mean free path in the outer heliosphere for particles with rigidities between 0.2 and 0.7 GV varies approximately as R2, where R is particle rigidity. There is evidence that ACR oxygen is primarily multiply charged above 20 MeV/nuc and primarily singly-charged below 16 MeV/nuc. The location of the termination shock was at 65 AU in 1987 and 85 AU in 1994.  相似文献

This paper summarizes new data in several fields of astronomy that relate to the origin and acceleration of cosmic rays in our galaxy and similar nearby galaxies. Data from radio astronomy shows that supernova remnants, both in our galaxy and neighboring galaxies, appear to be the sources of most of the accelerated electrons observed in these galaxies. -ray measurements also reveal several strong sources associated with supernova remnants in our galaxy. These sources have -ray spectra that are suggestive of the acceleration of cosmic-ray nuclei. Cosmic-ray observations from the Voyager and Ulysses spacecraft suggest a source composition that is very similar to the solar composition but with distinctive differences in the 4He, 12C,14 N and 22Ne abundances that are the imprint of giant W-R star nucleosynthesis. Injection effects which depend on the first ionization potential (FIP) of the elements involved are also observed, in a manner similar to the fractionization observed between the solar photosphere and corona and also analogous to the preferential acceleration observed for high FIP elements at the heliospheric solar wind termination shock. Most of the 59Ni produced in the nucleosynthesis of Fe peak nuclei just prior to a SN explosion appears to have decayed to 59Co before the cosmic rays have been accelerated, suggesting that the59 Ni is accelerated at least 105 yr after it is produced. The decay of certain K capture isotopes produced during cosmic-ray propagation has also been observed for the first time. These measurements suggest that re-acceleration after an initial principal acceleration cannot be large. The high energy spectral indices of cosmic-ray nuclei show a significant charge dependent trend with the index of hydrogen being -2.76 and that of Fe -2.61. The escape length dependence of cosmic rays from our galaxy can now be measured up to ~300 GeV nucl-1 using the Fe sec/Fe ratio. This escape length is P -0.05 above 10 GeV nucl-1 leading to a typical source spectral index of (2.70±0.10) -0.50 = -2.20 for nuclei. This is similar to the source index of -2.3 inferred for electrons within the errors of ±0.1 in the index for both components. Spacecraft measurements in the outer heliosphere suggest that the local cosmic-ray energy density is ~2eV cm-3 – larger than previously assumed. Gamma-ray measurements of electron bremsstrahlung below 50 MeV from the Comptel experiment on CGRO show that fully 20–30% of this energy is in electrons, several times that previously assumed. New estimates of the amount of matter traversed by cosmic rays using measurements of the B/C ratio are also higher than earlier estimates – this value is now ~10 g cm-2 at 1 GeV nucl-1. Thus altogether cosmic rays are energetically a more important component of our galaxy than previously assumed. This has implications both for the types of sources that are capable of accelerating cosmic rays and also for the role that cosmic rays may play in ionizing the diffuse interstellar medium.  相似文献

There is a warm tenuous partially ionized cloud (T104 K,n(HI)0.1 cm–3,n(Hii 0.22–0.44 cm–3) surrounding the solar system which regulates the environment of the solar system, determines the structure of the heliopause region, and feeds neutral interstellar gas into the inner solar system. The velocity (V–20 km s–1 froml335°,b0° in the local standard of rest) and enhanced Caii and Feii abundances of this cloud suggest an origin as evaporated gas from cloud surfaces in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association. Although the soft X-ray emission attributed to the Local Bubble is enigmatic, optical and ultraviolet data are consistent with bubble formation caused by star formation epochs in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association as regulated by the nearby spiral arm configuration. The cloud surrounding the solar system (the local fluff) appears to be the leading region of an expanding interstellar structure (the squall line) which contains a magnetic field causing polarization of the light of nearby stars, and also absorption features in nearby upwind stars. The velocity vectors of the solar system and local fluff are perpendicular in the local standard of rest. Combining this information with the low column densities seen towards Sirius in the anti-apex direction, and the assumption that the cloud velocity vector is parallel to the surface normal, suggests that the Sun entered the local fluff within the historical past (less than 10 000 years ago) and is skimming the surface of the cloud. Comparison of magnesium absorption lines towards Sirius and anomalous cosmic-ray data suggest the local fluff is in ionization equilibrium.Reason has moons, but moons not hers, Lie mirror'd on her sea, Confounding her astronomers, But, O! delighting me.Ralph Hodgson  相似文献

Solar wind charge states measured by ULYSSES/SWICS in the south polar hole   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Ulysses mission now has an extensive data base covering several passes of the south polar coronal hole as the spacecraft proceeds to higher latitudes. Using composition measurements from the SWICS experiment on the Ulysses spacecraft, we have obtained charge state distributions, and hence inferred coronal ionization temperatures, for several solar wind species. In particular, we present an overview of Oxygen ionization temperature measurements, based on the O7+/O6+ ratio, for the period January 1993 until April 1994 (23°S to 61°S heliographic latitude), and detailed Oxygen, Silicon and Iron charge state distributions of the south polar hole during a two month period of nearly continuous hole coverage, Dec 1993–Jan 1994 (45°S to 52°S heliographic latitude).  相似文献

The cosmic ray isotopic composition measurements from the High Energy Telescope (HET) on the Ulysses spacecraft are reviewed. The source isotopic composition of key elements is found to be surprisingly like the Solar system abundances with the notable exception of 22Ne. The average density of interstellar material cosmic rays traverse is found to be 0.25 atom cm–3, corresponding to a confinement time of 20 Myr. Vanadium isotopic abundances are shown to be consistent with weak cosmic-ray reacceleration. The implications of these measurements are discussed.  相似文献

Methods and results of investigations of the interstellar gas inside the heliosphere are summarized and discussed. Flow parameters of H and He and the relative abundances of H, He, N, O, and Ne in the distant heliosphere are given. Charge exchange processes in front of the heliosphere affect the flow of hydrogen and oxygen through the heliopause. The speed of hydrogen is reduced by 6 km/s, and screening leads to a reduction of the O/He and H/He ratios in the neutral gas entering the heliosphere. When the screening effect and the acceleration processes leading to the anomalous cosmic rays (ACR) are sufficiently understood, abundances in the LIC can be derived from measurements inside the heliosphere. Since isotopic ratios are virtually not changed by screening or by EUV and solar wind ionisation, relative abundances of isotopes in the gaseous phase of the LIC can be determined with no or minor correction from investigations of the neutral gas, pickup ions and ACR particles.  相似文献

Cosmic-ray isotope observations from NASAs Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) mission have been used to investigate the composition of cosmic-ray source material. Source abundances relative to 56Fe are reported for eleven isotopes of Ca, Fe, Co, and Ni, including the very rare isotopes 48Ca and 64Ni. Although the source abundances range over a factor 104, most of the ratios to 56Fe are consistent with solar-system values to within 20%. However, there are some notable differences, the most significant being an excess of (70±30)% relative to the solar system for the cosmic-ray source ratio 58Fe/56Fe. The possible association of such an excess with a contribution to the cosmic-ray source from Wolf–Rayet star ejecta is discussed.  相似文献

The local interstellar medium can be probed in different ways: by analyzing low energy X-ray data in the range 0.1–0.4 keV, where the radiation is absorbed by the interstellar gas at column densities in excess of about 1020 cm-2 — and can therefore be regarded as local, by determining the absorption of stellar emission spectra from nearby stars along their lines of sight by intervening gas and by directin situ measurements of those components which penetrate the heliosphere sufficiently far, provided they can be distinguished from interplanetary material. The current status of these different investigations gives the following picture: the solar system is surrounded by a bubble of hot gas (density 0.005cm-3, temperature 106 K) out to several tens of parsecs. More locally it is embedded in a small warm cloud of density 0.07cm-3, temperature 7000 K, column density 5 × 1017 cm-2 — which gives a mass of about 0.1M . The transition to the heliosphere is governed by solar UV ionization, snowploughing of the interstellar gas by the outwardly expanding solar wind and the bow shock. The heliosphere is the region inside the solar wind terminal shock. Classically it would be regarded as not yet affected by (or aware of) the obstacle ahead. Practically, the existence of the interstellar medium makes itself felt even far inside the heliosphere by the penetration of neutral gas, dust, plasma waves, shock accelerated particles and cosmic rays. These are the local probes of the interstellar medium.  相似文献

The combination of Voyager 1 (77.9 AU, 34.4° N) and Voyager 2 (61.2 AU, 24.5° S) at moderate heliolatitudes in the distant heliosphere and Ulysses with its unique latitudinal surveys in the inner heliosphere along with IMP 8 and other satellites at 1 AU constitutes a network of observatories that are ideally suited to study cosmic rays over the solar minimum of cycle 22 and the onset of solar activity and the long term cosmic ray modulation of cycle 23. Through 2000.7 there have been three well-defined step decreases in the cosmic ray intensity at 1 AU with the cumulative effect being in good agreement with the net decrease in cycle 21 at a comparable time in the solar cycle. Over this period the intensity changes at Ulysses are similar to those at 1 AU. In the distant heliosphere the initial decreases appear to be smaller than those at 1 AU. However the full effects of the interplanetary disturbances producing the most recent and largest step decrease in the inner heliosphere have not yet reached V-2. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The rates of the most important ionization processes acting in interplanetary space on interstellar H, He, C, O, Ne and Ar atoms are critically reviewed in the paper. Their long-term modulations in the period 1974 – 1994 are reexamined using updated information on relevant cross-sections as well as direct or indirect data on variations of the solar wind/solar EUV fluxes based on IMP 8 measurements and monitoring of the solar 10.7 cm radio emission. It is shown that solar cycle related variations are pronounced (factor of 3 between maximum and minimum) especially for species such as He, Ne, C for which photoionization is the dominant loss process. Species sensitive primarily to the charge-exchange (as H) show only moderate fluctuations 20% around average. It is also demonstrated that new techniques that make use of simultaneous observations of neutral He atoms on direct and indirect orbits, or simultaneous measurements of He+ and He++ pickup ions and solar wind particles can be useful tools for narrowing the uncertainties of the He photoionization rate caused by insufficient knowledge of the solar EUV flux and its variations.  相似文献
