The galaxy cluster 3C 129 contains two radio galaxies, the prototypical head tail radio galaxy 3C 129 and the weaker radio galaxy 3C 129.1. The tail of the first radio galaxy extends over more than 15′ across the sky. In this paper, we report on Chandra spectroscopy observations of the galaxy cluster, complemented by new and archival radio data taken with the Very Large Array (VLA) at 0.33, 1.4, 5, and 8 GHz and by HI-observations performed with the dominion radio astrophysical observatory (DRAO). We describe the Chandra results on the properties of the Intra-Cluster Medium (ICM) and discuss extended X-ray emission detected from the host galaxy of the radio galaxy 3C 129.1 and from the inner jet of the radio galaxy 3C 129. Finally, we report on the results of an ICM/radio plasma pressure balance study along the tail of the radio galaxy 3C 129.  相似文献

How are accretion disks in Seyfert Galaxies oriented relative to the disk of the spiral galaxy which hosts them? This angle, β, serves as a link between the innermost workings of the black hole plus fueling accretion disk and the larger galaxy, either as the memory of the activity-provoking event, or as a diagnostic for the structure of the accretion disk.A sample culled from the literature shows that there is no tendency for accretion disks to align with the host galaxy disk and, in addition, there appears to be a zone of avoidance, where the accretion disks of no or very few active spirals are aligned within 20 degrees of the normal to the host galaxy disk. These results seem counter intuitive given the strong influence of angular momentum of the galaxy disk on material in that disk.  相似文献

We present results from the analysis of an XMM-Newton observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 7469, the first high resolution X-ray spectrum of this source. The Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) spectrum has several narrow absorption and emission lines of O, N, C and Ne, originating from gas at a range of ionisation parameters, from log ξ1.6 to log ξ−2 (where ξ has the units erg cm s−1). We demonstrate that the ionisation state of the warm emitter is consistent with that of the high-ionisation phase of the warm absorber, and compare the warm absorber in this object with those in other sources.  相似文献

The connection between normal and active galaxies is reviewed, by summarizing our progress on answering nine key questions. (1) Do all galaxies contain massive dark objects (MDOs)? (2) Are these MDOs actually supermassive black holes? (3) Why are the dark objects so dark? (4) Do all galaxies contain an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN)? (5) Are the “dwarf AGN” really AGN? (6) Does AGN activity correlate with host galaxy properties? (7) How are AGN fuelled? (8) Is AGN activity related to starburst activity? (9) How do quasars relate to galaxy formation?  相似文献

We report on the results of Chandra observations of the galaxy cluster AWM7. The ACIS image reveals new substructures with a spatial extent of more than 8″ (4 kpc at AWM7) near the cD galaxy center, represented by a hard sub-peak and a soft peak. These substructures suggest that a dynamical process related to the formation of the cD galaxy is now taking place. Inside the cluster core within a radius of 2′, annular spectra with every 10″ step are fitted well by single temperature models. The temperature gradually drops from 4.2 keV at a radius of 60 kpc (2′) to 1.8 keV at the cluster center. The radial abundance profile shows a gradient with a peak metallicity of 1.5 solar at a radius of about 15″ (7 kpc). A two-dimensional map shows two high metallicity blob-like regions, which may be the gas expelled from the cD galaxy.  相似文献

First results of pointed and All Sky Survey observations of galaxies with the X-ray observatory satellite ROSAT are reported. During observations of the Magellanic Clouds and the Andromeda galaxy new super-soft X-ray sources have been detected. This new class of luminous X-ray sources may help to solve the millisecond pulsar progenitor problem. Due to the improved sensitivity and longer observation times of ROSAT new X-ray point sources have been resolved in several nearby galaxies. The diffuse emission of the LMC that was already reported by EINSTEIN has been mapped in detail. It shows a lot of fine structure and temperatures around 5 × 106 K. The improved low energy response of ROSAT led to the discovery of 106 K gas from the spiral galaxy M101 and the halo of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. No diffuse emission was detected from the halo of the edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5907.  相似文献

The X-ray background intensity around galaxies and rich clusters of galaxies is investigated in three energy bands using the ROSAT All-Sky Survey maps. It is found that an amplitude of the XRB enhancements surrounding the Abell clusters and high density areas in the Lick galaxy counts depends on photon energy. Excess flux generated in the surrounding of the galaxy concentrations is consistent with the thermal emission by hot gas postulated by hydrodynamic simulations.  相似文献

The entropy in the hot X-ray gas in groups of galaxies is a fossil of the process of galaxy formation The amount of entropy in these low mass systems considerably exceeds that predicted from structure formation models. To explain these results requires “extra” energy which is a relic of the process of star formation and active galaxy heating. We present new XMM results on the entropy and entropy profiles. These results are inconsistent with pre-heating scenarios which have been developed to explain the entropy floor in groups but are broadly consistent with models of structure formation which include the effects of heating and/or the cooling of the gas. The total entropy in these systems provides a strong constraint on all models of galaxy and group formation, and on the poorly defined feedback process which controls the transformation of gas into stars and thus the formation of structure in the universe.  相似文献

We explore the hydrodynamical evolution of dusty gas around active galactic nuclei (AGN) driven by the radiation from circumnuclear starbursts. For this purpose, we calculate the temporal equilibrium states between the radiation force by starburst regions and the gravity in galactic nuclei. As a result, we find that the equilibrium patterns between the radiation force and the gravity are roughly characterized by three types. The first is the situation where the starburst luminosity is larger than the Eddington luminosity. In this case, the dusty gas is blown out like a wind. We may detect intense infrared (IR) radiation from the starburst regions screened by blown-out dusty gas. The second is the situation when the radiation force is comparable to the gravity. In this case, the equilibrium surface surrounds the nuclear regions as well as starburst regions. Since the dusty gas absorbs UV or soft X-rays from the center and re-emits IR radiation, we may recognize it as a Seyfert 2 galaxy. The last is the situation where the starburst luminosity is small. In this case, the dusty wall of equilibrium would be built up only in the vicinity of starburst regions. The radiation from central regions is rarely obscured, because the dusty regions have only small angular extension. So, it would look like a Seyfert 1 galaxy which is characterized by intense soft X-rays. When we consider the stellar evolution in starburst regions, the starburst luminosity decreases with time. Therefore, we can recognize the above three types as time evolution; a starburst galaxy (first stage), a Seyfert 2 galaxy (second stage), and a Seyfert 1 galaxy (third stage). Note that we present here an alternative scenario for explaining the relation between Sy 1's and Sy 2's to the standard “Unified Scheme”.  相似文献

We present a multi-wavelength study of the merging history and its influence on galaxy activities of a newly detected merger candidate – Abell S0721. This cluster was only known as a poor cluster in the Shapley Supercluster, but when several survey data of different wavelengths are combined, evidence of strong merging is revealed. We have analyzed the optical and X-ray structures of the cluster, as well as galaxy dynamics and properties of the radio galaxies in the cluster. The dynamics analysis shows the velocity distribution of this system is significantly deviated from a 1-Gaussian model, indicating the existence of 2–3 dynamically different sub-systems; in addition, both optical and X-ray structures of the cluster show an elongated and multi-clump structure, two X-ray clumps imaged by ROSAT All Sky Survey are well correlated with two galaxy density peaks. This cluster is possibly a merger of several groups; our analysis shows that the projection angle for two clumps in the main structure is possibly near the projection plane, and the substructure is seen at ∼30–75° from the projection plane. The merging process could also be the origin to boost the activities of its member galaxies. Finally, as compared with other merger candidates in the Shapley Supercluster, the radio galaxies identified in Abell S0721 are all optically luminous, and the fraction of luminous radio galaxies is only lower than one merger candidate (which is proposed to be at the very beginning of a merger event), this suggests Abell S0721 is also at the beginning of a merger event.  相似文献

The collapse of a protogalaxy composed of dark matter and primordial gas has been investigated by numerical simulations and analytical multi-zone modelling in an attempt to examine the early evolution of disk galaxies. The importance of ample interstellar matter existing in young galactic disks has been highlighted. Confrontation of the theoretical results with the available observational data has led to a new picture for disk galaxy evolution, in which the bulge is the secondary object formed from disk matter. Occurrence of quasar activity is also discussed in relation to the dynamical evolution of the host galaxy.  相似文献

Application of the cosmic virial theorem to galaxy redshift surveys suggests an open universe - if the dark material is distributed in the same way as galaxies. Here we investigate four redshift surveys. We present new results on the amplitudes of the two- and three-point galaxy correlation functions and we estimate the relative peculiar velocities in the deep redshift survey of Kirshner and co-workers (1983). Next, we review evidence which suggests that dark material is clustered on scales comparable to the optical radii of galaxies. In particular, we use spectroscopic and photometric observations to set constraints on the mass distribution in elliptical galaxies.  相似文献

With the aim of investigating galaxy evolution in nearby galaxy groups, we analyzed the spectral energy distribution of 24 galaxies, members of two groups in the Leo cloud, USGC U268 and USGC U376. We estimated the ages and stellar masses of the galaxies by fitting their total apparent magnitudes from far-ultraviolet to near-infrared with population synthesis models. The comparison of the results for a subsample of galaxies with smooth particle hydrodynamic (SPH) simulations with chemo-photometric implementation, shows that in most cases the estimated stellar masses obtained with the two different approaches are in good agreement. The kinematical and dynamical analysis indicates that USGC U268 is in a pre-virial collapse phase while USGC U376 is likely in a more evolved phase towards virialization.  相似文献

The distribution and the dynamics of the cold gas in the circumnuclear regions (r ≲ [1 − a few] kpc) of disk galaxies have been observed at high resolutions of a few arcsec in λ2.6 mm CO (J=1→0) line emission. Distinct CO features are commonly found in the observed disk galaxies and they are different from galaxy to galaxy. They are explained by means of orbit-resonance theories and dynamical evolution. The evolutionary sequence in time is constructed based on the studies of dynamics in theoretical works and numerical simulations in the literature. Not only the behavior of the cold gas but also the starburst, outbreaks of the active galactic nucleus, and the evolution of global structures in disk galaxies are discussed in the bar-driven evolution scenario.  相似文献

To study the distribution of galaxies in the Universe data on their positions magnitudes and redshifts are needed. A review of all large samples of galaxy counts, galaxy catalogues and redshift surveys as well as catalogues and redshifts of clusters is given. It is shown that the sky has been unevenly studied, the strongest asimmetry being between the Northern and Southern hemispheres. Particular attention is paid to the Zwicky near clusters. It is shown that only 14% have a well determined redshift and at least 28% are not single clusters but superposition of two or more groups. From an analysis of the available literature it appears that 1) there is more data about redshifts and positions of galaxies than are normally used. 2) The available data are far from uniform and complete. It is argued that a lot more new observations are needed before one can confidently draw conclusions about the structure of the Universe.  相似文献

We report on some of the most recent results from a multiwavelength study of a volume-limited sample of galaxies. This paper will concentrate on the detection of variability in NGC 4395, the least luminous known Seyfert galaxy, and the high resolution X-ray imaging of the sample.  相似文献

The Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO) is an approved NASA mission, programmed for launch in 1988. Its complement of four detectors has established goals: 1) to study the nature of compact γ-ray sources such as neutron stars and black holes, or objects whose nature is yet to be understood; 2) to search for evidence of nucleosynthesis especially in the regions of supernovae; 3) to study structural features and dynamical properties of our galaxy; 4) to explore other galaxies, especially the extraordinary types such as radio, Seyferts, and quasars; and 5) to study cosmological effects by examining the diffuse radiation in detail. This paper discusses the design, objectives, and expected scientific results of each of the GRO instruments in view of the GRO mission goals.  相似文献
