The use of interplanetary scintillations for probing otherwise inaccessible regions of the solar wind is reviewed. A comparison with space-craft observations in the ecliptic is used as a calibration for the scintillation observations. Recent observations at high latitudes and near the Sun are discussed from this viewpoint. A new analysis which uses both scintillation and angular scattering observations to estimate the electron density spectrum is introduced. The spectrum appears to have a high frequency cutoff which varies slowly with solar distances and may also have a relatively flat region just below the cutoff frequency.  相似文献

We study the simultaneous occurrence of ULF waves observed on board GEOS and at two of its conjugated stations: Husafell (Iceland) and Skibotn (Norway). We try to deduce some properties of the regions in which these waves are generated. The few number of simultaneous observations of pearl events indicates that such structured oscillations can occur only in specific conditions which are not met generally at the geostationary altitude. We introduce a new method for measuring time delays between the satellite and the ground. We show that this time is much higher than it would be expected from a simple extrapolation of measurements done at lower latitudes on structured events.  相似文献

Methods are discussed for establishing the optical identification of X ray sources in the medium and deep X-ray surveys of the Einstein Observatory. Of the 63 X-ray sources with a statistical significance of 5 in the medium survey (Maccacaro et al. 1981), optical identification work is summarized for 51, of which identifications have been made with 30 active galactic nuclei. The optical properties of some of these X-ray selected objects are briefly discussed.The Einstein deep survey of Pavo (Griffiths et al. 1981) is used to illustrate the problems and methods used for securing optical identifications for X-ray sources in the deep survey fields. Identifications have been made with 4 QSOs at the bright end of the optical candidate distribution (together with 3 G stars) and it is shown that a further 7 fainter objects are also likely to be QSOs.  相似文献

The feasibility of observation of EUV sources is assessed. Many stars have been detected in the EUV range ( 100–1000); line fluxes from others can be predicted. Selected astrophysical problems are reviewed that can benefit from EUV spectroscopy. The penetration of fast electrons ( 5 keV) into an artificial magnetosphere and their precipitation on the terrella surface is investigated. These fast electrons act as radioactive tracers allowing the experimental determination of the global picture of plasma flow around the magnetosphere and its intrusion into the latter. Two different zones of precipitation are observed, distinctly separated on the day-side and merging into each other on the night-side. The high latitude penetration region on the day-side is not localized around the neutral points, but is stretched in longitude forming polar cusps toward dusk and dawn. The lower latitude precipitation zone, embracing the whole terrella is due to the particle precipitation from a radiation belt formed in this experiment. The source of these belt particles seems to be located in the plasmasheet on the night side. Besides the polar cusps, a plasma intrusion from the sides of the magnetosphere in the equatorial region is observed. This equatorial gap, originating on the day-side, is gradually transformed into the plasmasheet in the magnetospheric tail. On the basis of these experimental data a model of the magnetosphere is discussed.  相似文献

There is a warm tenuous partially ionized cloud (T104 K,n(HI)0.1 cm–3,n(Hii 0.22–0.44 cm–3) surrounding the solar system which regulates the environment of the solar system, determines the structure of the heliopause region, and feeds neutral interstellar gas into the inner solar system. The velocity (V–20 km s–1 froml335°,b0° in the local standard of rest) and enhanced Caii and Feii abundances of this cloud suggest an origin as evaporated gas from cloud surfaces in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association. Although the soft X-ray emission attributed to the Local Bubble is enigmatic, optical and ultraviolet data are consistent with bubble formation caused by star formation epochs in the Scorpius-Centaurus Association as regulated by the nearby spiral arm configuration. The cloud surrounding the solar system (the local fluff) appears to be the leading region of an expanding interstellar structure (the squall line) which contains a magnetic field causing polarization of the light of nearby stars, and also absorption features in nearby upwind stars. The velocity vectors of the solar system and local fluff are perpendicular in the local standard of rest. Combining this information with the low column densities seen towards Sirius in the anti-apex direction, and the assumption that the cloud velocity vector is parallel to the surface normal, suggests that the Sun entered the local fluff within the historical past (less than 10 000 years ago) and is skimming the surface of the cloud. Comparison of magnesium absorption lines towards Sirius and anomalous cosmic-ray data suggest the local fluff is in ionization equilibrium.Reason has moons, but moons not hers, Lie mirror'd on her sea, Confounding her astronomers, But, O! delighting me.Ralph Hodgson  相似文献

Much verified information has been accumulated in recent years which shows that many fundamental concepts involving classical physics, thermodynamics, astrophysics and the general theory of relativity are strongly coupled together. This evidence is employed in this paper to explain the principles of the astrophysical school of thermodynamics; a growing revolutionary school which deduces thermodynamics, energy dissipation, and time unisotropies from the Newtonian and Einsteinian theories of gravitation and from the dynamics of radiation in unsaturable (intercluster) space. Accordingly the density of radiation and the dynamics of (unsaturable) outer space affect all processes in the galactic media, in the solar system, in the magnetosphere and on Earth.The origin of all observed irreversibilities in nature — of time, of all time anisotropics, of energy dissipation, of T-violations in elementary particles, of retarded potentials in electrodynamics, of the biological clocks, and of biological arrows of time — is one; it is the radiation unsaturability of space. But since this unsaturability and gravitation are interconnected we explain the origin of asymmetries, structure, and thermodynamics within the frameworks of the Newtonian and Einsteinian theories of gravitation.The theory presented here forms a part of a more general approach called gravitism, which unifies some other disciplinary studies in the natural sciences with a unified approach to gravitation and the theory of time. Climate is discussed as an integral part of System Earth, determined by a complex interplay of numerous geological, biological and solar processes. The historical and geological record of changing climate and atmospheric CO2 pressure does not support the current popular vision that this greenhouse gas is the dominant climate controlling agent. When empirically ante post tested against past global climate changes, the forecasts of the climate models mainly based on forcing by atmospheric CO2 are not borne out. On the other hand, recent studies show that solar variability rather than changing CO2 pressure is an important, probably the dominant climate forcing factor.  相似文献

The telescope Gamma-1 is designed to investigate cosmic gamma rays in the energy range from 50 MeV to 5000 MeV. The geometrical sensitive area of the telescope amounts to 1500 cm2, the angular resolution in each direction is equal to 1.2° at the energy 300 MeV and is about 20 when including a coded mask in the telescope, the energy resolution changes from 70% at 100 MeV to 35% at 550 MeV. The characteristics of the telescope and its systems have been determined by the Monte-Carlo method as well as by accelerator calibrations. Discrete sources at the intensity level of 10–7 quanta cm–2 s–1 may be recorded in a year of observations with the gamma-ray telescope Gamma-1 with a source location accuracy of 10 arc min.  相似文献

Experimental investigations of plasma waves at the magnetopause, including recent results from the AMPTE/IRM satellite, show that both E and B fluctuations typically have a featureless spectrum which monotonically decreases with frequency; integrated rms amplitudes are typically a few mV m-1 for E and 10 nT for B, though in particular E can be as much as an order of magnitude larger in exceptional cases. Surveys show a lack of correlation between wave parameters and the magnetopause parameters. Under the assumption that crossing the diffusion region would give a pronounced signature in the waves, the survey data allow an upper limit to be placed on the latitudinal extent of the diffusion region, which is about 1000 km — implying that it is not surprising that the wave data surveys have so far failed to detect it. The observed wave turbulence levels have been used to estimate diffusion coefficients under different assumptions for the wave mode, but the resulting diffusion coefficient is always too small to explain either reconnection or boundary layer formation. Recent work of Galeev et al. (1986) indicates that the dominant diffusion process may be magnetic field migration, which is a macroscopic process involving the interaction of tearing mode islands. Assuming this mode to be present at the observed level of B, a particle diffusion coefficient of nearly 109 m2 s-1 is obtained. Another macroscopic diffusive process which could occur at the magnetopause is stochastic E × B scattering, which also implies a diffusion coefficient the order of 109 m2 s-1 if the observed E spectrum is assumed to be a turbulent cascade consisting of convective cells.  相似文献

The Mighei meteorite is generally considered to be unique amongst the group of stony meteorites known as the carbonaceous chondrites in a number of scientifically interesting aspects. The meteorite, which is related to the type II carbonaceous chondrites of Wiik's classification (or type C2 according to van Schmus and Wood), contains extraterrestrial organic compounds (general C content = 2.6%), and extraterrestrial water associated with iron-magnesium silicate crystals (general H2O content=12%).The meteorite fall occurred in 1889, over a region in the Ukraine. In structure it was found to be a chondritic meteorite, having chondrules of order 0.5 mm in size. The composition of the meteorite is inhomogeneous. In mineralogical terms the meteorite is composed of two paragenetic associations, described as high and low temperature, which are generally distributed in equal proportions. The low temperature associations are a characteristic only of carbonaceous chondrites: the minerals involved are chlorites or the serpentine group, carbonates, free sulphur, sulphates and low temperature glass. In chemical terms the Mighei meteorite is somewhat enriched in the volatile elements S, C, H, N, O in comparison to the usual chondrites. These elements are found in different forms and the isotopic composition of the elements S, C, O, is different for different phases. The meteorite is also rich in a number of other fairly volatile element admixtures such as: B, F, Cl, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ge, Br, In, Te, I, Hg, Tl, Pb, Bi, and contains somewhat enhanced initial quantities of rare gases.The organic compounds are of an abiological nature in the meteorite and are located in finely dispersed distributions between the chondrules. They are present in the main, as polymerized organic compounds. Among these polymers there are gaseous hydrocarbons (saturated and non-saturated) and extractable organic compounds. In the latter condition the following organic compounds have been identified: aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, amino acids and others. The meteorite contains free organic radicals (1017 centres g–1), uncoupled -electrons which are delocalized in the aromatic structure of the polymeric matter.The radiogenic age of the meteorite has been determined as from 2.4 to 3.2 × 109 yr (by the K-Ar method) and up to 4.54 × 109 yr (by the Rb-Sr method), while the radiation age is put at 0.5 to 2.4 × 106 yr. Details of the meteorite structure give evidence of at least two processes in its formation; the accretion of the meteoritic matter, together with the simultaneous formation of organic compounds could have taken place at temperatures between 450 and 300 K.Reported on the XIV Meteoritic Conference, December 17, 1970, Moscow.  相似文献

We present the observation of three flare generated shock waves which were measured by Helios-2 at a radial distance from the Sun of 0.476 AU, 0.444 AU, and 0.297 AU. These results show that two of the shocks fulfill the classification scheme of F-events stated in the past while the third shock profile is that of a R-event being interpreted as a driven wave. Because of the close distance to the Sun a flare-association was possible. Only in one case there is some evidence for a piston in the downstream region of the shock. This review surveys the observations of the ionospheric magnetic fields of Venus as observed on the Pioneer Venus Orbiter and the models that have been developed to describe them over the last decade. The models for the large-scale ionospheric field have developed to the advanced stage of one-dimensional, self-consistent, multi-fluid MHD models which provide a detailed picture of the field in the subsolar region for specific upper boundary conditions. In contrast, the models for the small-scale fields and the nightside fields have only reached a rudimentary stage. Much challenging work remains to be done on the origin of the ionospheric flux ropes and nightside ionospheric hole fields. On the whole, the subject of the ionospheric fields would greatly benefit from 3-dimensional global MHD models with self-consistent treatments of the ionosphere.  相似文献
